A Couple Guest Posts

Mark and I always encourage you guys to e-mail us with questions or thoughts on the Nets (our e-mails can be found on the contact page).  If yours is interesting, well written, and level-headed we would love to post it.  Over the past two days, Mark and I got two e-mails exactly like this, and we decided to post them here.  I am not saying I agree/disagree with either, but they were both interesting, and I thought they both could lead to interesting discussions in the comments.

First we have an e-mail from Christopher Cavallo on the draft:

Hey guys. Been following the site for awhile now, and as a long time Nets fan, this year has obviously been really difficult for a couple reasons. One of the few high points about a year like this is the lottery pick implications. Lucky for us, I think this is a very special draft class.  And I think today exhibited that fact nicely.

12:00 pm. Ohio State v. Michigan. Kentucky v. Tennessee. Evan Turner. John Wall.

Demarcus Cousins? Possibly. If things go terribly wrong.

I was faced with the hardship of a Nets/Celtics game at 1pm, and the sheer terror of imagining watching all three games at one time. So I opted to watch the Nets game later. I have NBA League Pass Broadband, so all 50-odd Nets losses are archived for me for weeks, thank the Lord.

I just have some basic thoughts on what I saw.

Evan Turner is absolutely for real. And he may indeed be as good as John Wall. While Michigan isn’t the same caliber team as Tennessee, I thought Evan Turner far outplayed John Wall in his respective game today. They are both playmakers, for sure. Wall is more explosive. Turner is more polished. Does this mean I think the Nets would take Turner with the #1 overall? Absolutely not. It does comfort me greatly that history’s streak of rewarding a team WITHOUT the worst record the #1 pick may extend into the lottery this year—because we have other options.

I paid equal attention to both games today. I did NOT see every play from both games. Here’s what I witnessed, from my bed, in my lazy Saturday afternoon haze:

Evan Turner – 8/11 shooting – 0/0 3pt – 2/3 ft – 11 reb – 7 asts – 4 blks – 8 TOs – 18pts

John Wall – 6/16 shooting – 0/4 3pt – 7/8 ft – 5 reb – 6 asts – 0 stl – 5 TOs – 19 pts

They both played 39 minutes. Turner had a steal too, along with his blocks. They both are forced to control the ball. Turner may control the ball even more than Wall, which is alarming. They both have terrific handles. They both force the issue and sometimes get into trouble.

Specifically today, Wall really cost his team down the stretch with a charge. He was having success the entire game getting into the middle of the lane. Especially off the fast break. Wall led the charge and erased a double digit deficit late in the 2nd half. Two coast to coast And 1’s had Ian and Jim reminiscing about Jason Kidd, and had Kentucky back in the ball game. In the closing minutes, Wall forced himself back into the middle, ran over a Tennessee big man, and great defense ended this game.

Wall did a good job finding open men, matching his average in assists. Wall also has to contend with Bledsoe, who goes haywire for spurts and dominates the ball. Turner faces issues like that less, although Buford (any relation to Rodney?) sometimes attempts the same. It was certainly not Wall’s best game, but his open court brilliance and his ability to take over games for long stretches at a time is breathtaking to watch. He loves to get his teammates involved, but he also knows when he has to take over. It didn’t work out today, that’s all.

Over on ESPN, at the same time, Evan Turner floored me. At 6’7”, Turner should not be able to handle the ball that well. His midrange game was perfection today. He was 8/8 before missing his final three shots. Turner had a couple drive-pullups to the baseline, all of which he swished. In first half, he had a ridiculous cross-over to behind the back dribble stop that froze his defender dead, only to watch another mid range jump shop hit nothing but net.

One of the key moments of the game saw a driving Michigan defender fly by the defense, only be completely negated by a backboard pinching block by Turner.  Turner flew down the length of the court, found an open man, collected the missed basket, got by a defender and laid the ball. He looked like he exerted no effort. His movements are silky smooth, and his jump shot, when in range, is beautiful. He is a weak three point shooter, but he never forces them, as evidenced today. 0/0.

The block on the aforementioned play was one of four. He’s a tight defender with long arms and great instincts. The only mar on his state line is the 8 TOs. When you control the ball that much, I suppose turnovers are bound to happen.

