Can We Still Get Blake Griffin?

May 22, 2009 2009 Draft, 2009 Offseason, Rumors

There is a chance. It is a small chance (I would say it is worse than our chances of getting the top pick three days ago), but there is a chance.
Don’t give me that look. I am not completly crazy. Check out this report from HoopsHype via The Sacramento Bee:
“One league source on Wednesday even indicated the seemingly unthinkable, that the Clippers would be willing to trade the top pick – which they have already confirmed would be Griffin – for the right package.”
The right package. That is an interesting phrase. Is it expiring contracts? Is it picks? Is it a proven youngish player?
Who knows really, it is interesting to note that the Nets have three first round picks in the next two drafts. What if we approach the Clippers, tell them we are willing to take Zach Randolph’s contract off their hands, give them an expiring contract in return (Bobby Simmons), and then give them all three of our first round picks. Would the Clippers accept? I mean, they are the Clippers, so who knows.
Let’s say the Clippers accept this offer? Is Blake Griffin worth mortgaging our future? I say yes. The Nets are a Blake Griffin away from making the playoffs, and if we make the playoffs our pick next year wouldn’t even be that high anyway. So I say Rod Thorn needs to call up the Clippers and offer them this deal. Who knows, they might accept.

Clippers might be dumb, but I think they wouldn’t give up the first pick for anything less than anything including Devin or Brook

Thanks for the comment Mark. I know that, I was just speculating what the right package would be…

If we could get the first pick with something involving Vince, I’d be up for it. But if we do something involving Randolph, we fall into the same conundrum as the clippers now, what do we do with Randolph? I love Vince but if we can get Griffin for him, all loyalties are off. The only person we can show loyalty to is Brook at this point. Betcha Donald Sterling would agree to a trade involving Randolph and the first pick for VC and a couple cheerleaders and secretaries haha

Haha that could be the “right package”. If we get Randolph all we gotta do is stick his butt on the bench. We don’t need to show any loyalty to him or worry about hurting his feelings. Let him rack up the DNPs, and maybe he will ask for a buy-out.

But, weren’t the Clippers wanting to get rid of capspace instead of adding it? And plus, they have a future allstar in Eric Gordon and a rising star in Al Thornton, so I don’t see how this even works out. This can only work if we are getting Gordon in return, or Carter comes off the bench, and both scenarios are unlikely.

Kwame thanks for the comment. I know it is very unlikely that we would get Blake Griffin. I guess that I am just thinking outloud about what would be the “right package”

I really like the idea of Brandon Bass, the Nets definitely need a “bull” inside. How about Yi again deciding to go play for China? He needs his rest.

Thanks for the comment Cliffy. I first wanted to state I love your Nets blog, always a good read. I really hope the Nets take a serious look at Bass, he could flourish in NJ, and I think we can get him cheaply. Now when talking about Yi, part of me thinks it isn’t Yi’s decision to make. China isn’t like the US where they ask you if you want to play. They pretty much force you. I mean look at Yao, he is always dealing with foot problems, yet he too ends up playing for China at the expense of his team (last year’s Olympics is a good example).

I was really pondering on this for a long time, but how would you outline the Nets’ offseason? I think that if they draft Earl Clark of Louisville to fill the hole at the SF spot, and hind a moose that Rod Thorn is looking for, as well as a backup center and point guard, we’ll be good. I was thinking like a Boozer/Bass, maybe Acie Law, and a Kurt Thomas type player will suffice?

[...] players that may be there for the Nets (for example you won’t be seeing Blake Griffin here – though maybe we can still get him). The order is put in is based on how much I want them. This will be updated from time to time [...]
