Could Wesley Bring Boozer?

Typically here at NAS, we don’t post on every single rumor involving the Nets, but given just the sheer wackiness surrounding the organization and their lottery pick the past 24 hours, I thought it would be a good idea to fan the flames some more until things start to materialize tomorrow night.

The latest comes courtesy of Marc Stein and the TrueHoop mothership. With more and more people buying into the idea that the Nets are going to take Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson with the #3 pick, rather than Favors/Cousins is because Johnson has the same agent as free agent PF Carlos Boozer. So, in theory, bringing in Johnson could lead to Boozer.

So, here’s my take on all of this. A lot of the rumors that have been circulating the past 24 hours are all based on the same reality – it would appear that the Nets are less interested in projection and would rather put together a team next season that is ready to compete for a playoff spot. I understand Prokhorov wants to make a big splash and this team desperately needs to be competitive for their move to Brooklyn in two years, but this whole strategy is hugely unsettling. Lottery picks, in theory, should be used for the best talent available, and by landing the #3 pick, the Nets, hypothetically should take home one of the three best talents in the draft. By most accounts, that’s either Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins. My preference is Favors, and while the addition of Favors and maybe a free agent or two doesn’t guarantee the Nets return to the playoffs in 2011 – in fact, they probably won’t – if Favors develops into the player most scouts believes he can become, the Nets could have one the leagues most gifted PFs on their roster in 2-3 years. Meanwhile, I just don’t think a starting five of Devin Harris, Courtney Lee, Wesley Johnson, Carlos Boozer and Brook Lopez is anything more than a bottom half seed in the Eastern Conference – which brings the Nets back to where they were during the Vince Carter/Jason Kidd era – not good enough to win anything significant, and not bad enough to gather assets that could help them rebuild a la the Thunder.

Going on the assumption that three true game changers in FA, LeBron, Wade and Bosh, are not coming to New Jersey, I don’t think the best way to accomplish Prokhorov’s five-year plan is to import a role player like Johnson with the #3 pick in the draft while grossly overpaying for imperfect players in free agency. This is the same strategy the earned the Knicks an 8th seed and first-round ouster in 2004, followed by six years of salary cap hell.

is it the bucks 37th or 47th pick that we got 4 CDR

First WorldWide Wes, now this.

NBA: Where Manipulation Happens.

give the sixers #3 and lee for the #2 pick, everybodys happy.

@Everyone;
I just hope the Nets don't finish 1-4 in the lotto next year and make us go thru this torture all over again next year. Even if they call out Cousins name tomorrow, I will be too drained to cheer. Hope everybody makes it to Friday. LOL

@Mike-- I doubt he'd play it out, even though there are more postdraft trades of prospects than predraft ones. Kahn would probably just pick a big. We know he has no problem overfilling some positions :)

@Shea23:
Let me guess...
Playing Poker to get thru college = Future Investment Banker?

Actually poker helps put me through college. Yeah he's spreading a lot of stuff around but I believe that he's not interested in Cousins. If you weren't a fan of cousins you wouldn't mention him in every post. :P Seriously I like him but there are better prospects that also fit better.

@CAT;
Do you believe Thorn would actually play out the bluff, and actually draft Johnson? That would take really big ones.

This Wes Johnson thing had better be a head fake to trick Kahn into trading up. Otherwise it's indefensible.

How about this then?

"“Cousins has great hands and great feet, and he knows how to play,” Thorn said. “But you know, it’s a leap of faith there to suggest that he can play the 4. He can shoot the ball well, and he can face the basket. But I don’t think he’ll take it from 20 feet and go by people, and defensively it could be even more of a problem.”
In their internal discussions, the Nets have concluded that in spite of Cousins’ great talent, it would be very hard for him to complement Brook Lopez as the full-time power forward unless he trimmed down to 265 pounds — and he might have enough trouble getting down to 275."

Yes, Mike, Thorn doesn't have the final say on who we'll draft but Ryan Blake does. Awesome.

Cousins not a PF?...Oh by the way...
------------------------------
“DeMarcus Cousins, (Georgia Tech forward Derrick) Favors, those are the types of guys that we are considering power forwards and centers, ” said Ryan Blake, the NBA’s director of scouting.
--------------------------------

CDR for a 2012 2nd rd pick...doesn't make sense. As previously noted Nets have only 6 players under contract for next year. Assuming Nets keep and sign all 3 picks, that makes 9. They will need to sign a minimum of 4 FA's to fill out the roster. Two of the current players, DH and Yi have a history of being injury prone. I thinks Bucks got a steal there. Next year I think we'll be looking at the lottery again..

Has anybody considered the thought that Thorn might not be the "guy" with the final say on who we are going to draft. Sounds like Thorn might not be coming back. Maybe he doesn't have the "pull" everybody assumes he has. Maybe Thorn is just a decoy at this point. Just thinking aloud...

I am more convinced then ever that Cousins will be the pick. I'm not a great "fan" of Cousins, I just believe you must draft the BPA. It's that simple. Cousins has the potential to be the great impact player we need. Do you wonder where all the great players come from. Answer = draft.
P.S. If you believe anything coming out of Thorn's mouth right about now, I would suggest you should never play poker for real money... seriously!

And for the last time people, if Turner is on the board we are taking him period.

@ Mike, you sure do love Cousins I'll give you that. I don't know how in the face of everything you still think Cousins is the pick. But Thorn has flat out said we're not going with cousins. What you said about trickery is likely the case fo Favors but at the end of the day Cousins not comming here is the only thing we can be certain of.

@mike except they don't think Cousins can play the power forward spot.

Any truth that NO would be willing to do Paul, Okafor for Harris, #3?

omg! i hate this rumor. how is some rookie scrub (no offense - i love Wes) going to influence a 9-year vet!?!? That makes so little sense. If anything; Boozer having a home in Jersey is a bigger draw, and he's already stated that his home is Jersey is not an influence.

Frankly, I don't think either player is a reality. I just think Thorn is f'ing with Wolves for their Favors-unfit comments.

Well said, TWill attacks the basket & CLee shoots the ball JUST LIKE if not better than Wes Johnson, his two strengths. I was never on the Cousins bandwagon until I heard about this Johnson situation. Dont do it Rod. BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE always, especially when you only have about 6 guys on the roster.

It seems to me, just after the Cousins/Favors workout Monday, the Nets decided Favors was out of favor. Cousins is logically now the pick. All this talk and leaks at the last hour is a last minute attempt to get Minny or Kings to move up and grab Johnson or Favors. As long as Nets believe Cousins will be there they will play along. If no trade happens the Nets draft Cousins even if Turner somehow is still on board. Forget about Johnson, Monroe, Favors etc.
Cousins will be the pick.

Could Wesley bring Boozer? Does a head cold bring pneumonia? We can overdraft a marginal talent in order to bring in a crappy overpaid free agent?

I am frightened. I need hope...someone help.
