Could The Nets Still Get Evan Turner?

He’s looking at you, Rod. Right at you.

News broke today that the Sacramento Kings and the Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a trade, with Samuel Dalembert heading to the West Coast for Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni. Now, normally this would be irrelevant to the Nets & their fan base, but since the draft is now under a week away, and the Nets pick one spot below the Sixers, this could potentially have mass implications:

The Sixers have been deciding whether to select Evan Turner or Derrick Favors with the No. 2 pick. Although Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski is a Turner fan, new coach Doug Collins is high on Favors. With Dalembert gone and Nocioni in, it could push them in the direction of Favors.

There’s still a good chance that the Sixers will end up taking Turner on draft night, but trading your center – a renowned defensive monster and rebounder extraordinaire – for a decent small forward and a 7-footer who averaged six rebounds per game with little defensive reputation is not a sign that you’re interested in a swingman who replicates the skillset of your best player. You have to think that they’re looking at Favors very closely; the Sixers can’t possibly believe that Elton Brand and Spencer Hawes can handle the frontcourt every night. They’ll get abused on the defensive side of the floor and be one of the worst rebounding tandems in the league. Derrick Favors fits what they need more, and if Doug Collins has any say, he’ll be a 76er. I can even see Favors donning a Sixers cap now & Turner competing with Brook Lopez in the “who has the most ridiculous voice in New Jersey” contest.  (Don’t sleep on this. It’s basically Goofy Andre the Giant vs. Kermit the Frog. I would love to see these guys in a tandem interview.)

Crazy sounds aside, two more wild cards in this:

1) How they view DeMarcus Cousins. They just traded away their center, Cousins could fill that role instantly. If they’re truly enamored with his talent they might also consider him at the #2 spot as well considering his size and skill at rebounding the ball.

2) How badly Minnesota wants to move up. There have been countless reports that Minnesota is trying to trade their #4 and #16 pick for the Sixers second choice, and after this deal it would be hard to pass that up. The Sixers would still get one of the major big talents in this draft (Cousins or Favors after Turner goes to the Timberwolves) plus a bonus pick. The only way that deal falls through is if either side tries to ask for too much, or if the Timberwolves are able to swing a better deal for Al Jefferson or Kevin Love to open up space in the frontcourt.

Basically, the Sixers have just blown the draft (after the Wizards pick) wide open. Anything is possible at this point. I know that I’ve made my opinion very clear that the no-doubt #1 prospect in this draft is John Wall. I also know that I’ve spent far more time than anyone should deconstructing the debate between DeMarcus Cousins and Derrick Favors. I also know that I haven’t talked much about Evan Turner (I left that to Dennis). Because of that, let me just go on the record now: if Evan Turner is available at #3, the Nets should take him immediately and start dancing in the war room. The Evan Turner hype has been low; he didn’t measure out as an unbelievable athlete and isn’t flashy or interesting. But let’s be entirely clear: if you had the first pick in an NCAA 5-on-5 game this year, and your life depended on your team winning, you’d take Evan Turner in a heartbeat with that first pick. No question. The guy is an absolute warrior. I have little doubt that barring injury he’ll be a great player for the next dozen years. I’d be ecstatic to see him at the Rock next year.

I just love your style of writing. Will you consider writing for my blog as a guest writer?

Draft E.T., for frontcourt help! Nobody thinks of David Lee!! Love his work ethic, plus off. reb skills..

Lets see:

DMC = fat., lazy, curses at coaches, and hasn't even gotten his first fat paycheck. It will only get worse Nets fans. Anything less than Evan Turner will be a big disappointment.

Give Philly anything it wants short of Brook Lopez and Devin Harris meaning future draft choice most likely. I'd give them next years #1 to move up a spot. This is a two player draft and unfortunately we are at number 3!

You talk about it being just one spot but this one measley spot is the difference between getting a ten time all star ot a big fat project!

I laugh at you now!!! You people falling for the hype! Couldn't you tell that Evan Turner was a sympathy story... the world loves a hero, a success story.... but why don't you hear of ol' Evan now? Cause he SUCKS!!

he's a rookie who played for a coach that didn't tolerate rookie mistakes you idiot.

DC is not better tah ET, not even close.

How's this comment working out for you now? Evan is not even outscoring a guy that makes a 5th of his salary in Jodie Meeks!!! Turribull!!! Evan Turner got SYMPATHY from the media because he broke his back.. and came back to play. Anything to take away from th obvious player of the year that year in John Wall. Evan Turn was a bust pick... any idiot that has ever played a sport should have known that... But good for you Evan... you got your money, and have gone back to being soft!!

