Quick Recap: New Jersey Nets 103, Charlotte Bobcats 94

February 16th, 2010 3 comments

The Nets kicked off the second half of their season in style, beating the Charlotte Bobcats 103-94 on the road tonight, notching their fifth victory of the season.

  • Courtney Lee, Devin Harris and Brook Lopez supplied the offense for the Nets tonight, but they probably don’t pull this off tonight without Josh Boone, who in playing his first meaningful minutes in more than a month, scored 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, including an offensive board with just over a minute left in the game that lead to a Jarvis Hayes three, putting the nail in Charlotte’s coffin.
  • Devin Harris had a great all around game with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists.
  • Brook Lopez had 16 points and 3 blocks before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
  • Courtney Lee scored 10 of his team-high 21 points in the first quarter, fueling an 31-point offensive barrage for the Nets in the quarter.
  • The Nets shot 51.9 percent for the game, against one of the league’s better defenses. They also outrebounded Charlotte 47-36.
  • Terrence Williams (4 points) had an amazing one-handed dunk in the second quarter from just past the free throw line. Wonder if someone was trying to make a statement regarding the participants in this past weekend’s Slam Dunk Competition.

Game 53 Preview Vs. Charlotte Bobcats

February 16th, 2010 6 comments

So now that All-Star weekend is behind us, every Nets’ fan full attention should be on whether or not the Nets can get 6 more wins to avoid the worst record ever in the history of the NBA.  Will they be able to?  I am not sure, but games like these could end up being pretty good indicator.

This isn’t the same Bobcat team that the Nets beat for their first win though.  The Bobcats have been playing incredibly well for the past couple of months.  In fact, they are currently sitting 1 game above 500.  Onto the lineups…

Devin Harris vs. Raymond Felton

The All-Star break was perfect timing for Devin Harris.  He came back from injury, played very well in 4 games, then got hurt again (the collision).  He returned for the last game before the break and played pretty well again, hopefully this can continue moving forward.

Advantage:  Push

Courtney Lee vs. Stephon Jackson

Stephon Jackson is the guy who makes this team go.  There was a noticeable difference in how the Bobcats played before he was traded and then after he was traded.  Also, if he gets going and doesn’t force shots, he could have a big game tonight.  Lee’s biggest responsibility won’t be on the offensive end tonight.  His main objective is to keep Stephon Jackson from getting hot.

Advantage:  Stephon Jackson

Jarvis Hayes vs. Gerald Wallace

Gerald Wallace is another guy who gives you trouble.  In the Nets’ win, Wallace was able to grab 20 rebounds.  That is just plain ridiculous, and a lot of it had to do with Wallace’s skill, but some of it had to do with CDR being undersized against a guy like Gerald Wallace at the 3.  Now I am not saying Hayes will be able to keep him off the glass, he just has a better chance to do so.

Advantage:  Gerald Wallace

Yi vs. Boris Diaw

Yi and Boris Diaw are the same exact player to me.  They both are soft PF guys who are used to try and stretch the floor by their respective teams.  Both aren’t really that good on the defensive end either.  The only difference is Diaw tends to be a better passer and Yi is the better shooter.  Other than that I think they are the same player.

Advantage:  Push

Brook Lopez vs. Nazr Mohammed

Nazr Mohammed could give Brook some trouble.  Nazr is the type of defender Brook struggles against.  The bigger guy that can push him out of his spot.  Hopefully this doesn’t result in him settling for outside jumpers.

