A Final Adios to Yi

I know I haven’t been kind to Yi Jianlian recently (though, I’ve certainly never eviscerated him the way Kelly Dwyer did this morning at Ball Don’t Lie), but his trade yesterday to the Washington Wizards for Quinton Ross does mark the end of an era for one of the more fascinating players in Nets history. There clearly wasn’t a more polarizing figure amongst Nets fans, as we all seemed to be battling between the mounds of potential he oozed and his lack of basketball IQ which led to some maddening mistakes. In an effort to be kind, I thought I’d go back to happier times and repost a video I did on Yi when he first returned from injury in December. In typical Yi fashion, it’s one of the more highly viewed videos I’ve done in my short NAS tenure:

If Yi becomes an allstar than Derrick Favors will be a hall of famer.

Are we joking here? Yi for Ross? Nets traded one of their top young players for a Micheal Jordan look-alike? Yi will probably be an all-star with Wall and Hinrich passing him the ball. Devin Harris and Lopez did not know how to pass to Yi as they were just too selfish. Nets will regret this crazy trade.

If Yi becomes an all-star, then fine. We shouldn't really be hoping that he is a bust, even though he was for us.

same kind of worry as Dee, Yi may have better chance with John Wall. I hope we made the right decision and will lead us to get LB.

The Nets are going "all in". They might regret "dumping" Yi but sometimes you gotta go for it all. Just like Chicago and Miami are trying to do. If it don't work out, hey that's life. Lets go Nets...

well this is the only thing i'm worried about with this trade.. What if Yi goes to Washington and becomes like an all-star or something? That would suck for us. I hope we don't see that happen. I hope he is a bust.

It was playing like that which lead to the belief that he could be a great player in the NBA. But after performances like that he would disappear. It's consistency that makes an NBA player and you can't have one great night and 3 lousy ones. It has to be constant effort every night even when things are not going your way. Many young players give up on a game when things don't go their way. Great players never give up, ever, until the buzzer sounds. If he ever learns this along with playing defense he might just be a really good player. But I don't think he has the work ethic needed.
