Rod Thorn Stepping Down July 15th

One of my favorite sayings about the Nets (and one I used a ton when trying to explain any Nets’ move) was “In Rod We Trust.”  After July 15th, that saying is going to be pretty much useless because according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard writing for ESPN New York, Rod Thorn is stepping down:

Thorn, the Nets president since 2000, is under contract through June 30 but will remain for two weeks to help the club through the first two weeks of the free-agency period.

Thorn is not being forced out by new owner, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, and there is no tension between the two, according to sources.

“They’ve given Rod everything he could want,” a league executive said. “This is entirely his decision.”

Many people are going to remember Rod Thorn as the “Man who drafted Michael Jordan,” but what he did in New Jersey is going to always stick with me.  Thorn did a great job of bringing in talent and also getting rid of talent at just about the right time.  He somehow kept the team competitive, creatively bringing in big player after big player, retooling instead of rebuilding.  And when he finally decided to rebuild, he swiftly made that decision and took a roster of older, big salary players and stripped the roster down to a young core, most of them still on their rookie contracts.

Despite the 12 win season last year, I think that Rod Thorn did a fantastic job of putting this team in a very good position to turn around quickly.  Usually rebuilding takes 5-6 years (just look at teams like Indiana and Detroit) but Rod Thorn has put the Nets in a position to make the playoffs next year, even if LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, or Chris Bosh don’t come to New Jersey.

Moving forward, the obvious choice for the new Nets GM has to be just fired Portland GM Kevin Pritchard.  In case you don’t know who Pritchard is, he is the man who turned the Blazers around in short order and he wasn’t fired because he was doing a bad job (there was some ownership issues there).  Prokhorov was willing to give Rod Thorn $8 million over two years, and in my opinion I don’t think he’d have any reservations about opening up his check book and writing down a hefty sum to sign Pritchard, one of the best GMs in the league…even if he’s unemployed.

nets have 99 problems but lebron ain't one of them.

Don't forget Nets also have Jay-Z. He can rap a song for lebron about coming to the Nets.

@Shanghaista D Rose better than Devin but Deivin is still very good. Lopez is much better than Noah who I love and will get a lot better. Don't really see Deng as an asset because he's overpaid and plays Lebron's position. T Will and C Lee, Favors are as good core if not better than Gibson Warrick etc.
In my opinion the nets have just as much to offer in terms of a core. I know the bulls made the playoffs but the nets would have been much better with a coach, less injuries and a real bench.

Two areas the nets have an advantage owners, nets have MP who is a big draw. Reinsdof i a cheap ass. Also Managment got a lot of bad press for the way they fired del negro and for the physical incident. The nets have a great management team.

D Wade also totally bashed the bulls for their lack of loyalty to their players a while and majorly questioned why Pippen and Jordan had to go elsewhere to get jobs etc They should have a huge advatange going after D Wade because its his home town. They don't because of how he perceives them you think other players don't think like that too. Just a little?

i say bring in jerry colangelo so the raptors can give bosh for two 2nd draft picks and yi and humphries
everyone seems to be getting favors around the leauge.

How about this everyone, how about we let lebron become the GM/player of the team? He can do whatever he wants trade and sign whoever he wants.

It isn't bryan it is his dad who nets are considering. I still think KP is the best fit.

Looks like it is going to be Bryan Colangelo. This is the guy that traded Kidd to the Nets for Stephon Marbury. Great.

The Nets better bring KP in by July 1st otherwise forget Lebron or any other star player.

Oh and my biggest point is that Lebron will care about losing 30 million and that the Bulls don't have as much they can offer cleveland than the Nets do. 30 mil is a lot of money, even to multimillionaires.

@Shanghaista

Something I have come to realize is that while other teams like the Heat and Knicks are clearing house, they don't have any assets. The Bulls have two assets: Derrick Rose and Noah--but they are only assets in the sense that they can attract other talent, they aren't tradeable assets. They aren't tradeable not because the Bulls CANT trade them but because the Bulls WONT trade them.

.

Now try and follow me here, the Nets have cap space AND assets, tradeable and attractive to play with. See, a good situation isnt to have tons of cap space and cross your fingers. Having the ability to have cap space, great players to play with AND tradeable assets is a much better situation. For instance, what if Lebron says to Cleveland, "Look I am going to Chicago, they have the best team."

.

Cleveland says, "Ok. Well then you have to be prepared to take on losing up to 30+ million dollars to do that."

.

Lebron thinks about it, and says, "Can't you guys just sign and trade me please, I've done so much for this organization, and i told you I am leaving either way..."

.

"Sorry Lebron, unless the Bulls want to give us Derrick Rose" Cleveland says.

.

While the media circus will ontop of all this by then, a younger team with more talent spread throughout its roster gets into the conversation. This team has assets and TRADEABLE assets. This team is called the NJ Nets.

.