In conclusion—John Wall will be the #1 pick for Nets, if we are fortunate enough to get that pick. Evan Turner at #2 would be a hell of a consolation prize.  Thanks for all your coverage! Hope the draft watch continues. I love college basketball.

The second is from Jake Alpert on the Nets’ Future:

Seeing as this season has virtually come to a close for the Nets, I got to thinking ahead to some off-season moves they might want to consider making.

1. Trading for a superstar point guard:

If the Hornets do not make the playoffs this year, it is quite possible that they will think of making changes just as they had with the firing of former Net coach Byron Scott. Although he is the face of the franchise, I do not believe that Chris Paul is untouchable. My idea of a good trade for the Nets would be to offer Devin Harris, Terrence Williams, and the 2010 first round draft pick to the Hornets for Chris Paul. The Hornets will receive a player who has already made an all-star appearance in Devin Harris who also has many very good years ahead of him. Terrence Williams is also a player who has shown flashes this season of becoming a solid NBA player. The first round pick, with the Nets record this season, will most likely wind up with one of the picks 1-5, which gives the Hornets the option to possibly take future stars of John Wall, Evan Turner, or DeMarcus Cousins. Chris Paul would bring an energy and leadership to the point guard position that hasn’t been seen by the Nets since Jason Kidd brought them to back-to-back championship appearances.

2. Big name free agents:

After this season, the Nets need to make a splash. The combination of an uncapped year and the amount of money coming off the book should prove to be key for landing big name players. Although it would be amazing to get Lebron James, it is relatively unrealistic because of the speculation that he will stay a Cavalier or go to the Knicks. A player that is a definite possibility would be Chris Bosh. He is a perfect fit for a Nets lineup that is reasonably weak in the frontcourt. Other players that should be considered are Al Harrington, who is very versatile in his game, Rudy Gay, who is developing into a superstar, and Richard Jefferson, who loved it in New Jersey and would be a great homecoming for a great player. Also consider resigning Jarvis Hayes, who’s proven to be a nice player coming off the bench.

3. NBA Draft:

If the Nets trade away their first overall pick, they still have the 23rd and 31st overall picks. I’m not sure where they should go with the 31st pick, maybe Sherron Collins or Jarvis Varnardo or Jerome Dyson. As for the 23rd overall pick, I suggest they choose Paul George out of Fresno State. He is NBA ready in terms of size, with a 6’8” 210 pound frame. The strengths on his scouting are immense and the weaknesses listed are all easily correctable. He is very versatile with his jump shot, ability to create his own shot, and his rebounding and shot blocking ability. As a freshman, he shot 44.7 percent from beyond the arc, which would be a huge help to a team that has had the worst three point shooting percentage in the league. There are many upsides with him and it should prove to be a low risk and valuable pick.

Let’s discuss this stuff in the comments, and remember if you want an e-mail posted here, send them over.  Mark and I love to read them.

"CP3 is a top 4 PG of all time, along with Magic, Isiah, and Oscar."

you gotta be kidding, right?

CP3 is a top 4 PG of all time, along with Magic, Isiah, and Oscar. So yeah that trade would be fine.

Anyway, I think the Nets should draft Turner and sign Joe Johnson and Boozer or Amare.

Harris, Johnson, Turner, Boozer/Amare, and Brook.

Sounds like a good starting 5 to me.

trade devin, twilliams, and a top 4 pick for CP3 ???
are you outta your mind ?? i love cp3 ....but not worth all that...no thank you

the Nets need more defense and a defensive minded head coach. That's why even though Yi went 20 and 19 people still bashed him, because Blatche had a HUGE game, and the 2 "game winning" shots were both hit over his outstretched arms. Yi has no feel for the game, let's just get rid of him.

