This was done because of the presence of Boone in the starting line-up. Brook needed to stretch the defense as best as he can because defenses know Boone's range doesn't extend much past layup/dunk range. Him stretching the defense is critical especially considering the lack of healthy perimeter shooters the Nets currently have (Alston? Simmons? Terrence? Hassell? Nope.) I guarantee you that looking at his shot chart with Najera or Simmons (sigh) at the 4 or when Yi gets back, he'll be back planting in the low-post more often.

Frank addressed this specifically recently, calling Lopez one of the best shooters on the team. Of course he put a bit of a spin on it citing Josh's 'excellence' on the block rather than his ineptness outside of it.

And once he establishes position down low, his teammates need to get him the damn ball.

Love the analysis, and I agree. Brook Lopez is a good enough player to be effective even when he isn't in the post, but he's most dangerous down low. You can't really single-cover him there and it's pretty much a guaranteed basket if he gets it deep. Anything that results in him getting more touches down low is good for the Nets.
