Breaking: Avery Johnson/Nets Reach Verbal Agreement

ESPN’s Marc Stein is reporting that the Nets and Avery Johnson have reached a “verbal agreement” for Johnson to become the new head coach of the Nets.

I think this is the right move for the organization and if this remains true, the timing is good, because I would have hated to see him go to Atlanta as had been rumored.

Read some of Sebastian’s thoughts/analysis on Johnson here.

Avery is an good x's and o's guy that believes in playing inside out, crashing the defensive boards, and generally calling out plays on the fly for his point guard to run. He did this with Devin Harris in Dallas, rarely letting him control the offense. He loosened up somewhat when Jason Kidd arrived, but there were many rumors and stories circulating regarding tension existing between Kidd and Avery, due to Avery's tendency to make calls from the bench despite having a proven leader on the court like Kidd. Also, Avery's regular season record is ridiculous, something like 70 or 75 percent, but his playoff record is pretty bad. This could suggest a weakness regarding the game by game adjustments necessary for playoff success, and is probably the largest negative looming over his head right now.

And what type of system does he run?

Is he a good X and Os guy?

the one thing I look forward to is the press confernces, his voice is so soothing

I'm ecstatic that we didn't settle for Mark Jackson, but I'm also worried about him suffocating Devin on offense.

I don't think it has any indication on their draft but you might aruge they obvious since the CP3 rumors are obviously rubbish. That Devo is the PG going forward. Anyway Avery was my favourite candidate so I'm happy.

Big day for the Nets.
I wonder if the verbal agreement is: You got the job if Phil dont want it!

i think its a very solid choice. good coach who wants to play Defense. and he obviously knows Devin Harris. how much money is he getting paid? nothhing rediculous i guess.

Well AJ can't do worse than this season, but if the Nets are bad again next year, AJ's yelling and bitching is going to wear thin fast. Brooke looked close to a couple of mental breakdowns this year, AJ may sap the last bid of life out of him this year.
At least he's better than hiring Mark Jackson. (disclosure, I wanted JVG)

Wow, congrats to the Nets. Avery is a great coach who spent time learning from Nellie and Pop, two great minds that couldn't be farther apart ideologically. You guys will soon learn why he's known as the little general. What you'll get from him is a clear agenda on the court, accountability, and demand for effort on the defensive end. As a Spurs fan, I've seen the Mavs quite frequently over the years, but when Avery was at the helm, they had a completely different psychological makeup. I mean, Dirk was not only defending like never before, but was posting up on the block for Christ's sake. Devin Harris, an unknown to most of the Spurs fan base, became a beast that routinely torched Tony Parker. It was incredible. They just seemed to exhibit on the court a product that's only possible with the leadership of a confident coach. I hope Avery and the Nets find a similar kind of success this coming season.

I think Nets fans have been spoiled over the past several seasons for having as close to a player-coach and leader as you can have in Jason Kidd (and last year, to an extent, VC). Because of this, the Nets were able to get away with L-Frank as a coach, because L-Frank was never really a domineering presence. The lack of a strong leadership presence in the bench was really exposed last season though.

Avery is the perfect fit. He will bring defensive tenacity, fundamentals, and toughness. More importantly though, he instantly adds credibility and fills that leadership void that was created when J-Kidd left.

As for drafting, I don't really think it gives an indication that the Nets are leaning one way or the other on Cousins or Favors. They BOTH need strong coaches in order to reach their potentials. If nothing else, it's simply an indication that the Nets don't plan on trading that third pick, and that they are indeed going to draft either Favors or Cousins (not Wes Johnson, Aminu, Monroe).

This move suggests to me that the Nets are thinking very strongly of drafting Cousins. Avery is the kind of coach that both spanks and hugs his players depending on the situation. Tough love...

Good hire. I like Avery's fire for the game, he motivated his players and commands respect. Also, the fiasco in Dallas wasn't his fault. It ultimately boils down to the players. You can see that the same thing keeps happening in Dallas even without AJ, Mavs disappear in the playoffs. Also, if the Nets do draft Cousins, I think Avery is the perfect coach for him. Avery will bring the best out of him and won't tolerate Cousins immature behavior.

Finally we have a coach and a very good one for this cast of lovable misfits. Two thumbs up!!!

And even if you don't like Avery Johnson, who were the Nets getting?

Being someone who thought our coaching search was becoming a joke, I'm just glad they picked somebody that wasn't a move of desperation. Avery is a good coach and will get some good things out of this team. He may not have been the best option out there, but the Nets needed to do something other than sleep the summer away.

One thing I can guarantee with Avery is that there will finally be some accountability and balance. No more 'touches' conversations. You win or you sit, no matter how few letters are used to spell your name. Also, and this is probably the most important, Avery has respect in coaching circles and could help acquire much better assistant staff than some other first-time coaches.

For an organization that is as much of a joke as the Nets are and have been, there should be no complaints about this. What, you thought Phil Jackson was going to coach the Nets? Or anyone better than AJ for that matter? Please. At this rate the Nets will be lucky to get any FA worth their salt and somehow break .500 next season.

@ Chris - he also took a team to the NBA finals in a ridiculously stacked Western Conference and was some screw job officiating away from winning the whole thing. The 2007 Warriors were a buzz saw... what are you going to do?

I like it. Out of all the options, I think this was the right move. Despite his playoff failures, he proved he can lead his team to a strong regular season, and playoff success will come. I think this is a good first step towards a successful offseason.

Why is this the right move? He took a 58 win team and made it a 60 win team that choked away the finals. Then a #1 seed lost to #8 GSW. And his players, owner and GM disliked him.

Avery’s choice of which players would be his “pets’’ and which would be in his “doghouse’’ was once thought to be the result of his knowledge of psychology. We now believe it was more about which players stood up to the coach’s screaming and which did not. The feisty Jerry Stackhouse made it clear more than two years ago that he would not; we are told Stack was inches away from a physical altercation with the badgering coach before he was pulled away by teammates. And the next thing you know, Avery is a “Stack guy.’’ (And yes, Mavs fans, that is the genesis of Avery’s BrokeStack Mountain love for his veteran.)

Sounds great.
AJ didn't spend enough time as an assistant.