The Nets butt in and say to cleveland and Lebron, "Hey look over here, we have a complete team too! Nothing is up in the air like the Knicks and Heat. We have an up n coming stud in Derrick Favors, a georgia tech player who is mentored by Chris Bosh." (Hell, we might even have Chris Bosh by then, but lets assume we have only what we have today.)

.

We also mention to Cleveland that we can give them very valuable pieces if they agree to sign and trade.

.

Lebron says, "Wait a minute, isn't that the way I am going make 30 million more right!?"

.

Cleveland shrugs and nods.. But they know that if they are certain to lose Lebron to free agency then they would most likely hastily scramble to get some upper level talent in return.

.

The Nets up the ante by saying, "Hey Cleveland, we will give you Devin Harris (and his terrific cheap contract) AND the Warriors first round pick next year AND your pick of Derrick Favors, Courtney Lee, Terrence Williams, or Yi Jianlian."

.

The Cavs gladly take Devin Harris and Derrick Favors rather than have nothing in return for Lebron.

.

The Nets still are more of a complete team than the Heat or the Knicks at this point (subtracting Devin and Derrick with or without Lebron).

.

Lebron thinks it over and says, hey you know Chicago, I dont really wanna play in MJs shadow anyway and would rather play with a REAL center in Brook Lopez and my other buddy Chris Bosh.

.

Oh and because the Nets traded 14 more million off their books they can make a run at another top tier free agent(s).

.

Calling Mr. Wade. Hi, we have Mr. James, Mr. Bosh and Mr. Lopez, care to join us?

.

This is all because NJ Nets have option. We have tradeable assets. We are set up in a way that gives up flexibility to play ANY hand we are dealt.

.

Granted, predicting (the) 3 major free agents to land here is a bit much, but my point is that the Bulls cannot change much more as a team. The Heat are not a team. And the Knicks have a few shooters who cannot defend. The Nets have a team and options.

Really Sam? Seriously? I'm a Nets fan, but you can't tell me a D-Rose(younger All-Star lock), Luol Deng, LeBron, Gibson/Warrick, Noah(Young, center, and possibly talented) isn't better than any supporting cast we can give LeBron....Not to mention, Chicago can pay a lot more for a second free-agent than NJ can...depressing now that i've actually listed it all out....

OMG!!! After personally watching KP's handiwork in Oregon these past two years, I was extremely disappointed when Thorn got a vote of confidence when MRMC bought the team. (Camby trade the most underrated trade in a long, long time)

Long live the Pritch-Slapping era in New Jersey!

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5329335

Marc Stein reporting a source says the Nets will be the first team to meet with James, who will ONLY be seeing teams near his hometown.

Rod will still be on our team, and still has a chance to go down with the greats.

Pitch to Lebron:

We're the only team that can give you a young, talented center. We have a tough coach with the best active winning percentage. Our PG is near all star quality. We have Favors and we can get you Amare, possibly Bosh. We have an explosive sixth man off the bench (Terrence Williams). You're living in the same place you would if you play in NY and in 2 years, Lebron, Favors and Brook Lopez are ten times scarier than any lineup the Bulls could throw at you.

It looks like Pritchard and Jerry Colangelo are the two favorites right now.

Make the godfather offer to Presti! Him and Morey are the only ones who seem to know what they are doing.

maybe he can make some big moves quickly and not to much responsibility will be put on the new guy

And he better do it soon otherwise we might lose some good FAs during those two weeks in July.

Well i hope it works out for everyone then, Pritchard, nets and Thorn. I hope Thorn will do everything in his power to recruit KP before he leaves.

You know Cleveland is looksing for a GM as well, what if he decides to go there or better yet what he decides to take a year or two off. Thorn could have waited until the end of the FA signings that is why I said he screwed them. I hope they do sign KP otherwise all is lost.

The Nets situation is a lot more attractive in my opinion. With the Nets, you have the ability to build the roster the way you want it (tons of cap space, not a lot of roster spots given away). More importantly, if he goes to the Nets, he knows Prokhorov will pay him well and he will be in the news. There is no way he takes a year or two off either, he wants to come back to work and stick it to the Blazers...

Very sad. Loved Rod wish him all the best really hope they snap up KP who is also an amazing GM.

KP is one of the best. If anyone can replace Rod, it'll be him. The way he managed to help Portland even on his exit out was applause-worthy.

Sebastian what makes you think that the Nets have pritchard? what if they don't get him? if your a FA like Lebron why would you want to come to a situation like this?

How can Thorn leave during the most important time? he is kind of screwing the Nets a bit and I kind of lost respect for him.

That's the wrong attitude to have. He has done a fantastic job with this team, and family is obviously more important. I almost think this is the perfect time for him to leave with Pritchard getting fired yesterday...

I feel like it HAS to be Pritchard, unless we could somehow pry Sam Presti out of OKC

Let's truly make this Portland Trailblazers East.
Kevin Pritchard & Sean Penn

I hope Thorn stays to atleast hire his successor.

better hope they get pritchard otherwise all is lost and it is going to be the same old Nets once again.
