Coaching Candidate Number Three: Jeff Van Gundy

After my two esteemed colleagues discussed the potential of Mike Kryzamalamadingdong and Tom Thibodeau, now comes my chance to look at a guy who could also very realistically be manning the sidelines for our New Jersey Nets next season: Sir Jeff Van Gundy. JVG, who spends most of his time these days having Super Soaker Wars in Mark Jackson’s backyard (Mike Breen is not invited), spends his nights doing color commentary for TNT. While he seems perfectly content with his job, the lure of coaching remains over his head, and there are a few reasons why he might return to the sidelines.

First, I think we can all be sure that he hasn’t slept with Gloria James. So that’s one point in his favor.

Yes, Nets fans. In case we forgot, our favorite sad-puppy lookalike is actually a pretty good coach. While he hasn’t taken the helm of an NBA team in three years, Van Gundy has been on the NBA sidelines as an assistant coach, head coach, and commentator for literally as long as I’ve been alive. Seriously. JVG accepted the position of Knicks assistant on July 28, 1989. I was born the next day. Along with his assistant chops, JVG boasts a decade of NBA coaching experience. As a head coach, JVG led the Knicks to the playoffs six times in the 90s and 00s, including that wild lockout season when they made it to the Finals against the Spurs. (Side note: I attended game one of that series back when I was a pre-pubescent Knicks fan. I attest to this day that I was the loudest fan in the place, and the people within ten rows of me both ways would agree, too.) He’s known as a solid x’s and o’s guy, is well-known and respected throughout the league, and has a solid ability to communicate with players.

Unlike Coach K, he’s shown that he has a style that can succeed at the NBA level. Unlike Thibodeau, he’s shown he can take the lead reins of an NBA team and sustain his success. Unlike high-profile candidates such as Phil Jackson or John Calipari, he’s accessible and won’t demand the universe. He also spends a fair amount of time in this clip complimenting the Nets. While he doesn’t explicitly say anything about looking for a coaching job, he says he has a lot of respect for Prokhorov, calls Rod Thorn “as good as it gets” and that “any coach that’s interested in coaching would be interested in that job.” If JVG is interested in coaching – and I think he is – he’s someone we will have to take a look at.

Ideally, I don’t think JVG is the top choice for the job, but if the lottery proved anything, it’s that we don’t live in an ideal world. It’s clear that JVG is not a sexy pick. While that sounds bad, I do think it’s actually a point in his favor; the season will then be about the players, and not about the coach. He can get his job done and make sure that any FA we get, Brook Lopez, Devin Harris, and (sigh) our #3 pick are the stars of the show.  I do have faith in his ability to lead a team, however; he’s done it before, and with the right crew I’m confident he can do it again.

Yi+#3+#27+the option to switch next year's first rounder for #1. Come on, Washington! Bite on it! You won't get another deal this good!

(Yes, I know they have Andray Blatche. I'm still in the bargaining stage of the 5 levels of grief. Give it time. I'll stop soon.)

Personally I was hoping to fill a hole in the starting line up with our draft pick toasters. Whats clear though now if that we are drafting a power forward, we need to dump Hump or Yi. At this stage I wouldn't have a problem trading Yi for a draft pick (a bad one) if somone would even bite at that...

Firstly, the lottery needs to be redone, i.e., not happen. After this whole year, we looked forward to John Wall and now #3, not even Turner. Life as a Net Fan I guess.

In my former life as a Knicks fan, JVG knew how to coach, then he just bailed (well i did 2), and the knicks are the only team that I ever bailed on, but that was 10 years ago and I'm a Net Fan lifer now.

But I don't think JVG or Mark Jackson is the answer. Coach K would have been ideal, but he's got a sweet gig at Duke. Maybe a coach from the international game might be the answer.

As bad as it is not to get John Wall, I'm actually relieved for Devin Harris. His contract is a bargain for his talent, and with a great coach, he'll get back to all-star form. We're not getting the big name player in the draft but filling a NEEDED hole at PF instead. I still think that if we could get Amare or DLee, Favors would make it a solid 3-Big man rotation for years to come. Sorry Yi, you're the odd man out.

