Looks Like It Will Be Derrick Favors

As always, Dave D’Alessandro has the skinny:

Here’s all you need to know about Cousins: He flubbed a shooting drill – just didn’t have it the first time through. Brick, reload, brick, snort, brick, angst. So after his turn was over, he asked to do it again – and he knocked down a very respectable percentage from a few steps above the nail.

The problem: He’s undoubtedly a five – say, the kind that Philly should seriously consider building around, but probably won’t. He’s lost some weight – down to 292 – but his size and skills say center, period.

That report from Minneapolis about Favors being out of shape? It was a feint, obviously. At least the Nets think so: Their internal dialogue in the last few days was about how Minnesota has already told the kid he’s their choice at No. 4, so the Wolves want to see him drop.

“I didn’t think so,” was all Polinsky would say when asked if the Georgia Tech kid was out of shape.

There is a ton more very good info over at Dave D’s post, but the gist of it is that Derrick Favors didn’t shy away from the contact.  That is what I thought they would be looking at, and I think now that they see he won’t be afraid to bang inside, he is going to be the pick.

Also of note is that the Nets scouts think that Cousins will be better suited to play the center position in the pros.  Since the Nets already have an All-Star caliber center on their roster it won’t make sense to draft them.  I agree.  There is no question that DeMarcus Cousins is going to be a solid pro, but I have said this over and over, it is about who the better fit with the roster is.  That better fit is Derrick Favors.

chad ford saw it otherwise. from his twitter account: "Another strong workout for Cousins in NJ today vs. Favors. He shot the lights out again. From what I gather it's now a toss-up in NJ @ 3"

I still think that if Evan Turner is off the board, we should get Wesley Johnson, probably by trading down to get him. I don't think Favors or Cousins are the pick because there are loads of good free agent power forwards out there this year, who are probably better than Favors/Cousins, but outside of LBJ (pipe dream) there aren't any free agent SG/SFs better than Johnson. I'd rate picking up Wes Johnson + something in a trade and Bosh/Lee/Stoudamire ahead of picking up Favors/Cousins + Gay/Joe Johnson. Fingers crossed our Russian Billionaire agrees.

My bad typo. At this point I want Favors but Couisns seems like a good guy and I think he gets too raw a deal from the media.

young shaq by the way, young shaw pft commented was deleted anyway.

Hey guys, quick reminder in the comments. Only one username per e-mail please. Thanks!

I hope those last too comments were sarcastic because if not. Wow. Young Shaw, draft trade lopez and sign bosh and Lebron. LMAO.

Honestly, it's a coin toss. The more I see DMC, the more I like his chances of making it big in the pros. He wants to prove people wrong big time. I don't get why people worry about his motivation vs Favors when he admitted that he was out of shape as well.

I think the key is the system under Avery Johnson. DMC proved he can hit a jumper from further out compared to Favors. Injuries can seriously hobble Favors' vertical and if his athleticism is a ? then DMC should get drafted. So the question, in my opinion, is how DURABLE is Derrick Favors?

Top 8 defense here we come.

Probably because he's going to Philly.

@Les,
The Nets asked ET to workout but he declined.

@Devin, There is no thing as a "sure" thing. I've read several "experts" who consider Cousins a bigger talent then Turner. Why would you draft Turner when you have Courtney Lee? Why, because Turner is the best BPA. Then why would you draft Favors over Cousins. I know... Favors is filling a need? The logic defies me.
But hey, it's only B-Ball. God help us come Thursday.

@Mark Wu;
That means Philly would be doing the same thing we are "supposeably" going to do, draft for need (Favors) instead of drafting BPA (Cousins). No wonder Sixers and Nets are in such bad shape. When picking this high you gotta draft BPA.

@les because a) we didn't expect him to get to 3, and b) if he falls to us, we're taking him. There's no question. We don't have to work out a sure thing.

Gotta wonder why we didn't even work out ET.

@mike

No, it would mean they wanted to fill their hole at the frontcourt more than they wanted to get BPA. Because you're kind of sad if you're starting frontcourt is Elton Brand and Spencer Hawes. You'd be demolished every night on the boards.

And under no circumstances is Turner getting past us.

If we get Turner, that means the Sixers, the only team to work him out, doesn't see potential "superstar" player. Makes you stop and think, even if it's the Sixers passing on him. Either that or Turner, Cousins and Favors are all that close in talent. I wouldn't be shocked if Turner fell to #4.

i just hope we make a good pick for the next 10 or 12 years, whoever it may be....i'm getting kind of tired of the Cousins vs. Favors pick...

but hopefully we get Turner =D

Is the fix in? Or are we being "punked"?
All during these last few weeks I get the impression that no matter what Cousins does Favors always gains ground while looking bad. Cousins workouts have been head and shoulders above Favors but somehow Favors stock goes up and Cousins goes down. That's is what leads me to believe that Cousins will be the pick That plus the small fact that Cousins is a much better player. I guess we will see who was right or wrong on their analysis come Thursday. Can't wait...

This is what Favors said today;
-------------------------
Favors admitted that the story out of Minnesota, about him being out of shape, had some truth to it.

“I’m not in the best shape,” Favors said. “I’m not in game shape. But I’m in good workout shape where I can push through my workout. I just took as it a criticism. .. .It was a good criticism.”
--------------------------
So why is Minnesota accused of" lying". Favors admitted he was out of shape last week, but nobody seems to want to read anymore. I wonder why Cousins and Favors did not go head to head. Maybe it was because Cousins man-handled him in Philly?

You have to take BPA and if you don't you are foolish. That's why the Nets will probably take Cousins. People do like to keep their jobs, especially in this economy. LOL
