Why Are We Drawn to CDR?

chris-douglas-roberts-2010-1-5-23-10-35For a second round draft pick who’s not known as a shooter or for his defense, there’s just something oddly fascinating about the downward spiral of Chris Douglas-Robert’s 2009-10 NBA season.

He certainly showed flashes of being a rotation player late last season and earlier this season. While the roster was decimated by injury in November, CDR appeared to be riding shotgun with Brook Lopez as the only consistent offensive performers on the team, averaging 17.3 points points per game. But in the following months, CDR’s role on offense diminished greatly. Last month, he was replaced in the starting lineup by Jarvis Hayes, and rumors of him “falling out of favor” with coach Kiki Vandeweghe seemed to have put a further crimp on his playing time. On Sunday, he earned the dreaded, DNP-CD against the Memphis Grizzlies, and an unnamed team executive said Douglas-Roberts was late for a practice, as the reasoning. CDR disputed that claim on his Twitter page, a tool he often uses, rumor has it, much to the chagrin of Kiki and other members on the Nets front office.

Both Sebastian and I have spent a lot of time breaking down and analyzing CDR’s season from both a basketball-sense – which is obviously more objective – and from a more philosophical, subjective perspective. And it seems like many of the team’s beat writers take this approach with CDR as well. Because what’s not to like about a guy who always seems willing to talk candidly when a microphone or a notebook is shoved in front of his face. CDR has told the world in one way or another, that his team is soft, has no heart and has developed a new “system” of which he plays less of a role. He’s Tweeted about loving his “Memphis People” after trade rumors regarding sending him to the Grizzlies surfaced, and then emphatically denied he was pining for a trade after the fact.

And all of these factors have created a gravitational pull around CDR whether you love him or hate him. Has anyone questioned why Trenton Hassell hasn’t received playing time from Kiki Vandeweghe recently, despite playing above expectations earlier this season? How about Bobby Simmons who was one of the better shooting SFs in all of the NBA last season? Simmons hasn’t played in months.

CDR hasn’t been a factor in a Nets game in more than a month.  He plays a position where the Nets actually have some decent depth on the roster, and stand to acquire more depth giving the high profile names on this summer’s free agent list. Maybe it’s time for us all to collectively stop wringing our hands and obsessing over what CDR is doing, the good and the bad. If he’s truly falling out of favor with the organization, that will be demonstrated in due time when he is either traded this summer or released.  It just seems like a lot of ink has been spent rehashing something that seems to only be affecting one player who may or may not even be in the league a year from now.

Mark,

I'll take your bet on whether CDR is in the NBA a year from now -- or even years from now.

Don't you feel it a little strange that other coaches (including Lawrence Frank, recently) identify CDR as a talented and dedicated player? Other NBA players commend his game and encourage him to keep on developing and improving (Stackhouse, recently, Kobe, LeBron)?

For you, it's what-have-you-done-for-me-lately I presume. Well, given the chance (and I mean a REAL chance here with minutes and touches) I think you will see the CDR whom his fans know and appreciate.

Meantime, I'll still take your bet about CDR's NBA longevity, even if it's not with the Nets.

Kiki and Yi are just terrible. As long as those two are featured, the Nets set up for failure. We can sit here and argue about every player on this roster about their play this season. I do believe the team as a whole minus Yi, are really starting to get it. It's very tough to win in this league already, but its even tougher when the team has no structure and is playing handicapped each and every night. Kiki is a fool. To play Yi 30+ minutes a night and CDR 0 mins is a recipe for disaster. Kiki could care less about winning. To win, you put your players in the best position, so that they can succeed. There is obvious chemistry issues because of Yi. You can just look on the player's faces, but because they are professionals they have to keep playing. In my opinion, start devo, lee, t-will, hump and brook. CDR six man at the 2 position. As a team we play bad/ soft defense and we dont score enough. T-will and hump will help on the tough defensive aspect. Actually, benching Yi period will help with that. Also, giving a hard working offensive player in CDR minutes, could possibly help with the offense, possibly. In addition i believe T-will can benifit from playing next to those guys. He will create open 3's for lee and he can throw lobs or dump it off to guys like, brook and hump because they can catch and finish unlike Yi.

The heart of it is this: Kiki doesn't seem to care about getting *any* wins this year, and CD-R cares a lot. Kiki has stayed as the coach, and CD-R is ticked off and demoralized as a result. Trade him to a team that cares about winning (i.e. the other 29, now that Isiah is out at the Knicks) and he'll be lighting us up for years to come. And I'm not sure I'll be rooting against him.
This team has a President who only has his job because the Commissioner likes him, a coach who is both incompetent and unwilling, and no functional GM. Their best basketball mind spends his days as an announcer. It is ridiculous to make judgments about the what certain players can and cannot do until this craphole of a front office is cleared out and replaced with people who know how to lead a team and evaluate talent.