Advantage:  Brook Lopez

With The 1st Pick In The NBA Draft, The Nets Select…

February 16th, 2010 5 comments

Overview

The Reasoning

Well, because it is John Wall, of course!  In all seriousness though, when we did this series of posts, I was surprised to see all this Evan Turner love while everyone seems to be dismissing John Wall.  I mean, it is close, but John Wall is the better player than Evan Turner, and if the Nets get the first pick, they need to draft John Wall, no questions asked.  A lot of you seemed to be worried because he is a one and done player, and some of you are worried because he is coming out of a coach Calipari system.  I am going to list two guys who were both, Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans and they both are turning out pretty well (Evans was the Rookie-Sophmore MVP while Rose just made his first All-Star game), and just about everyone who has seen John Wall live says that he is better than both of those guys were in school.  Plus drafting John Wall makes Devin Harris available to trade (not saying I want this), and that is another asset to work with.  Not to mention that he is good friends with LeBron and that everyone in the NBA seems to identify Wall as the best college player.  You can scoff at this, but I think drafting John Wall gives the Nets a better chance at a big name free agent than what we could get from drafting Evan Turner.

Player Comparisons

We already know the best case scenario, a better version of Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans.  Say what you will about coach Calipari (and it probably is true), but he can churn out point guards.  There is a reason he is recruiting these guys, they are very good, and their games work in his up and down system.  Draft Express lists Wall’s worst case scenario as a 6’4″ Kyle Lowry.  That is a pretty good player, but not 1 you want to take with the #1 pick.

Nets on the Net: 2/16/10 Edition

February 16th, 2010 3 comments

A Dave D’Alessandro report makes it sound pretty convincing that Rod Thorn will keep his job in the Mikhail Prokhorov regime.

Al Iannazzone examines how the Nets can get six more wins to avoid all-time infamy: The breakdown is: they have 30 games and 17 are at home; nine are against West teams, four of which are at home; 13 are against teams below .500 at the break and six are at home.

Kkii Vandeweghe throws cold water on the idea that the Nets will make a trade before this week’s trade deadline.

Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News advises John Calipari to steer clear of the Nets.

Fox Sports includes the Nets as part of their all-star break round-up, “six teams with questions” down the stretch.

With The 2nd Pick In The NBA Draft, The Nets Select…

Overview

The Reasoning

A lot of people are talking about John Wall as if he is the only true prize in the draft.  This is an incorrect though.  If John Wall is considered the best player in the country, Turner should be considered 1B.  Turner can play the SG and the SF spot, though if we draft Turner, this means the Nets will be going for a big-name PF Free Agent instead of LeBron or Wade.  Not saying that is a problem, just putting it out there.

Player Comparison

You guys had this discussion in the comments of the Wes Johnson post, comparing him to Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan (take it easy on that guys).  Draft Express has his best case scenario as Brandon Roy, and I like that comparison a lot.  Their games are very similar, and they both have the same type of play, no real flash, but they get the job done without question.  Draft Express lists their worst case scenario as Anthony Parker.  Parker is a nice player, but when you are taking someone with the second pick, you are hoping for something better than Parker.

Who Can Coach the Nets?

February 15th, 2010 7 comments

While Sebastian breaks down some potential members of the Nets core after this summer’s draft, the next thing that must be considered when discussing the rebuilding of this organization is who’s going to be the person to coach this team back to respectability. With some of the rumors that have been flying around the past week, it’s clear that Mikhail Prokhorov is going to look to make a big splash with his head coach. But while some of the names that are being tossed around are splashy, are they really the answer? I’m going to go through some of the early, big name candidates, and give you my initial impressions:

Mike Krzyzewski – Coach “K” is a college coaching legend with 28 seasons at Duke University, which include three National Championships, 10 Final Fours and scores of ACC conference championships and NCAA tournament victories. Adding to his cachet was his role as head coach go the 2008 U.S. National team, aka the “Redeem Team” which won gold in Beijing Olympics. Given that some of the top players on the Olympic Team (cough, LeBron, cough) will be free agents this summer, Coach K could help lure these guys to the swamp. The problem is, Krzyzewski has played this game with NBA teams before. He’s been previously offered coaching jobs in Boston and Los Angeles, and rejected both. You also have to remember his leave of absence in the 1990s due to health reasons. Would Coach K put his health at risk with the high-stress schedule of the NBA, and if so, why would he make the leap to the Nets after turning down offers from much more ballyhooed organizations?