Devin/Shea-- I think we go for a FA PF anyway. Otherwise, we have only 2 competent bigs, and one will be 19 years old. Get Boozer (or whoever) and let Favors play 20-25 minutes a night backing up both the 4 and 5. This way he's not under a lot of pressure and can adapt to the pro game better. Otherwise we'll have to play Favors alongside Boone at regular intervals, and scoring will stop at those times.

@Sam I am, as I hope everyone else is, excited at the potential of Derrick Favors. I think he could legitimately go down as a top-15 PF of all time. His ceiling is that high. The only issue now is that with taking our future PF in the draft, that shuts the door on a fair amount of the free agent class (Amare/Boozer/DLee, etc), and if Favors doesn't pan out... Of course, if we get LeBron James this will have been an A+ offseason regardless of how awful the ping pong balls fell yesterday, but Wall was (in my opinion) a big piece of the LBJ puzzle...

I don't know. I'm still reeling, really.

Can't wait, Devin! I think this whole situation is a blessing in disguise: a dominant PF is the key to having a championship team (Garnett, Gasol, Duncan), and Favors has the ability to be on that level.

Add Carmelo Anthony to that mix next summer and .. I have to go change my pants

JVG is a good an option as any and yeah anything that means Mark Jackson talks less is a good thing.

Looking forward to it. You promised an all star off season after all and it looks like your we aren't getting a better option after all.

Personally I'm bumbed we didn't get top 2 honestly I wouldn't have a problem at all if we had 2 right now. Yeah I'd like wall but I've watched enough Evan Turner to know he's going to be great. What I also really liked about getting wall or turner was that it made our free agnecy plan clear. We were going to get a talented wing and our first priority was PF the easiet hole to fill. Now though we don't know where the heck to go :(

Adam/CAT/Everyone else still reeling from last night: My first in a series of mock drafts should be going up shortly.

maybe there is still a chance we get turner? they say he is kind of like iguodala 2.0 anyway...i'd take turner, but be very happy with favors (this means no more yi!) harris-lee-terrence-favors-lopez and thats without whatever free agent we bring in

"Van Gundy has been on the NBA sidelines as an assistant coach, head coach, and commentator for literally as long as I’ve been alive."

You know whose NBA career started when I was born? Elgin Baylor. Ouch.

@cat From your written word to the basketball gods' eyes.

Dennis-- Favors won't need a go-to move, just stand 8 feet from the basket and wait for LeBron to dish it off the drive!

On Favors, the kid is ridiculously athletic with a huge wingspan. He's a great finisher on the break with great defensive instincts. HOWEVER, he needs to work on a go-to move in the NBA. He's not really there yet offensively, but if he can work on his dribble, develop a hook, recognize the double-team and find the open man, this kid could be AWESOME!

PLUG ALERT!!! Look out for Devin's Mock Draft, which will pub in an hour or so from now. You can learn more about Favors and other draft prospects then!

It's like jumping out of a plane before it crashed. You can't blame him for that. Please don't get me started on Jame Dolan. Speaking of Mark Jackson, I think he's on Thorn's Top 5 list.

Yeah, I think JVG would make an excellent choice for all of the reasons you said. However, do you think there's any stigma on him basically quitting on his team (the Knicks) mid-season in 2001? I guess that's so long ago, none of the current players would even remember to care. Anyway, always thought JVG got the shaft when he was fired from the Rockets... it would be good to see him strolling the sidelines again... although I'd miss the broadcasting banter between he and Mark Jackson.

Van Gundy would be great. Another quick jab @ the Knicks to take away more fans. I think we will be OK with the #3 pick, I would be devasted if we would have won nothing and fell to 4. At least WE have the choice between which big man we want and now that I'm scouting Favors, I'm OK with him. By the time we hit Brooklyn, Favors will be a PF every team would love to have.
