Daily Link: Chris Paul on Nets Radar?

Last week I assumed, barring something unforeseen, that Devin Harris was the Nets PG in the 2010-11 season. Well, Sam Smith is speculating something unforeseen. He believes the Nets are going to use their #3 pick in an attempt to trade for New Orleans PG Chris Paul.

The thinking goes like this: You get Paul and can play Devin Harris at shooting guard. Harris isn’t a great three-point shooter, though he has had decent seasons at 34 percent. But he is more a scoring guard than point guard. Plus, the way the game is played these days, it is useful to have a shooting guard who can handle the ball and make plays as opposed to just spotting up. The other, perhaps more likely, possibility is a sign-and-trade with the Hawks of Harris for Joe Johnson.

When healthy, Chris Paul is arguably the best point guard in the NBA – a player who can score, shoot, pass and play defense. However, Paul is also coming off an injury ravaged season where he only played in 45 games. He’s two years from free agency as well, which could play a role in disrupting Mikhail Prokhorov’s five-year plan.

Personally, I’m more excited to hear that this kind of speculation is out there, though I’m not sure what I think of Paul in a Nets uniform as of yet. It sounds like the Nets brass are ultimately unimpressed with what’s going to be available with their draft pick. I also think there’s some reality setting in that most of the big name free agents are either going to stay where they are or avoid the Nets.

I just graduated Medical School, and am a huge Nets fan. To answer your questions on the surgery, I will tell you what I learned during my Orthopedic rotation.

The there are 2 meniscus in your knees; one on the inside, and one on the outside. It's cartilage, and like the article says allows for shock absorption so that the 2 bones don't rub up on each other.

I am assuming that Chris only removes 1 of these 2 meniscus, which mitigates the situation slightly.

The bottom line, to the best of my knowledge is, there should be no IMMEDIATE problems with Chris. Degenerative Arthritis is something that takes years to develop. Granted, in the basketball world it can happen much quicker, but not for a few years. By then, Chris will probably need Microfracture Surgery.

Microfracture Surgery is basically breaking little parts of the bones in the knee to encourage cartilage (meniscus) growth. In a few years, I'm guessing the he will begin to have problems in that knee and microfracture will be required.

Now, enough from my medical opinion. As a Nets fan I tell you this:

CP3 is the best PG in the league; easily. He won't be having problems with the knee right away, and in a couple of years if he does, his contract expires.

Therefor, I leave you with this:

The #3 pick is not worth the risk of renting a player for 2 years UNLESS you are "1 piece away" from a championship; which clearly we are not.

If New Orleans is as broke as we keep hearing, I would offer a package for Okafor and Paul. It would probably require a third team since they would have minimal interest in Harris since they already have Collison.

Perhaps the Blazers can get Harris and Humphries from the Nets, while giving up Fernandez, Bayless, Pryzbillas expiring contract, and a 2011 1st Rounder. Nets throw in Yi, the #27, a 2011 1st rounder, and $3 million in cash while taking on the contracts of Okafor and Paul.

New Orleans gets INSTANT cap relief, 2 good young players, a rookie, some cash, and 2 future draft picks. The Blazers get their point guard (they've liked Harris for a long long time), and a servicable bigman to compensate for the Pryzbilla loss.

The Nets look like this end up with Lopez, Okafor, and Favors/Cousin in the front court (and probably the 31st pick will be a big man as well).. and Paul, Lee, CDR, and Williams in the back court. 8 good, solid, young players, AND.. exactly 17 million under the cap. Just enough for Lebron.

I should have dropped out of medical school and become a GM.

Now we want to trade Brook and our #3? When does the madness end? LOL

That's rough. Hard to trade Brook Lopez. He is a franchise center. Wow that must be a good trade because I don't know how I feel about it.

The Hornets would not even consider this trade unless Brook Lopez is involved and the Nets take on a contract.

Thus being,

CP3 and Emeka Okafor
for
#3 and Brook Lopez

Thoughts?

Also, that article seems mostly focused on microfracture surgery, is this meniscus thing the same thing?

