I’m OK With Carlos Boozer Becoming A Net

Before the season started if you would have asked me about the one free agent to be I wouldn’t want to see on the Nets, my answer would have been Carlos Boozer.  I thought he was a solid player, but I didn’t really see his game fitting in with the current Nets roster, and I didn’t really think he was a guy worth a max contract.  However, with that being said, the playoffs have really changed my opinion of Boozer.

As you probably know by now, the Nets aren’t in the playoffs, so when I am watching the games I am keeping my eye on soon-to-be free agents.  Some observations have been obvious.  LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Amar’e Stoudemire are all really really good.  Nets fans are going to have to prepare for these three resigning with their current teams (rumors are coming out that all three are planning – or at least going to try -  to do so) and look towards other options.  That is when I started watching (and rewatching) Jazz games and just focusing on Carlos Boozer, and he has been playing like a man during these playoffs.  He has averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds throughout, even as he battles a ribcage injury (he isn’t playing against slouches either).

It wasn’t just the numbers that impressed me either, after watching his play I am really starting to think that Boozer’s style will fit with the Nets.  The Nets really need a power forward with Yi Jianlian and Kris Humphries appearing that they both aren’t the answer (granted they are both nice pieces off of the bench) and Boozer could be the guy.  His time with the Jazz has really made him into a very good pick and roll player, and pairing him with Devin Harris who is a very good point guard when running the pick and roll could lead to some pretty special things.

What about Brook Lopez you ask?  Well, I can come up with two sets the Nets can run with Brook and Boozer in at the same time.  The first would involve Brook and Boozer both at the high post on different sides of Devin Harris.  Harris chooses what screen he wants to use and goes from there.  Both Brook Lopez and Carlos Boozer have a good enough outside game that if they aren’t the screener in this set, they can just spot up for a jumper if their man helps.

All together

1) Devin would choose what screen he wants to use, and here he chooses Brook Lopez. 2) Devin now has three options, he could attack the basket, hit Brook rolling to the basket. 3) Or he can hit the other big man spotting out for the jumper.

The other thing the Nets could do is run a high low set with whichever big man who has the mismatch setting up in the low post.  Both Brook Lopez and Carlos Boozer are good enough passers and shooters to work out of the high post.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, Carlos Boozer would bring a toughness and swagger the Nets don’t currently have (except from a few hard fouls from Kris Humphries every once in a while).  The Nets don’t really have a vocal leader on their team, and while Devin tried this past year, he is more of a lead by example guy.

The Nets have a very good core in place (Brook Lopez, Devin Harris, Terrence Williams, Courtney Lee, and a top 4 pick), but they seem to be missing one key piece.  That piece is a Power Forward, and while I have my sights set on Chris Bosh, my opinion of Carlos Boozer has changed during the Jazz’s playoff run so far this year.  Before the playoffs, if you told me Boozer would be a Net, I would not be happy at all.  Now?  Well, now I can see it working out well for the team.

Just so happens, I "accidentally" had Boozer on one of my fantasy teams. I was definitely surprised at his production week in and week out. He did average a double - double for the season, 19.5 pts and 11.2 rbs. Not bad stats at all. But we all know stats can't tell the whole story, and I can't see Boozer being the elder statesman leader in the Nets locker room. I don't think he would be motivated for the enitre year (still have the disaster of Alonzo Mourning giving me nightmares). Unless, of course, Mike Krzyzewski gives us the biggest shock in the sports world since the 49ers traded Joe Montana and agrees to coach the Nets. (Disclaimer: I am not a fan of Krzyzewski and am not rooting for him to coach the Nets; and I wish he were ready now, but one day I want to see Keyon Dooling coaching the Nets.) Anywho, out of that list of free agents, I think the best chance and the best fit would be Amar'e Stoudemire. Coach? Avery Johnson maybe. Don't think Jeff VG would coach the Nets and turn Knick Nation against him forever.

I like Nicks plan. Nets need to focus on the future and rebuild intelligently. Settling is not the answer.

Think about it, the Nets won 12 games this year. Carlos Boozer and even John Wall would not make this team that much better. If the Nets cannot get Lebron, Wade, Dirk or Bosh (which they wont) then they need to focus on the the draft and fa for other roll players.

If the nets play it smart they can be amazing by 2012. Remember the nets also have the Warriors pick in 2011.

Heres a potential 2011/2012 nets team:

John Wall
Terrence Williams
Carmelo Anthony
Al Horford
Brook Lopez

with Courtney Lee, Stanley Robinson, Enes Kanter (amazing talent), Alexey Shved (russian pg similar to Rubio) coming off the bench.

I don't believe it, the Nuggets have just been really bad this series at defending him (probably due to injuries/lack of coaching, etc.) All he is doing is hanging near the foul line hitting open jumpers, but as seen in Game 5 on several plays when the Nuggets big men (particularly Petro) closed out on him, his catch-and-shoot rhythm was ruined and he started missing. And he can't do crap going off the dribble, and it's well-known about his lack of shot-blocking skills, as well as his injury-proneness.
Plus, going from the best PG in the league right now (DWill) to some slightly above-average injury-prone point guard in Devin Harris will definetely make him less effective as well. W/O DWill, the Jazz would have been swept to pieces in their playoff series, nothing can be attributed to Boozer.

What I don't get is why Bosh is out of the discussion. I know he said he wouldn't come, but that was when we were playing at the Izod for Kiki. He would be a perfect fit if we got pick #1 or #2, and maybe even if we got Favors.
Just what is his deal?

I had mentioned in the post that Bosh is still my number 1 guy, but I think that the Raptors are going to work a sign and trade with someone. Just a personal opinion.

Honestly, if the Nets end up with a cathedral-ceiling PF like either Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins (or a someone like Babbit with their Dallas pick), I wouldn't want them to spend their precious cap space this summer; especially because Harrison Barnes and Perry Jones are looming in next year's draft. I wouldn't mind suffering for another year for either of them (it's no secret that bigs take longer to develop in this league; B. Lo is a freak of nature in that sense). It's all about production per unit dollar; no one said rebuilding would be easy.
My biggest fear is that the Nets overpay someone this year just to be mediocre for the next four-five years. To me, for the Nets to get back on top, they need to acquire one more centerpiece via the draft (after this year's draft), and then focus on free agents. (Portland/OKC rebuilding model) This would also result in a great young core with potentially a star player by the time the Nets get to Brooklyn.

Honestly guys, Rudy Gay, Boozer, and Amar'e were the three guys i would DETEST, but Boozer is better defensively (even if marginally) and actually grabs boards. Only problem is his greediness, sure don't need him around a whole bunch of young guys, but we could do a helluva lot worse (Stoudemire).

Booz like money he goes were he gets paid. I don't like his character but honestly ayntyhing but anotehr year of Yi starting.

nice piece. I think he is the best PF option in the market now as well for us. hes not flashy, but he does what he has to do to win, and we need a star player desperately. and doesn't have a house here too or something?and also i think if he sees the nets roster and the knicks roster he'll do the right thing

no i don't want Boozer, he is old, and too injury-prone. He will be 30 years old by 2012, so HELL NO.

We want to build our young guys, not put in a 30 year old washed up power forward.

Of course Boozer would be good for the Nets.
Let's think bigger.
How about Dirk Novitzski?
Dirk is a free agent this summer too.
He might not want to sign with Dalaas if he loses to the Spurs.
Let's think even bigger
Phil Jackson........

Considering his big, slurpy love letter to Mike D'Antoni, I doubt he'll want to come to a team where they make him play defense. Not that the Nets will definitely have that kind of coach, but I'd rather have that kind of coach than have Boozer.