Gotta agree with the last poster. If you watch CDR during the games, he seems disinterested at best on the defensive end. Whatever it was that cost him his minutes, he would benefit from showing a little more effort in a facet of the game that the Nets are terrible at.

As far as his involvement in Twitter, blogs, radio... I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up on this thread to write a response (not a good thing). Access to players has changed by leaps and bounds, but having a guy buried on the bench constantly making pronouncements to a following of thousands puts you in a negative light to the franchise. Teams spend a lot of money carefully crafting and controlling their PR, only to be blindsided when a player makes a controversial statement on Twitter.

That's the entire CDR defense, the Kiki conspiracy theory. Just like how Frank had a vendetta against Sean Williams? Can we get Kiki in custody for 9/11 too? Then, it's gonna be a rift between David Stern and Kiki when we don't get the number one pick. David Kahn put their envelope in the freezer. And if Kiki loved Yi so much, why would he yank him from the game last time when he did stupid things? And maybe, just maybe, Lee earns the favor of the coaches because he plays defense

I just don't fully buy into the logic Andres. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely issues between Kiki and CDR from my viewpoint, if CDR kept producing like he did in November in Kiki's system, Kiki the GM would look like a genius for grabbing this guy in the 2nd round and paying him next to nothing in salary for 17 ppg. If Kiki is going to push Yi and Courtney to justify his trades and make himself look good, he should hypothetically do the same with CDR.

Personally, I think Kiki is an old-school guy and as a former player, probably just doesn't like a guy like CDR who uses a ton of different mediums (blogs, twitter, radio) to promote himself. I'm not saying this is fair or not, but I can see a guy like Kiki say CDR isn't "focused" because he's got too many personal projects going on away from his basketball team. Just a guess.

CD-R was a 2nd rounder, Kiki doesn't care that much about him, on the other hand Lee and Yi are the guy this moron traded our star players for (I actually think getting a prospect like Yi while getting rid of RJ was a good move).

Both Yi and Lee are Kiki's pet project. He wants to look like a genius. He will give them every chance to fail. They'll keep been given PT and starting roles, whether they produce or not. I actually don't dislike them, but it's obvious they both get special treatment from Kiki. Hayes is a fave of his too, always has been, and Kiki's is close friends with his agent. That guy doesn't deserve to start, period.

CD-R has shown far more than either Yi or Lee, yet hasn't been given the same opportunities (by Kiki, that's it). CD-R goes through a bad stretch during which he doesn't produce as much (thanks to Kiki's agenda), and they take him not only out of the starting 5, but of the rotation too. Come on.

I'm honestly not trying to sound like a jerk here, but why would Kiki show special treatment to all of the "young" players he acquired but CDR? The Nets got CDR in the second round and he was playing great in November. If they continued to push him, wouldn't Kiki and Thorn look like geniuses, stealing this high scorer in the second round of the draft? The CDR defenders have yet to demonstrate WHY Kiki would be more obsessed with Lee and Yi (and Jarvis? What?) than CDR. They are all part of the roster he built.

CD-R is by far the most talented wing this team has, at least from an offensive stand point. He was looking like a beast before Kiki took over. 17+ ppg and playing with great passion.

You know, I am not an Opie fan at all, and think his firing was ong overdue, but the guy did a great job with this kid. He says CD-R's is an unbelievable competitor, which anyone who saw how hard he was playing under Frank can agree on. Frank also said locker room attitude was never an issue.

This team is historically bad, and there are a bunch of losers who could care less about winning.

CD-R is not only a talented scorer, he also is a great competitor.

Kiki and his agenda have killed the kid's production and his passion. Bring in an ACTUAL and fair coach and you'll see CD-R playing at a high level again.

A guy like Courtney Lee has done absolutely nothing special, and has stunk the gym up for most of the season, but he start to play at a decent level on O (scoring 12 ppg with decent %) and of all the sudden he's seen as a great asset, lol. He's playing better as of late, but his level is far inferior to CD-R's when he was being coached by Frank.

Don't forget Lee was in Frank's doghouse during his last game as Nets HC. Why? Pretty simple, bc he wasn't producing. Then Kiki takes aover and the 1st thing he does is giftwrap Lee his starting role and minutes back.

I like Lee, but I don't like to see some guys getting special treatment. Everyone talks about Kiki's blind love for Yi, but how about his other pets, Lee and Hayes?

People like CD-R bc he has shown he has the talent to be a solid player for us, and we have a team this bad but have to see the kid glued to the bench, while others have been given a free ride all season long.