You're an idiot.

Instead of realizing Evan Turner is in his first year in the NBA, who has always progressed slowly at every level. You go right on ahead and proclaim him a bust.

While every other hyped up rookie is playing for a team destined to be back in the lottery in the 2011 Draft, Evan Turner is on a playoff team that has too many ball dominant guards and a head coach who didn't tolerate rookie mistakes on the floor. If Evan Turner was drafted by a team that sucked ass like the Wizards and was allowed to play through his mistakes, he would be averaging over 16 a game to go along with his assists and rebounds.

Demarcus Cousins and his 42% fg shooting on over 12 shots per game. For a 6'11 big man, that's TERRIBLE. He also has the green light to act like a dumbass on the court while barely managing to stay in the game because he's so fcking dumb, picking up stupid fouls.

LOL at you Nets fans hoping and praying the 76ers take someone other than Turner..... Get over it, Turner WILL be the 76ers selection. John has the best idea about trying to trade with the 76ers, because unless they receive a good trade, they will select Turner. Honestly though, I think you all are reading too much into it. I think Turner is the selection no matter what. They have been trying to get rid of Dalembert for a while, and they would also want to get rid of Brand and Iggy. They aren't trading Dalembert because they want to draft Favors of Cousins, they are rebuilding, and going young. Turner is the best player, so that is who they will get regardless.

LOL @ Turner the best player!!! How's that holding up for you now that it's almost the All-Star break? Turner shouldn't even be on the all-rookie team and he was drafted where???

@Les;
I agree. They should change the rule. 20 years old to get drafted. These players are way to young. Let them play in the "D" league if they can't or don't want to play in college. For every Garnett and Kobe there are many more who fail the ultimate test. Too much too soon. And I'm not just talking about money.

I like ET better because he seems like he has fewer question marks and risks than either Favors or DC. Upside of even being close to as good as BRoy or DWade is plenty of upside.

The draft seems to be changing a lot, ever since the dwight howard draft and the 1 year rule. In the past you always had the question of taking the high schooler with upside or the proven production of a NCAA star, usually with 2 years of experience. Now its like, all the top prospects have 1 - 2 years of NCAA and thats it.

I'm willing to bet if ET is there at #3 and Favors is there, the Nets will take ET. If Cousins is there the Nets will pass on ET and take Cousins. You take BPA and Cousins followed by Turner are the BPA's.

I'm a Favors fan, but let's be clear - ET would be the pick, no question, if he is still there at #3.

Philly still needs a legit scorer and PG.
Turner fills both of those needs.
Philly is trying to get rid of Brand also.
This is just the beginning folks there will be more trades

Start circling the wagons Favors fans. He will not be coming to the Nets. We will end up with Cousins or Turner. Favors slip is starting to show. Too bad, he is a very young kid who should of stayed in school another year. They are all young kids including Wes Johnson, and I wish them all the best.

It would be worth it to trade up a spot with Philly because then we 100% get the player we want. Why take a consolation prize, even if good, when it probably wouldn't take a lot to move up?

Turner is going to be a flat out superstar. He is so smooth with the ball and has an incredible md range game. Turner will be rookie of the year next year.

Instead we will take Favors as a consolation prize who is a long term project and barely averaged 12 points a game last season. He has almost no post moves in college and it will take a long time to develop at the nba level.Meanwhile we'll be watching Turner light it up in Philly.

Philly is definitely taking Turner unless they get a good trade deal. Philly would hang the GM who s barely hanging on and he knows it. Here is a possible trade with Philly.

We give them the right to trade first round draft picks one time over next five years. We could make it top 5 protected.

It would be incredible if we got Turner even though Favors definitely fills a need. There are more marquee PF free agents coming up and envisioning a line-up of Harris/Turner/T.Will/free agent/Brook Lopez makes the bad feelings from last year seem less harsh. But as it is, getting either Turner or Favors would fill a need and would be a good choice in the long run.

However, if we DO get Turner, we will have a three-way competition for the greatest voice in the NBA. Brook, Turner, and our new head coach. Imagine a huddle with the three of them?

We wait because we're only 1 spot back and it wouldn't be worth it to try and trade up. In addition, Favor's isn't exactly the worst consolation prize, so it's not as if there'a HUGE dropoff in talent, although one could argue need and fit.

If it would be that good for the Nets to get Turner and Sixers are waffling on him why don't the Nets try to trade up a spot with the 76ers. If we like Turner better why wait until draft night and have to hope he isn't selected by Philly.
