Is This The Real Kris Humphries?

When the Nets traded for Kris Humphries in exchange for Eduardo Najera, I was pretty excited.  Not only were the Nets able to get rid of Najera (who looked like he was running with a torn hamstring), but they brought in a young guy who showed flashes.  Early on, it looked like the Nets got away with highway robbery as Humphries brought his defensive energy and that was a new attitude for this team.  He was also scoring, in his first 9 games as a Net, Humphries reached double-digits 4 times (including two 20 point games), and got 9 two other times.  Sure he was taking some tough jumpers, but he made them so it was ok.  He’d settle down when he wasn’t as hot (shot 45.1% in January).

I was really high on Humphries, I was starting to think that the only reason he didn’t produce in his previous spots was just because he played behind really good players (Bosh in Toronto, Boozer in Utah, and Dirk in Dallas).  However, Humphries has hit a rough patch over the past two months.  He is still bringing the defensive intensity, there is no question about that.  The offensive end has been a completely different story though.  Remember those tough shots Humphries was making early on?  Well, he’s still taking them, but not making them at the rate he was (45.1% in January – 39.4% since – keep in mind his minutes has bascially been the same during his stay here), and when he makes the catch on the high post, you can pretty much assume he is going up with it.  No matter how well defended he is.

The question Nets fans and the Nets front office has to ask now is whether or not this is the real Kris Humphries or not, or was the real Kris Humphries the one we saw in January.  Personally, I think the Humphries we have seen the past two months is the “true Kris Humphries.”  The reason is Idon’t think he can maintain the shooting percentage to be an effective scorer in this league.  He takes too many bad shots, and takes the offense out of his flow too much.  He hasn’t only done this in New Jersey, this has been his knock every stop he has been at.

That’s not saying he isn’t a serviceable player, because I think he is one, but what I am concerned about is whether there is a spot for him on this team.  Better yet, what is his role?  One of the Nets’ biggest needs is power forward.  I think Yi has proven he can’t handle the starting responsibilities, so the Nets will be bringing a starting power forward (that is pretty much assumed), but who is going to be the backup?  In my opinion, Kris Humphries is the more valuable backup if you bring in an offensive minded PF to start, but are the Nets really going to stick Yi on the bench for good (Orlando showed that having 3 PFs on your roster doesn’t work – Brandon Bass hasn’t played much all year)?  I guess what I am getting to is don’t expect to see much of Kris Humphries next year unless Yi goes down with an injury.  Now, some of you guys may have already assumed that, but I have to admit, I got a little excited seeing a guy play with that type of intensity on the defensive end and being productive on the offensive end.

I think what happen with Kris Humphries, inconsistant play of late is Kiki's fault,he started bringing kris of the bench later than he did when Kris was playing good, then YiKiki then he puts him at crucial times when he was sitting on the bench for a long time,in other words he was setting Kris up to fail.I believe he don't want Kris to succeed,i see how he gets upset when Kris is not playing pulling him out of the game quickly, but when Yi makes numerous mistakes he let's him play longer,at least when Kris is playing he plays hard dispite his flaws, you can't say that about Yi can you Yiki!

I hope I don't jinx him but Favors is gonna overtake Cousins as the clear cut #3 and might even go top 2. He's been beasting lately. He's young and he has TERRIBLE guards, so he's been held back all year.

Given the China marketing angle, I'm betting that Yi will be on the team next year, regardless. That doesn't mean that he'll start, and I'm guessing that he won't. If you're going to keep a third power forward, he probably needs to also be able to back up Lopez, and I wouldn't be opposed to bringing Boone back over Humphries in that role.

Unfortunately, the top of the draft consists of two guards, in a year when the Nets, of course, need both a 3 and a 4. I'm guessing that they'd have to take Wall if they get the first pick - the experts see more in him than I do, though clearly he's very very good. But the best choice for the team might well be Favors, especially since they have the luxury of two years in Newark for him to work on his game and grow into the position.

That leaves you with the luxury of only needing a 3 in free agency, which is a much easier task, and leaving significant money over for the following season's free agent class.

Toast
Johnson is my pick. he had a hand injury for the last month but he is heating up again.

DJ HD: Favors and Cousins seem to be the consensus 3 & 4 picks. Aldrich isn't that highly rated generally, and the Nets won't take a center with their top pick. The real problem is if they pick #4 and Cousins is the one left... then I think they go for Wes Johnson, who might be less talented overall.

Yi annoys me because what I want from a reserve at PF is D which he won't give, he might stretch the floor a little or be more consistent against a second unit but meh. I'm tired of giving him chances I don't think theres anything there. I know Hump isn't a great defender either which is why I could say cut them both loose and start fresh at PF next year. I don't have porblem with Hump sticking around either to give energy off the bench but doubt the nets do this over Yi. Honestly I think getting Yi's 4 million of the books would be good. Its likely we could get a good reserve for that money this year which right now is best case for Yi.

If the choice is Humph or Yi, I'll take Humph, even with the obvious flaws in his game. He just brings more intensity to the floor. Bottom line - we need to upgrade at PF.

Are we really talkin about re signing Hump?
Who cares?
What if the Nets get the #4 pick and Wall, Turner, and Cousins are gone?
Who are the Nets gonna pick?
WJohnson
Aldrige
Favors
How about a head to head comparision of CLee and CDR? Best 20 games vs worst 20 games with 24+ mins played.
Twill the Nets "real" PG?
Kris Humpries is wack

I see the Nets getting 1 max guy though Im not sure the person we get will deserve the max money. We really do need a quality power forward but I'm not sure there's one out there.. (maybe DLee) so why not build around a SF such as Rudy Gay or Joe Johnson? As for the PF situation, possibly consider signing Harrington on the cheap? Thoughts?

He has a $3.2 million player option which he can exercise before June 30. The likelihood is that he will exercise it, although I assume the Nets might like to have that extra cushion when dealing with free agents. Assuming a $53.6 million cap, the Nets have $23.3 million, including two first round picks. Add his $3.2 million and you're at $26.5 million. You're not that far away from the Knicks...and if you have John Wall or Evan Turner in your pocket, you will be more attractive, in my humble opinion.

Humphries' contract guaranteed for another year without player or team option? I think he is as inconsistent as Yi but since Yi is the more liked player by the coaching staff Humphries will be the odd man out.
