Year-In-Review: Yi Jianlian

This offseason is going to be an exciting one for the New Jersey Nets, but before we can move forward we must look back.  Over the next couple of days, I am going to be looking at the Nets who will (most likely) be back, and review their year, from what they did well to what they didn’t.  Today we are going to look at the  Nets’ Most Frustrating  Player, Yi Jianlian.

Yi Jianlian had  a rough start to the year.  After 4 games, Yi was injured and didn’t return until December 23rd (suffering setback after setback during his recovery).  When he came back, there was a new Yi, but as we have seen in the past, he was unable to remain consistant.

The Positives

Quick Decisions

When Yi came back from injury, he just seemed ready to play basketball, and the biggest example of this was his quick decision making.  When Yi struggles, he seems to take forever to make up his mind when deciding what to do with the basketball.  When he goes quick though, he gives the defense no chance to play effective defense on him:

Aggressiveness

Also, when Yi came back he was very aggressive, forcing the action.  Teams were playing him as a spot up shooter, and he was making them pay, big.

The Negatives

Defense

It always seemed that opposing team’s Power Forward would kill the Nets, and the main reason was Yi’s lack of defense.  He just didn’t really have the presence or the know-how on the defensive end most nights.

Here, Yi doesn’t have the strength or the footspeed to stay with a guy like David West. Yi seems to know where he is going, but because he needs to stay and defend the shot, he kind of gives up the drive, and doesn’t have it in him to recover. It isn’t just star players though:

I think this play sums up Yi’s season on the defensive end. Here you have an ok player, but he looks like a superstar when matched up with Yi. Here, the one place Yi can’t let Beasley go is baseline. If Yi forces him middle, Brook is there for the help that way. However, Yi lets him go baseline, Brook can’t get there in time, and Beasley gets the easy bucket.

Yi needs to improve defense and develop a post game

I agree with Gabe. I like Yi but he's got to toughen up like Yao. When Yao came in, he was rlly soft for a Centre and look at him now after he toughened up (excluding the injury lol, im talking about his prescence in the post).
Yi's biggest strength is his ability to shoot and he's got to stay consistent with his jumper. He's got decent speed and athleticism for a 7 footer but he's lacking a lot of gritt, especially on D. NJ's got a decent centre, Lopez and I really don't see him working well with Yi and that has reflected on the Nets "historical" 12 wins.
I would like to see Yi get traded to the Suns or the Knicks with Mike D'Antoni's fast paced offense.
I still remember watching Yi in his first season with the Bucks and he shows many flashes of becoming a greater power forward shooter. I think Yi still has time to turn things around for his career but he's got to put in some heavy sweat this summer and prove that he's just a late bloomer and that he was worth getting picked 6th overall.

Heavy Duty. Farmar and Odom?? Please be kidding. Farmar is a joke. The only reason he is still in the NBA is because he is jewish and good enough for the jew-network to adopt his mediocre services. For instance, yes he could play in NY or Jersey or Florida or California because the jew network is strong there but his skill is lacking and I am an even better athlete.

>

Also, Heavy Duty, Odom is old. Have you watched the playoffs this year? He is not someone the Nets want on their team.

>

The nets could do much better waiting to trade Devin Harris either on draft day (to pacers) for a top 5 pick to go along with Wall (or whoever) or trade Harris after he builds up his value closer to the trade deadline in February to a desperate team thats willing to give the Nets something more worthy than Farmar and Odom. Please. Harris is better than you think.

>

But, back to the article. Yi is soft (He is almost as soft as Farmar). He is very soft. And, yes, he should not be starting. But Yi is also a system guy. If he was put on a team like the suns or jazz and knew his role, and got the ball in the right spot to make a shot he would be more consistent.

I could see him being a less intelligent Rashard Lewis type in a few seasons--and honestly Lewis doesn't do a whole lot. He either shoots a three or pump fakes and drives to the basket. he always gets the ball after the 3, 4, or 5 pass with the shot clock down-- That's a role I see Yi doing well in. A role in which he knew that he HAS to shoot. The Nets were to chaotic all season trying to figure out players strengths and such. They did find out that Yi is probably not the answer at powerforward. But "Heavy duties" suggestion is about 4 years too late. Who wants an OLD Odom along with a terrible athlete in Jordan Farmar (obviously Jews like him--but who else does)?

Yea i understand that we need a pf but my question is y does devin have to be the one traded to get one

As long as Phil Jackson is coaching, Derek Fisher will always start until he just absolutely sucks (which he's not quite there yet, but getting closer). Jackson loves his veterans. Also Shannon Brown isn't that terrible of a player. People might think that he's just a beneficiary of being a Laker and playing against bench player, but he's a decent player in his own right. Jarvis Hayes needs to GO!!! Good thing contract expires. He is more washed up than Fisher is. We just need a PF and I'll blindly hope "Jedi Will"/Courtney Lee and (cringe) CDR to sufficiently man the swingspots.

I dont think harris needs a great swingman just one that is consistent unlike courtney lee or jarvis hayes, he needs guys he can rely on everynight

farmar is awful and odom has one maybe two spectacular moves and nothing else...oh wait harris is useless nevermind make it happen...im kidding but with what harris showed this year all ppl are banking on is his ability to play with a great swing player...honesly i think every pg in the nba would play well with a great swing

Yea Kobe getting 28 mins isnt his fault but he has guys like DEREK FISHER AND SHANNON BROWN getting more minutes than he does, and please explain to me how trading an all star point guard(Devin Harris) for Lamar odom and farmar is good?
And y does devin have to go????????

First off, I'm not an Odom fan, as I tried to establish.

Second, the laker backcourt? Seriously, man? With kobe taking up 38+ minutes a game it's kind of hard to argue that it's purely Farmar's ability that's keeping him back (although again, I would not want him coming to the Nets)

and if you can barely get any playing time in the lakers backcourt that really says something about your ability

WOW THERE U GUYS GO WITH THE LAMAR ODOM AGAIN there is no way in hell LAMAR ODOM and JORDAN FARMAR are worth devin harris.what exactly do u guys see in the nba's most underacheiving player lamar odom???

If we can get another ball-handler (like Wall or Turner even though i think they're terribly overhyped), Odom/Farmar would be acceptable, but Farmar is a throw-in and I have my reservations about Odom. If we lose Devin, everything would be thrust onto "Jedi Will" as a playmaker and Dooling is only a rotation player (as much as it pains me cuz i love him).

I hope you are not saying that Yi's only weakness is on defense....
Yi was a black hole on offense early in the season.
If you passed him the ball you knew he was going to shoot or drive to the basket. That was great in the begining of the season but after awhile teams would wait for him to shoot or draw a charge. His fg percentage is terrible for a "shooter"
Honestly Yi should have taken more 3s to spread the floor but his BBall IQ is his biggest weakness.
Not knowing where you should be when your man goes to double Brook is a big deal on offense.
Not knowing when to rotate on weakside D is an even bigger deal. Many times Brook would try to block a shot and Yis man would end up with a dunk or an easy score.
Yi is very soft. He was stronger than in 08 but still a cupcake inside. Weak hands and thin frame are not assets when you supposed to be reboundingyi can stay on the Nets as long as he is not a starter.
I would like to see Yi and DH traded for Odom and Farmar

On the David West play, Yi was too passive, he let Hayes cut in front of him on D, and West's eyes must have lit up when he saw how off-position Yi was.