Rick Pitino – Great college coach, sure, but his stint in the late 90s with the Boston Celtics makes me question his abilities to coach again in the NBA. His now famous “Larry Bird is not walking through that door” speech has come to symbolize his inability to handle the Boston media during his stint there. How would he handle the New York City media, as the Nets make their transition to Brooklyn, attempt to lure top free agents, and bring along one of the top picks in the draft?

John Calipari – On a personal level, I probably wouldn’t be able to handle Coach Cal again, but there are legit reasons to look elsewhere beyond my own personal feelings for the guy. Calipari was unmitigated disaster in New Jersey in the 1990s. As demonstrated by his college coaching career, he’s constantly seeking greener pastures, jumping to better college programs when he has the chance, which would bring instability to the position if the Nets brought him back to the NBA. While some guys have loved playing for Calipari, they’ve been notably labeled as “his” guys, while players like Jayson Williams and Kendall Gill, talented players in their own regard, have been thrown under the bus by Calipari because he didn’t like how they didn’t buy into his schtick. Some analysts are throwing the John Wall card out there because Calipari currently coaches the assumed No. 1 pick at Kentucky. But if the Nets don’t win the lottery, that point is moot, and besides, if Wall is such a special talent, I’m sure he can play for a coach other than Calipari if he does end up with the Nets. Please, please, please don’t consider this guy.

Jeff Van Gundy – Unlike some of the other big names being tossed around, JVG is the only one whose positive coaching achievements have been built up over the long-term in the NBA. It’s true that with the Knicks and the Houston Rockets, he never won the big one, and you can even argue that his Rockets teams underachieved, but his team’s have always been known for their toughness and defense, two things this current Nets bunch sorely lacks. His resignation from the Knicks in 2001 was sudden, and that always creates doubts about the franchise’s stability with a guy like that at the top, but if JVG is indeed interested in getting back to coaching in the NBA, I really hope the Nets consider this guy.

With The 3rd Pick In The NBA Draft, The Nets Select…

February 15th, 2010 6 comments

No video for this one guys, sorry.  Couldn’t get my hands on any game files for Georgia Tech.  I have seen a bunch of their games live though, so I feel like I can talk about Favors game in detail.

Overview

The Reasoning

I know that Derrick Favors is to be considered somewhat of a “project,” and right now the Nets need a guy that can contribute a ton right away.  Derrick Favors is just too good (and I really think that he is going to be a big time player in the NBA) to pass up at the three spot though.  Also, I think that pairing him up with Brook would allow him to put up some pretty good numbers, while still developing his game.  Imagine this.  Brook getting on the post, and gets doubled by the opposing team 4 man.  Favors cuts on the double, and Brook hits him for the dunk.  I mean, I get chills thinking about it.

Player Comparison

In my opinion the best case scenario for Favors is Amar’e Stoudemire.  They have the same body type (Favors actually weighs 250, but he is so tall and lanky he looks skinnier), and right now they have the same type of athleticism.  Plus their offensive game is really similar when you look at Stoudemire’s rookie season and Favors right now.  Favor’s worst case could be Tyrus Thomas.  Just a guy with great athleticism, but no feel, or real willingness to develop an inside game.

Nets on the Net: 2/15/10 Edition

February 15th, 2010 No comments

Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Rod Thorn will likely not fire Kiki Vandeweghe for the alleged under the table deal he made with Del Harris to become head coach of the Nets. Meanwhile, Tom Barrise, is headed to coach Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Rod Thorn is on his way to Vancouver to meet with Mikhail Prokhorov, while those back in New Jersey are working on getting the Nets to Newark next season.

Jerry Colangelo told the Daily News he is interested in a return to the NBA under certain conditions: “I would have to have full autonomy,” Colangelo told the Daily News. “I’m not looking to become a general manager. But if the right job came along I’d be willing to talk to anyone. Life is all about opportunities.”

Jay-Z and LeBron James threw an after party during All-Star weekend which Rod Thorn attended.

Looking at the business side of basketball, the New York Times reports that it’s unlikely that LeBron James would help the stock of MSG, a recent spinoff of Cablevision owners of the Knicks, trading on the NASDAQ.