Yeah, thanks Devin, the thing is that I read that when Bill Simmons wrote it, and I do actually like to read Simmons' stuff...but are we REALLY gonna trust Simmons on this one? He's the guy who prides himself on having no inside knowledge of the league or it's players. His thing is that he LOVES basketball, but is really "just a fan" like us. I have a feeling that although it sounds bad, I can't imagine a player doing something like that to return to a non playoff team

@Adam I suggest this article: http://www.basketballprospectus.com/article.php?ar...
Key quote (as quoted by Bill Simmons): "One reason teams are so quick to allow this surgery is that the players come back so quickly, usually in a matter of weeks. But … surgeons don't repair the meniscus in most cases; they just take it out, either in part or in whole depending on the size of the tearing. That leaves the athlete with no shock. Eventually, with the remaining meniscus overstressed and aging, they end up with the bones grinding together. Yes, that's as bad as it sounds in a game of running and jumping."

Does anyone here actually know about injuries or are we all just speculating because bone on bone sounds bad? I'm saying this as someone who knows nothing. But it makes no sense that CP3 would get a surgery to try to come back quicker in a year that he knew his team wasn't good, ESPECIALLY if it in any way impacted his career negatively.

A risky surgery to come back to a team that wasn't playoff bound? No way. I'm sure this meniscus thing isn't as bad as it sounds. I'll take CP3 thank you.

Ummm I'm good, take a healthy 18 year old with a load of potential, Chris Paul injury has left him with bone on bone, that is not good to say the least, I wouldn't give up our future for a question mark in terms of his health, his injury was serious, he got the quick surgery to come back early but could cost him his career.

Wait, Mike is Rock? That sort of makes sense....

Yeah C Paul went 4 but I'll take a guarinteed best PG in the league over a draft pick thats viewed over a project any day. Like I said this doesn't happen, but on the issue of trading for other teams player. How do we get J Kidd? That worked out pretty well for us. Why would the hornets do it? The franchise is cutting costs, getting sold. They have a sold option at PG right now and at this point they don't have a hope of contedning for anything maybe not even in the playofffs in the west were eight teams won 50 games so CP3's contract and talent are a big waste there and cost them money. They're rebuilding. But yeah it doesn't make that much sense hence why it won't happen. As for his knee injury people are way to paranoid about that.

How about cdr for Marcus thorton?

No DH is more than capable and knee injuries scare me.

You have to understand, I love Chris Paul - love, love, love his game. If the NBA held a fantasy draft, I'd take him fourth behind only LeBron, Howard, & Durant. That being said, his knee problems are very, very scary. They've removed the meniscus completely, which means that the bone is just grinding on bone. For a PG who relies on quickness, that could potentially be a killer.

If the Nets could get a package that relies on not giving up the third pick or Brook, they should probably consider it. But his injury & his subpar (for him) return this year has me very wary. I hope the Nets are wary too.

Not gonna happen.
The Nets don't have enough signed players to make a trade work for CP3

P.S. Wasn't Chris Paul drafted #4 in 2005. Yeah... these superstars do come from somewhere... the DRAFT!

Here we go again...
Nets fans are never satisfied.
We have the #3 pick, with some great young talent just waiting to be plucked, but Nets fans want to trade it away for some other teams superstar. If we don't like the #3 pick why would the Hornets want it? Why would the Hornets also want Harris? Makes no sense unless the Nets want to pay thru the nose for CP3.

Not sure the Hornets make the deal unless we take back more bad contracts.....but CP3 is defintely worth the #3 pick and Harris.

No way do the Hornets trade Chris Paul for just the #3 pick. Paul = best PG in the NBA, top 3 player in the NBA (when healthy), if he is on the market at all someone else will undoubtedly offer up a more appealing package.

+1

Paul is everything this team lacked leadership wise last year too and we would do some real damage with B Lopez considiering how he worked with Chandler etc. Even though this doesn't happen does it remind anyone else of a little trade that happened nine years ago for the best PG in the league at the time. I get quivers just thinkingh about it.

Wow... CP3 in a Nets uni? I think New Orleans is okay doing this because they're not going to contend any time soon, especially in the West and Darren Collison was simply awesome when he filled in for Paul. Still, there should be some degree of concern about Paul's injury record. But, I'd do this in a millisecond.

Talk about ridiculous upside... if Paul comes back,he's not just the best PG in the league, he's one of the 3 best players. He's already better than the optimistic projections for Derrick Favors. NO must think his knees are shot, though. I say we do it anyway, then trade Devin for a PF if we don't get one in free agency.

I think this is where the teasing goes too far...it's one thing to get our hopes up about LeBron, but now Chris Paul too?! My fan heart can't take anymore false hope and disappointment....
