LeBron is Out: Now What?

As if the Boston Celtics haven’t given me enough reasons to despise them over the years – winning all those championships and going from irrelevantĀ  to world-beaters in the course of a few months by importing Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen – the Cs have now done something that may be unforgivable from my viewpoint: they’ve given Knicks fans hope.

The out and out cheerleading for LeBron James from New York Magazine and the Daily News was innocent enough. Frank Isola, before he was openly belittling reporters from Ohio, was telling me to “not take myself so seriously” for mocking the Daily News for their ridiculous pandering to James in October. But now that the Celtics have successfully knocked off the Cleveland Cavaliers with their 94-85 victory last night, I think all Nets fans who are unfortunately immersed in NYC media have to brace themselves for what’s about to happen. If you thought this idea that it’s LeBron’s “destiny” to come to the Knicks was bad before, it’s about to reach intolerable levels.

I have believed all season that LeBron would stick it out in Cleveland, but a lot of that was based on the idea that the Cavs were such a good team, I couldn’t imagine a scenario where they weren’t at least in the Finals this June. The fact that they were knocked out in the Eastern Conference semifinals, against a team that resembled a barely warm corpse a few weeks ago (remember that stunning punch in the mouth you took from Courtney Lee and the Nets in February, Celtics fans? I’m not letting you forget, yet) may change things up a bit. I’ve maintained that LeBron goes where he has the best chance to win it all. If that team they built up in Cleveland this season can’t even get past the second round, then I have to wonder if that franchise is ever going to put the pieces together, especially as they become more financially limited with LeBron holding a max contract.

With that said, I still think it would be beyond ridiculous to assume that if LeBron leaves Cleveland, it’s only to come to the Knicks. Notice how I don’t write “New York” there. Because while Frank Isola, Will Leitch and their gang of cheerleaders may think that New York only means the Garden, I think Daniel Goldstein and his $3 million buyout will tell you that the Nets and Brooklyn are very much a reality and if LeBron and his agent don’t think they can’t make their “billion” playing two years in a major city 10 minutes outside of NY before spending the rest of their remaining years in NYC’s best borough (and I say this as a newly minted Brooklyn resident), then they’re nuts. However, I would be remiss in mentioning teams like Chicago, Sacramento, the Clippers and Miami, who will have the same ability as the Knicks and the Nets to sign LeBron or another max guy this summer. But don’t expect Frank Isola to let those facts to get in the way of a good photoshop contest, or an exclusive interview with Lenny the cab driver, who “knows” LeBron is coming here to win championships with Eddy Curry and the cock, Rooster, Danilo Gallinari. Because those guys are superior components when compared to Shaq, Antawn Jamison, and Mo Williams.

Not to spam your comments but I wrote about the NYC media's disgusting LeBron coverage on my own (little) blog a few days ago after Game 5 of the Celtics-Cavaliers series if anyone wants to give it a read. It's gotten to sickening heights.

Do with the link what you will: http://couchsideseats.wordpress.com/2010/05/13/the...

Mix NYC, Jay-Z, Proky, and LeBron and you'll see kids from Shanghai to Budapest wearing Nets gear.

king wants to win...good advice to him:don't go to the worst franchise in the nba(clippers)or together with a team that has only four losers still on the team(knicks). He should go to the brooklyn nets and turn the franchise around by winning 3 championships in the next 6 years!

@ Mark
I don't "want" Lebron either. I want DWade or Melo in 2011. Calipari is not an NBA coach.
@ Mike
Lebron was saying his management team has a plan for the summer
@ All
I think Lebron's reputation has been soiled with his play and comment in these playoffs. Its not all his fault the Cavs lost but he was not graceful in defeat.
How many superstars get to play in their home city?
Especially in Basketball. You can't embarass your city like that even if its Cleveland.
That's why DWade would be the perfect fit in Chicago. He has class and he gives 100% everynight, just like Jordan. MJ officially made Wade the face of Jordan BBall not Lebron.
@ Erik
I proposed a similar trade for NJ and Toronto. Toronto has the largest chinese population in NAmerica. Yi DH Hump for Bosh.
This is my free agent proposition.
Prokhorov sets up meetings with all the big free agents and top tier coaches, get them all in1 room on his yacht with 45 million cash. 30 mill for 2 all stars and 15 for a coach. whoever signs first gets the biggest signing bonus

@ Erik, I'm sorry, I think I misread your post. Are you thinking about getting around the cap space so that the Nets could sign two max players, Bosh and LeBron?.

I don't no if that could work. Maybe someone else could answer that for you.

@ Erik; Why give up assets for a "FREE AGENT"? Plus if that free agent does not want to play for you, your screwed. I guess if all parties involved agreed to it for whatever reasons it could be arranged. But if Bosh wanted to play for the Nets all he has to do is say no to any trades involving other teams. Why, if I'm the Nets, would I give Toronto Harris and Yi? Financial reasons? P.S. You must be pretty pumped about the Celtics. Good luck..

