CDR Coming Off The Bench?

by Sebastian Pruiti

Well, according to his twitter he will be tomorrow:

CD-R is officially coming off the bench now! I know that’s the best news a lot of yall Nets fans have gotten this year.

I will take a look at this in-depth tomorrow, but I think this move is for the best.  Both the Nets & CDR.  Before the year started, I said that I thought CDR had the potential to be a top 5 sixth man in the NBA, and I still do think he has the talent to do so.  He will also be playing with the second unit, which should give him more opportunities with the ball in his hands.  Now here is the question, who will start in his place?  My money is on Jarvis Hayes.  As Mark told me in an e-mail exchange (before this was announced by the way):

I still wonder what would happen if Kiki just started either Jarvis or TWill at the 3 going forward. You can then insert Hump and CDR at the same time for the second unit to give the offense a different look. You stick with the hot hand down the stretch. CDR playing with the four starters just never gets him into the flow of a game anymore. Probably Jarvis would be the best guy to start since he’s a shooter and a decent defender who doesn’t need a lot of touches to be effective.

More on this tomorrow morning.

Good news (for some of you, as CDR says) travels fast! I’m always amazed at how the people who “abhor” CDR’s Twitter page seem to be the first to read it!

Hope this means CDR will be TRADED soon. That’s really the best thing that could happen to him and his career. But this organization might be too petty to do that. Here’s hoping anyway..

  2. Mark Ginocchio Says:

I honestly hope this is the move that revives CDR’s season. A string of good games off the bench is the best way to quiet his critics. Coming off the bench SHOULD present him with better opportunities to do what he does best, which is put the ball in the basket.

  3. Memphis Slim Says:

What CDR needs is a NEW jersey. That would satisfy both his critics and his fans, wouldn’t it?

This is all personal. This isn’t about CDR’s skills or what’s “best for the team”. I’ll bet if the Nets offered CDR for trade, he would be picked up by other teams needing a Shooting Guard (his natural position). Probably won’t hurt that he has been capable playing OUT of position as a Small Forward either.

TRADE CDR so that he can “revive” his season, career and life.

I don’t understand this part: ” I know that’s the best news a lot of yall Nets fans have gotten this year.”

Is this sarcasm on his part?

@Memphis Slim. Judging by your name I am assuming that you are a CDR fan first Nets fan second. Think about this from the teams perspective. When CDR was the main scorer for us he looked great, and the stats show he scored efficiently. However, alot of his games he shot the ball 20 times and made 10 of the shots which is 50 percent but he basically took a large number of shots. He wasn’t getting to the line very often but he was scoring when alot of our scorers were out. We didn’t win any during this period but alot of them were close. Now with Devin Harris/YI/Lee back the team doesn’t need to rely on CDR for offense. He no longer gets the 20 shots he took. The load is more evenly distributed. CDR hasn’t adjusted to this. When he is in the lineup now he looks lost and doesn’t know how to contribute. This is partly Kiki’s bad coaching but it also rests on CDR. He needs to learn how to be effective without scoring to develop as an nba player. Like learn to move without the ball and get open for an easy jumpshot or drive.

Don’t want CDR traded. He makes very little and has proved he can be a very good player lets hope he takes this postively and gets back on track.

  8. DJ HeavyDuty Says:

I’m kinda happy about this move for 1 reason.
KiKi needs to be consistant with players.
CDR can have free reign on the B team.
Overall I feel like CDR got hosed!
What has CLee done to earn a starting job?

  9. Bobbo Says:

So much hand-wringing over a marginal NBA player. Instead of wanting to be traded, he should be grateful for the opportunity.

He is not a top five sixth man. He is a great self-promoter though.

  10. BrS 1 Says:

Lee stays on the starting lineup because of his DEF, CDR doesnt really bother on both ends anymore so he got benched, simply as that. Hes ganna bust more ass coming off the bench tho , thats one good thing, the good thing is that twill should start, thats if kiki believes in him ( he should because twill is a beast)

    @ Sparklespice

Your strokes are so broad for the picture you paint. You constantly make references to CDR being a “ballhog” and ineffective scorer. You might be interested to know that, behind Brook’s .517 FG%, CDR is next with .456, followed by Devin at .448, Yi at .426, and Lee at .402. Jarvis’ career FG% is .414/.389 this year.

How can the scoring load be more evenly distributed when CDR is only getting 1 or 2 shots per game? Or when the plays that are run do not even include him? Or when he is benched for 1/2 the game – even when he’s being effective.

Needs to find a niche other than scoring? In the last 3 games, CDR had 15 rebounds and 5 asts. Why do you say he looks lost? How many times is he “looked off” because the play isn’t meant to include him? Watch the games. Really watch. I don’t even want to go into his defense on Caron Butler or Iguodala, or Melo, etc.. This is done being randomly played short mins, benched major minutes, no chance for rhythm..

I know you are critical of CDR, but you refuse to see what he does actually bring to the team. That makes your opinion subjective only. If I am your coach or boss, and I want to highlight the skills of others, I can put you in a position to fail. That’s what’s been done to CDR.

CDR fans want him to be traded anywhere players are judged by how they PLAY and where the standards and performance accountibility are the same for every player. For CDR, it’s not New Jersey.

  12. Shea23 Says:

He kept is job for a long time because Kiki wanted to devolp young players but at this point I think the only thing keeping Lee in the lineup is the fact that he can play good defense. While I guess he’s been more agressive than CDR the last month or so.

As for CDR he’s the superior offensive player than Lee but isn’t the best defender which probably turn him into a liabilty on defense when he’s forced to guard small forward. If he’s not clicking on offense I guess feels there no reason to continue to start him out of position. I’d imagine Jarvis Hayes performence the last night (maybe even t will play the last couple of games) hurt him too. I’d think the plan going forward is for t will and hayes to share minutes at the 3 and for cdr and c lee to share minutes at the two.

  13. Shea23 Says:

I’m a big CDR fan but come on. 15 rebounds and 5 assits over 3 games amount to 5 rebounds a game (which isn’t) bad and like 1.6 assist a night. Add in the fact that he one of those night was a straong rebouidng night when he grabbed nine that means he only had 3 and 1.6 assists the other nights. Thats not exactly something to be bragging about as being an all around player.

If you want to talk about accountability fine over the last few weeks CDR has performed the worst of any of the starters. Regardless of agendas, attitude, system, plays being run for him. This is a FACT. Add in that Jarvis Hayes and Terrance have outperformed off the bench the last few games and its hardly suprising this hapened. Like I said above if he’s not scoring or being very effective in other areas you can’t justify starting at the 3 as a definsive liability. Now I really lke CDR, his game and passion but lets not pretend he’s been playing great lately or make too many execuses. Its likes he says you recongise the negatives to improve.

What I hope is being played when he can have plays called for him and being the focal point of the offense in his correct position will get him going again.

  14. Jordan Says:

“My money is on Jarvis Hayes.”

Why? Jarvis Hayes has been worse than TWill this year… and that’s saying a lot.

  15. asiel Says:

this will be a great move for us, Hayes is a good player and got a nice outside shot. then you got energy comin off the bench with twill and cdr, and a good defense with hump. i really think this will be a great move for the nets and will help get some wins

  16. Shea23 Says:

Hayes played what ten or 15 games. He was out all year with injury and wasn’t in shape it also hard to get in a groove comming in the middle of a season esp one like this hes starting to play like his old self from last year now.
