Bringing Back Chris Douglas-Roberts A Tough Decision For The Nets

Chris Douglas-Roberts is a tremendous talent, there is no denying that.  If the decision to pick up Chris Douglas-Roberts (the team has to execute an option on the final year for CDR’s 3 year deal by June 30th) was purely as basketball one, the Nets would do it in a heartbeat.  He would be making under a million dollars and for a team looking to spend a ton of money in Free Agency, CDR is a huge bargain.

With all of the headaches that he causes off the court, however, the Nets may end up deciding that he isn’t worth the $854,389 he is due to make next season.

Last year was an interesting one for CDR.  It started at summer league, where he played very well at the 2-guard position.  That lead many people (including myself) to say he should come off the bench, instead of playing at SF.  However, he proved all the “haters” wrong right off the bat, averaging nearly 20 points a game during the first two months of the season.  He was being mentioned as an early candidate for the Most Improved Player award, and rightfully so.

After those first two months, there were some changes in Nets-land that really effected CDR’s season.  Everybody started coming back from injuries (the Nets were decimated with injuries during the early part of the season), and Kiki was forced to take over as head coach of the Nets.  These two events lead to less touches/minutes for CDR, and he did not react well to the situation.  His blunt post game press conferences, ones that when he was playing well made him sound like the vocal leader, now consisted of him complaining about a “new system” and wondering out why guys like Courtney Lee are getting sets run for them, while he has to work for his own shot.  Instead of going out there and proving that he deserves the touches, CDR went out and did the exact opposite, he stopped being aggressive and stopped looking for his own shot.  Whether this was on purpose or not, I don’t know, but it got CDR in Kiki’s doghouse and he was never able to get out of it.

So why does last year matter?  Kiki has been shown the door, there is going to be a brand new roster, and this is going to be a much better Nets team than last year.  Well, despite all of that CDR might find himself in the same position as last year all over again.  Think about it, the Nets already have Courtney Lee and Terrence Williams to play the wing positions on their roster.  Even if they don’t get LeBron, they are more than likely going to bring in another All-Star (or at least starting) quality wing in Joe Johnson, Rudy Gay, or someone else.  T-Will showed at the end of the year last year, that he can play quality basketball at any one of three positions, so he will probably be the starting SG next to whatever free agent SF that is brought in, pushing Courtney Lee to the bench as the 6th man.  CDR?  He would be the second wing (not second player) off the bench.  At a salary of $854,389, why not bring him on to be a Jamal Crawford type off the bench though right?  Again, this is a simple basketball decision, but a tough decision all things considered.  If CDR doesn’t get the minutes he deems necessary for himself, you already know what is going to happen, we saw it this past year.  There are going to be the post game interviews in which he tells reporters he doesn’t know why he isn’t getting the minutes/touches he thinks he deserves, then you are going to get the strange post game tweets in which he isn’t really complaining, but he is.

In the end, my guess is that the Nets decide that CDR isn’t worth the headache (and I agree) and they don’t pick up the option on him.  When that happens, teams really needing a scoring punch are going to be fighting each other to sign Douglas-Roberts on the cheap.  In the right situation, he is going to play really well.  When he does, there is no doubt in my mind that he will let Nets’ fans know all about it.

From someone who watched this kid for 3 years at Memphis. It amazes me when I see comments of this kid having an attitude and disrepect. This kid just has a strong will to win. His college coach (Calipari) said that he has a will unlike anyone he has ever coached. If you give this guy a real coach and show some confidence in him. He will be a steal for his projected salary. CDR is not a bad guy, true he needs to mature and keep some of his comments to himself. But he is not the cancer that he is being made out to be.

Sign him! He can be packaged in a sign and trade this summer if he doesn't show interest.

He is an asset. Sign him.

CDR was by far the Nets best perimeter scorer under Lawrence Frank. This should be an easy decision for the Nets to retain a guy like him. I think that he has proven that. C. Lee should be the guy that the Nets look to shop while he has value and bring in another inexpensive shooter. If the Nets don't retain him, they are a bunch of jokes! Look for CDR to get a nice contract after this year and be one of the leagues best yound talents!

he's cheap, he walks the floor awkwardly, and has a weird shot...that all makes it a resign. but seriously he's really cheap by NBA standards, and if we need to trade him so be it, and if he's still really immature during the season, send him to the D-league and show him how those guys bust their hump.

CDR is a great ball player and with an excellent competitive mentality. He is a winner and that is what he wants. If the nets were winning I don't think he would mind coming off the bench, but with his competitive nature he becomes increasingly frustrated when he feels he isn't being able to do anything to help. That is an important attitude on a winning team, he could be that x factor that pushes us in the play offs.Look at how deep Phoenix has gone into its bench. For his price you have to take it into consideration for another year, one year contract cant do harm and in my least favorite situation could be bought out.

I don't see how there won't be PT for CDR. And please don't mention LBJ or JJ, ce they ain't coming here, point blank.