I think the best way to get Lebron is to just ask him who he wants as head coach of the Nets. Whoever Lebron wants as head coach, he gets. Prokhorov can throw an absurd amount of money at the coach Lebron wants so that we can get him on our team.

Sorry, not a Nets fan (actually a Celtics fan, my apologies). But I've gotten this idea in my head that the Nets are the best place for LeBron and I can't shake it. My question is, can they do a sign-and-trade for Bosh AND get LeBron or would that go against the cap rules? Let's say Devin Harris and Yi for Bosh (not sure if that works, but stick with me). That might be the best deal Toronto gets.

LeBron, Bosh, Lopez, Wall/Turner, CLee in Brooklyn with an owner with deep pockets and Jay-Z thrown in? I feel like I'm missing something - why isn't this a possibility?

Sounds like Mike Brown will be fired in 7-10 days. Dan Gilbert owner of the Cav's just greased the skids in a press conference a short time ago.

Nets will get LeBron if he decides to bolt the Cav's. Why? Because it makes the most sense for all involved.

The Nets are sneakily pulling a Tampa Bay Rays. Everyone's doggin us for almost breakin the worst record in basketball, but have we got them fooled ;) Just building for the future and LeBron. Nets HAVE to be the favorite. Our roster has more potential/younger than the Bulls.

And the Knicks (with no foreseeable 1st round draft picks or long-term talent) shouldn't even bear mentioning

The Kings?! Why would he go to the super-stacked West? and the Kings?! with ball-hoggin' Evans? Very unlikely.

As for Cleveland, as a sports fan I hope he pulls a Joe Mauer and stays with Cleveland as a hometown hero, but he's given them more than enough time and their roster is in complete shambles with no future potential.

@Mark, it sounds like your not to high on Coach Cal. How about Rick Pitino? The Nets will have to spend big bucks on their new head coach simply because Proky will want to make a big splash. There's "No business like show-off business".

@DJ HeavyDuty;

What "team" was LeBron eluding too? The Cav's...? or LeBron, his agent and business associates?

When the Cav's fire Mike Brown will they then hire coach Cal?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Somebody fill me in. Thanks..

@DJ

Wojanrowski said it best this morning. Calipari is the ultimate egoist, which is a main reason why I thought he was such a disgrace with the Nets in the 90s, and a large reason why I believe he will continue to fail as an NBA coach. If the two of them are really conspiring here, then they truly deserve each other and let me go on record in saying I DONT want LeBron if it means importing that self-centered buffoon in Calipari.

Its seems like whatever team lands a championship coach will get Lebron. Coaching has been the equalizer in the playoffs. Boston, and Utah upset championship caliber teams in the playoffs.
Funny how Calipari has been to Lebrons playoff games even sitting next to Lebrons agent.
Could they be planning to hold some team hostage?
Calipari has not won anything but him and Lebron have a relationshp.
After last nights game Lebron said his "team has a plan and they are going to execute it"
Sounds like there has been a plan for this summer.
The Nets have an advantage over most teams.
Deep pockets, young team, draft picks and new stadiums are something the Knicks, Bulls, or Cleveland don't have.

If LeBron wants to win, he should go to the Nets. They have the pieces in place to get 2 max, lopez and harris is on the roster and have the choice of Turner or Wall in most scenarios.

C Lopez
F David Lee?
F Lebron
G Turner
G Harris

I like

If LeBron leaves Cleveland, the Nets should be favorites to land him. He could have a team all his own with the "Brooklyn Nets". Why play in the shadow of Michael Jordan in Chicago, or join the old and broken down Knicks.

LeBron could be the Babe Ruth of NY Nets basketball. Get in on the ground floor and enjoy the ride up to the stars... Wishing on a star!

The other bottom line in all this is LeBron won't win in NY the way they're currently constructed. He makes them a bottom seed in the East, which means he joins a team with a weak supporting cast that's perpetually making low-impact draft picks - sound familiar?

As much as the last two seasons have killed me, the Nets are doing this the right way - and the Bulls are even more ahead of the game, because they got lucky in the lottery a few years ago and have maturing pieces in place, as opposed to the Nets who still may be a year or two away from players playing like the stars they seem poised to become.

Cleveland, Nets, Bulls, Miami there the teams I think he'll probably consider. Clippers not a chance. He probably resigns with Cleveland. If he joins the knicks psft. Kincks suck!

If the "chosen one" wants to win:
bulls
nets
maybe sacremento/ Cleveland

if he is in it for mula:
knicks

Lol let the Knicks become Bronny Bron's little team, it's not like they'll do any better then Cleveland anyways.

I'm a Bulls fan, and this post made me realize the unique ability Nets fans have to cut down the Knicks. I can say the Knicks suck all I want, but I don't have the over-exposure to NYC media to hone the sarcastic bitterness that is necessary to handle a fanbase with such an air of entitlement. Good post.
