What It Will Take To Land Carlos Boozer?

Carlos Boozer was a big name thrown around by Nets fans towards the beginning of free-agency.  Many people were talking about acquiring Boozer through a sign and trade or through free-agency, but then Boozer picked up his player option, and then Rod Thorn said we were going to sit back and wait, and then all the talk quieted down.

It seems like the talk is starting up again though.  Tim Buckley of the Dessert News mentioned New Jersey as a potential trade partner for the Jazz:

Chicago, Miami, New York, Detroit and now New Jersey have been most prominently mentioned as possible destinations for Boozer ever since he decided late last month to opt in for the final season and last $12.65 million on his current six-year, $68-million contract with the Jazz.

In my opinion, there is no way we are going to fleece the front office of the Jazz.  Here is what we are going to have to give up in a deal for Boozer:

An Expiring Contract:

If the Jazz are going to give up an expiring contract in Boozer, they should expect one or more in return.  The Jazz have some decisions to make in upcoming years about who to re-sign (Okur and Ronnie Price are free agents next year and Kirilenko’s is up in 2), and they need the expiring contracts to be able to do this.

Draft Picks:

The Jazz have a history of making strong draft picks (Paul Millsap and Deron Williams come to mind), so if they are going to unload Carlos Boozer, they should expect to get some draft picks in return.

A Young Player:

Expiring contracts and draft picks won’t be enough to land Carlos Boozer, they are probably going to require a young player in a deal as well.  Preferably someone at a position they aren’t that deep in, as well as one that can help them in the future.  Chris Douglas-Roberts is the player that pops into my mind.

I have no problem in giving up the draft picks and the expiring contracts (mainly because we are getting a expiring back in return, and it won’t hurt our future), and if we can get a deal done with just these two aspects I will be jumping for joy.  It just isn’t going to happen though.  Utah is a solid, smart, and well-run franchise, and they won’t be fleeced.  In my opinion, the only way this deal gets done is if we add CDR.  I don’t want to see that happen.  I think CDR is going to be a special player, and I don’t want to see him get dealt for a rental player (Let’s face it, he probably won’t be willing to re-sign with the Nets in one year, especially if we are saving our money for two of the big three).

I am not the biggest Boozer fan (he is injured too much and he isn’t a good locker room guy – not good with a bunch of young players) and I don’t want to see this trade made, but if it does happen, I guess it could work out well for the Nets (I know I am contradicting myself now).  If Boozer stays heathly and has a solid year, the Nets may decide to re-sign him.  If we do, NJ (or Brooklyn) would be more attractive to one of the big three.  That being said, the price tag (if this is in fact the price tag) is still a little too high in my mind.

Let Boozer go where he wants to go....Miami is a perfect place for this guy.....another unreliable PF New Jersey rented at a very high price comes to mind.

Offer Big Baby a contract and move on.

For lack of time to contribute in any real way, I'm gonna dumb down the comments for a moment:

DEAR GOD NO!

We should not do this if CDR is in the deal. I know he's still unproven but he has shown us Net fans glimpses of his ability to be a special player.

I really love the kid's aggressiveness. He stated himself that he's going to drive it to the basket before he takes the outside jumper. He's going to be aggressive. He's been working hard all summer on his game and throughout the season he worked hard studying the games of guys like Joe Johnson and Kevin Martin.

He started off last season really shaky. He didn't know the NBA game. Almost every time he got the ball when he first started he passed it immediately. Being a bench warmer inspired the kid to study the game and the players he admired so that he could make an impact. When he finally did obtain a better understanding of the NBA game and some opportunities to show what he's got, he brought it. The kid had his coming out party against the Knicks and then followed that game with another very solid showing against the Heat which I was ecstatic to see live. He took it to the hoop, he passed well, he shot good %. He was efficient (at times the most efficient player on the court). At the end of the season he was averaging around 12.6 points per game while still getting comfortable with his newly obtained opportunities.

The day he brought it against the Knicks, nets fans were ecstatic because all season long they had waited to see why CDR's nickname was buckets in college.

CDR has stated in an interview that he's going to have a breakout season this upcoming year. He said he's ready to shock the world with his game when news broke out that VC was traded. I really hope that we do not include him in a trade for Boozer because I would absolutely hate having to watch both him and Ryan Anderson tear it up on other teams.

Some people think that it's worth the gamble trading CDR because we sort of have a log jam at the 2, but I think he has to be given the opportunity to compete for the 2 or the 3 this year. He needs to get the minutes that he deserves for all the hard work he's put in. He needs to be given the opportunity to prove himself.

Who knows he may very well grow into his nickname "Buckets" on the NBA level.

I think we should continue on this year with the idea of letting our young talent develop. If we pick up Boozer we may really hinder the development of guys like Yi and Brook.

Yi needs an opportunity to be our main 4 and Brook needs more touches period. We could either surprise this year with the talent that we have and exceed everyone's expectations again like we did last year or we could have a real tough season, still develop our youngins and get a high draft pick...hopefully high enough to pick up a guy like Derrick Favors for the 4.

If we do pick up Boozer. The Nets should do what they can to keep CDR because of his potential to be very special. Who knows...the Jazz may be very desperate to rid themselves of that contract. There's a small possibility that the nets front office pull in Boozer without one of our young guys in the deal. I wonder how this deal could go down without CDR?

If we do get Boozer, it may be nice for the development of Twill to have a lot of scorers around him so that he can get space to shoot and a player at every position that he could distribute to...

A line up of

Harris
Lee
Twill
Boozer
Lopez

could be a nice lineup for some good offense. With this lineup, Twill could not only work on rack up the assist, but also get some spacing to get confident with his shot.

I am divided with the Boozer story....

One side of me doesn't want that Nets sucks but other side saying what are we going to achieve if we get Boozer....a border line playoff team, exit in the first round.....

It looks like next years draft id going to be really loaded, we can be deep in lottery and snatch somebody real good and if Boozer is in our destiny we could get him in the FA (I think he and Amare can only be our realistic chances because of their dark sides)....

And Jazz would be 10 and more millions deep in the luxury tax plus the income they are going to lose by not getting their share from luxury tax pot...

I agree, Jazz is really a model franchise but their back is against the wall and all the other franchises are going try to fleece them...

Too my knowledge there is no other big contract left that has a buyout so Jazz is really playing for trade exceptions here....

As I said if we are not giving away any assets and its happens Ok, but all the other scenarios are not looking logical