There are 4 wing spots in the rotation. We have TWill, Lee and CDR. TWill will get some spot minutes at the 1 too, so there's more PT left at the wings when he's used as a back up PG.

Even if we add a fa like say Rudy Gay (I dont like him, but), CDR will get his minutes.

Also, don't forget CDR earned a STARTING role when we had a REAL coach in place, while Courtney Lee was even benched by Frank before he was fired. CDR is a hard worker and is used to be the underdog. I guarantee you he will EARN his pt.

There's zero reason not to pick up his option.

CDR's slashing style requires the ball in his hands. We also have TWill and Devin who also need the ball to be effective and are better players than CDR. An added FA puts him in a situation where he will have to fight for playing time even as a backup. Does he have it in him to remake his game, to work on his defense and outside shot to make himself useful within the team concept? Or will it just be gimme ball?

and fro, there is no way the sixers would do that unless we include one of our later picks.

why don't we pick up his option and trade him? we could trade him for at least a 2nd round pick or we could end up doing a sign and trade for a player.. (bosh, stoudamire, gay, james)

Can we trade him with the #3 to secure the #2 pick from the Sixers?

For a guy who is allegedly expendable for the Nets, CDR sure gets a lot of press on this site. (Mostly negative about how he is such a "headache" for the Nets organization.)

As a CDR fan, I surely hope your speculation is correct and that CDR ia freed up from the weight of being unjustly pegged as someone other than the dedicated baller he has always been. I agree that other teams would welcome his skills.

Careful what you ask for, you just might get it.

you have to kepp the guy at that price. if he complains then trade him or if it gets really bad just release him.
but i think he had a point when he was complaining about y C.Lee gots sets ran for him and he didnt. CDR is a scorer that should get plays ran for him especially on our 12 win team. C. lee is just a spot up shooter( in my opinion. and he had such a good start to the season. if u think about the beginning of the season only Brook and CDR were playin well. when hes aggressive hes definetely worth it and i think he can still be a good scorer off the bench. just like sebastian wrote in the beginning of the year.

As with most, I think the Nets should take CDR's option, if anything as a trade chip... he's more than worth that "paltry" sum of money and teams would want that value should a trade go down. I also think that a winning environment does wonders for players to just shut up and play. Great work and points, but obviously, I think the Nets should bring CDR back.

CDR will respect a head coach who deserves. He realized Kiki is a buffoon and he said that. Everyone was asking for a leader on this team, and CDR was that leader until Kiki took over.

The Nets have to re sign CDR. There may be sign and trade opportunities and the Nets have very few contracts to deal. CDR is a steal at his current price and some other team like Memphis would love to take him.
CDR got a bad rap this past year due to his own actions and bad team management.

Media attention? I don't know any non-Net fan who knows CDR even gets interviewed. No one cares about his complaining but Net fans. I think if you want to drop CDR, it has to be a purely basketball decision. I love CDR but he's definitely replaceable if we upgrade our SF. He's not a great defender nor a great shooter. Personally, I'd like to have atleast two shooters in our wing rotation so we can balance our lineup. I don't think CDR and TWill can play together for long stretches. If we sign a wing who's more of a creator, I'd be okay with replacing CDR with a shooter.

Ok the nets lacked star power, had a bad season and CDR was avaiable. I dont see him getting as much media attention next year on this team so less chance to complain. I know he loves twitter but like eveyone else said with star power and a real coach (Aj maybe he could be fine. Also he was fine his rookie year meh.

Really? So you mean if CDR decides to not listen to veterans on a 12 win team, he won't ever change? Look at CDR's rookie season... He really didn't get much of a chance to play at all until the final month, but he never complained. Why? my guess is because the team was actually reasonably competitive!

The fact is, you have no idea how CDR will react if the team is winning. Yes, he complained when the team was terrible and he had a reduced role. But if his role is reduced and the team is doing well, he would probably be complaining a lot less. And above all, you are not going to get better value for your money, and that is most important. As gizzy said, he would be a great trade piece

I want to see how he does with a real head coach. I don't think he really had much respect for Kiki, but Kiki was terrible so I don't really blame him. Sometimes it takes guys a little bit longer to mature. Once he takes some time this offseason to step away from the game and evaluate his season, he might come in with a different attitude next year. Get a winning environment going with the Nets and have a real head coach, and he might be more open to that back up role. If things don't work out this year, then no worries since they weren't really paying him that much anyway. As gizzy said, they could always just include him in a trade too.

sign him..you can always inc him in a trade

bad move... bring in a real veteran and he will shut up... dont waste the talent!

Despite not being great talents, Tony Battie, Trenton Hassell, and Jarvis Hayes are some of the best professionals in the NBA. If they can't get through to CDR, I don't think anyone will.

Sebastian, I think you hit a bulls eye. Bingo, game, set and match. Nice summation of the CDR Nets era.

I also agree with your final verdict on CDR's final faith.

And yes, he will come back to haunt us. They all do... LOL
