Dwayne Wade Likes the Nets, Probably Won’t Play Here

More from Fred Kerber and the NY Post. During the same movie shoot at the Izod Center yesterday where Dwight Howard talked about Courtney Lee’s emotional anguish, Dwayne Wade, one of the other high profile free agents to be next summer, put to rest the idea that he’s looking to leave the Miami Heat.

“I’m not thinking about the Knicks or the Nets. Only when we play them,” Wade told Kerber.

No shock here. But something I did find interesting was Wade’s positive comments about the direction of the Nets franchise.

“It’s a class organization and when the time is right, they’re going to go get the players they need to get. I think people around the league see that. They’ve had success, especially when J. Kidd was here . . . so everyone knows this organization has the want to be great. It’s just about if they get the players. They’ve got some now. Devin Harris is a great, great star. He’s a centerpiece.”

Then the kicker: “the main chatter right now is about the other side, New York, but I’m sure the Nets are going to get some love as well.”

As a Nets fan, it’s comforting to see comments like these about the state of the franchise from one of the league’s established superstars. Living on Long Island and New York City my entire life, I’ve always had to deal with pulling for a team that was second fiddle to the Knicks. This was especially frustrating when the Nets were busy making back-to-back finals, and the Knicks were doing jack squat. I know there’s always a certain allure about playing in New York City, but the Knicks just don’t have as much talent to build around going into next season. The only selling point is the city itself and it’s not like guys like Wade and Lebron are going to be hurting for endorsements, regardless of where they play.

love that the Nets are getting some positive press from unexpected places... take that Politi!

I hope Yi shows improvement this year, but i have a feeling that even if Yi averages maybe 16 points ans say 6 boards, they will still try to get Bosh, with the main focus being King James

Thanks for the comment Pookey. A big reason the Nets aren't getting a lot of buzz is because of all the Brooklyn talk and the fact that many think that this is a salary dump and that they won't spend the money next year. I don't think that, but many people do and that is why the Nets get overlooked.

Bosh is a unique talent though, and in terms of fitting with the Nets he could be the missing piece.

Bosh loves playing around the foul line and the high post. Brook excels in the low-post. That would be one of the most dangerous high-low combos in a long time.

One of the reasons Bosh and O'Neal didn't like to work is because they liked to play in the same areas. Brook and Bosh can dominate different areas at the same time. Combine that with the solid young guards/forwards we have (Devin, C.Lee, CDR, T-Will), and this is a scary team defensively.

Thanks for the comments guys!

It's nice to hear D Wade point out how there seems to be some respect for the Nets franchise. As long as Thorn is there I believe it gives the Nets legitimacy.

I agree w/ the comment about Bosh. History says 4's are not the key pieces to the puzzle.

Even though I'm not a Nets fan (Kings fan), I do find it interesting that one of the simultaneous abilities that the Nets opened up was significantly more cap space for themselves in the wake of trading VC. (When I'm not rooting for the Kings, I'm on the Magic wagon.) At any rate, though, I'm surprised that the Nets aren't drawing much attention from anyone given that they have some good young core pieces (Harris, Williams, Lee, and Lopez), and some serious cap space to draw a player like Chris Bosh to the Nets.

On the other hand, I'm not sure the Nets are the team that everyone wants to play with. Also, I'm not sure Bosh would leave the Raps to play for the Nets, but that's me.

Still, I find it interesting that nobody is talking about the Nets as a player. Outside of the Bulls and Knicks (both of whom have serious room next summer) along with Miami, I think the Nets would be the 4th most significant destination depending on how much cap room the Clippers have next summer as well.

Definite story to be watching. Excellent writeup Mark.

I think come next summer the Knicks management may wish they shared your 'probably won't play here' sensibilities regarding their talent dump over the past few years, and the fact that the Nets have both created cap room and built a core of young talent, not limited to Harris, will see them in a much better position. It's more than possible that Bosh is the only guy to move next year (particularly with the tax implications of coming to NY, NJ, CA, IL, etc), and does anyone really think he will lead them to a championship?