Chris Paul is not expendable because of Collison, he is Chris Paul. Maybe Terrence could run the point that would be awesome, I really like the ball in his hands. We need to draft more defensive minded players and get rid of guys like Yi (although I do like Humphries off the bench for some reason)

1 last name for the draft
Greivis Vasquez

This may be the most important summer ever for the Nets. Noone wants to make a mistake.
Drafting Wall could get Lebron to sign with the Nets.
The Nets already have an"allstar" PG.
I like the idea of trading DH, he is not a championship PG and seems to be a tad DIVA-ISH.
CP3 could be expendable with Collinson and Thorton playin above expectations.
Turner would be a great pick also, especially if Lebron wants to stay in Cleveland.
Hopefully the Nets can draft a PF with the Mavs 1st rd pick.
Monroe, Aldrige, Or Cousins would be great next to Brook Lopez.
The Nets don't NEED 2 max players but it would be nice.
Bosh, and Boozer are the top PFs in free agency but will they hurt Brooks development into a HOF player?
The Nets need a "moose" like Thorn said, someone to rebound, hustle and defend
I can't wait until the playoffs!

Chris

"How about Harris/Lee/Turner/Amare/Lopez?
Not ideal. But a worst case scenario."

I actually think that'd be best case scenario. I love it, and don't think it's impossible it could happen.

Sign Stat and Mike Miller, draft Turner and Varnado

Harris/TWill/KD?
Lee/CDR
Turner/Miller
Stat/Yi/Hump
Lopez/Varnado/Boone?

I'd take Evant Turner over John Wall in a heartbeat. I'll be disappointed if we passed on Turner with the 1st pick.

And I think trading Devin, TWill and our top4 pick for Paul would be sheer lunacy. I wouldn't trade a top 2 pick in this draft straight up for Paul, let alone the pick, Harris and TWill. NO WAY.

As for Yi, he ain't a starter, but at least he could be a good stretch PF for 15-20 minutes a night. He had 20/19 last night and people kept bashing him really hard, I think we've come to a point where the haters will throw him under the bus no matter what, which is really sad.

In regard to potential FA signings, I think people need to realize that we don't have a shot at LeBron or the other top tier FAs. Maybe Stat. But that's it.

I hope we don't overspend on 3rd tier FAs like Gay and Lee. They are good players and they would be upgrades over what we have there, but giving them the big bucks ain't the answer. Plu,s both of them are TERRIBLE defenders. I'd rather sign cheaper rotation players who won't compromise our flexibility and who are better fits (see Udonis Haslem, Tyrus Thomas). I would rather take on Kirilenko's contract(which expires in 2011 and would be is the kind of forward we need) than give Gay $12M/per.

Harris/TWill/KD?
Turner/Lee
AK/CDR
Thomas or Haslem/Yi/Hump
Lopez/Mavs pick/Boone?

For the Dallas pick I like Jarvis Varnado, a defensive big who can rebound and protect the paint. Also, I strongly believe Williams will play the backup PG role, he's already said he will play more PG next year.

I think it would be a mistake to give up on Devin Harris. He is a young All-Star point guard who just need more talent around him. He also needs to stay healthy but thats another thing altogether. Also I think a veteran defensive-minded coach could get Harris to play defense the way he did in Dallas which would be huge for the team. John Wall has a lot of physical tools but he basically plays off of his athleticism right now which means there is certainly a bust potential there. @Amari nailed it right on the head with Evan Turner, he really does remind me of Brandon Roy. Sure Turner cant shoot it like Roy can but other than that they are very comparable. The combination of Lee, TWill and Turner would be a solid perimeter group that would just need a veteran shooter such as Rasual Butler, Kyle Korver, Jason Kapono, etc. Those 3 are all free agents to be. Then we just need a PF. Yi is at the very best a decent bench player and if we use him in that role im ok with keeping him but we need a legit starting PF. Using that cap space on David Lee would very smart as he would fit nicely next to Brook and he would fix our rebounding issues. Bosh isnt coming to NJ and I'd take Lee over Amare and Boozer right now mainly for defensive purposes. Harris/Lee/Turner/Lee/Lopez with Dooling, TWill, FA shooter, Yi, Hump, plus our other 1st rd pick and 2nd rd pick would be a solid bench as long as one of those other picks is a serviceable big man, since we would still need a solid defensive-minded C to back up Lopez.

His dream is Brook Lopez as a hall of fame center. I don't think it's impossible.

How about Harris/Lee/Turner/Amare/Lopez?

Not ideal. But a worst case scenario. I really like it. Maybe shoot for Melo next offseason. I for one still believe in Devin Harris. He's not a shooter. Neither is Wall, however.

@ Shea 23

I don't understand what you are saying.

I'm gonna throw ths out there as my dream. Future All Star Brook Lopez NO future, hall of famer brook lopez.

It can happen.

@ Rob

Those superstars can talk all they want about wanting to or not wanting to come to the Nets, but in the end it seriously is almost only about the money, believe me. If LBJ gets offered 6 year 140M from the knicks and 6 year 160M from the Nets, I assure you that he would sign with the Nets. I'll bet you the Knicks terrible management would give him 6 year 220M if they had to. Haha.

Put Lee in that empty PF spot...

Concerning TWill, I think he is better when he plays off the ball mostly, with spurts of ball-handling. When he runs the offense every play, he tends to rush things, force turnovers and not think things through. However, when he can play for a few minutes off the ball, then run a couple plays with it, he can be great. Plus he's dynamic on the break.
I agree with Adam. Get Yi out of here. I would take a 2nd rounder in the 2014 draft. I don't care. Not only does he play horribly, he seems to have plays run for him, instead of future All-Star Brook Lopez.
In terms of the draft? I think that if Devin has a strong finish to the season, it would make it really easy. Go for Wall at the #1 spot. He is the only player in this draft who could become a top 5 player in the NBA some day. Turner is really good, but I just don't see him being an alpha dog. If we can grab Wall, that becomes mighty attractive. LeBron (I know its a pipe dream but still) has complimented Lopez multiple times and is friends with Wall. We could grab Wall, a PF with the 2nd pick, someone like Andy Rautins, G at Syracuse, in the 2nd round to pair with LeBron and maybe a lesser FA like David Lee?
Oh god this season would be worth it if that happened...
PG: Wall, SG: TWill SF: LeBron, PF: ? C: Lopez with Lee, Dooling, Humphries off the bench...

@ adam Terrence is best at the point guard spot, or point forward he's versatile enough to play all 3. But his creative vision is best at the 1, like Magic. He's going to look very good with more talent around hm sort of like a glue guy.

I like Turner but can he play the 2 guard? I really want Terrence to succeed and I think he can be not just a good starter but an all star one day

(you all know how it feels to be a Net fan, let me have some hope)

Lee has been playing well recently so if we draft Turner there is going to be a lot of talent around the PG, SG, SF spot

Harris, Lee, Terrence, Turner

(do we sign Rudy? CDR prob gone)

Honestly I would rather take Evan Turner and keep Harris. Turner reminds me of a combination of Brandon Roy, Granger, and Hardaway. I already seen Harris put up 30 + on the so called best point guards last year. Thats when he has a Robin or Batman on the wing with him. I just feel adding Turner maybe a Rudy Gay and David Lee would be our best route. Save money for Carmelo and Durant or Pal if still healthy.

I just think Wall's hype is way better than his game, he is not Carmelo or Durant in College those guys dominated, Wall has not. If he's supposed o be Derrick Rose like, is Rose that good??? or that much better than Harris??? I think Turners going to be Niccceee!!!!

I would love Bosh, but he definitely doesn't want to come to the Nets. I believe only Lebron and Amar'e said anything positive/constructive about actually coming to the Nets.

I'm starting to like Evan Turner more than John Wall but I guess we have to listen to the experts on this one. The one thing that I would love would be for us to trade away or just cut Yi. Please. Please cut Yi. I don't know or care what it would do to the salary cap. I don't care if we trade him for the last pick in the second round and some terrible benchwarmer (the equivalent of Battie or something) but please, I CAN'T watch this guy play. It is so frustrating. I love watching Terrence on the floor, he looks great with the ball in his hands and on a better team I think he would be a lot more productive (hopefully the Nets don't ruin him), and I love watching Lopez. CDR, eh, Courtney Lee, maybe there is something to him, but please, please, no more Yi. Isn't it hard enough to be a Nets fan?

Thanks for posting this, guys.

Does the rise of Evan Turner change anyones mind about who we draft #1?

He is the consensus player of the year as of right now.
