Nets FA Targets: Ray Allen

Ray Allen

Age: 34

Height: 6-5

Position: SG

Key 2009-10 Stats: 16.3 ppg, 36.3% 3p%, 15.22 PER

What to Like About Allen: His outside shooting.  The Nets were terrible from the three point line last year, and it really hurt the productivity of their offense.  When you have a three point shooter like Ray Allen, he doesn’t even need to have or shoot the basketball to help an offense.  Teams are so worried about Allen, that when he comes off screens away from the basketball defenses tend to focus on him, and that opens things up for the rest of the team, especially a big man like Brook Lopez.  Looking at what Brook Lopez was able to do with no outside shooting presence to take away double and triple teams, and you have to be impressed.  Lopez didn’t have a ton of chances to work in the post one on one, but a shooter like Ray Allen will create more opportunities for Brook Lopez.  Oh, and when he does get the basketball, Ray Allen has one of the quickest, most effective releases I have ever seen.  Ray Allen is a knock-down shooter.

What’s Not to Like about Allen: Age.  Ray Allen is probably going to want a multi-year deal (since this could be Allen’s last long term deal of his career), and while I see him being effective next year, I don’t know about 2, 3, or 4 years from now.

Around the web on Allen: Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com: Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said Wednesday that bringing back free agent guard Ray Allen and keeping the nucleus of the Celtics together would be his preference, particularly after coming up just short of a world title this past season.

“I think that is the most likely scenario,” Ainge said on Boston sports radio WEEI (850 AM) when asked about re-signing the soon-to-be 35-year-old Allen. “We love Ray. We know Ray has basketball left in him. We have to make wise financial decisions knowing that Ray is going to have other options, but also knowing that Ray has basketball left in him. He’s a difference maker in us winning or losing.”

This Bloggers Take: Ray Allen is going to be on top of many teams Free Agency lists (including the Nets), but if the Nets can get him to agree to a two year deal for not too much money, they really need to look into it.  Ray Allen would bring a legitimate shooting threat to the Nets, something that they didn’t have last year.

The point I was making is that Lee is still young, can learn how to play defense much better than he does. If he comes to NJ, Avery Johnson will demand that he does improve his defense. I'm not saying that Lee with suddenly be shutting down chris bosh in the post, i'm just saying that Lee can play much better defense than he is right now, and because he is still young, can become a very good defender if he puts enough effort into it.

Well, LeBron wasn't a notably poor defender coming into the L, but he wasn't as great as he is now by a longshot. He basically made himself an elite defender over the past two seasons. Maybe it's unfair to name LBJ since he's kind of a freak of nature, but throwing it out there for what it's worth.

Name me a guy, who entered the league as a notably poor defender, and became a good one? Certainly every guy improves over time as they get more calls and get used to the way the NBA game is played. I'm trying to think of someone, I mean I can definitely names guys who became terrible defenders over time... but not really the reverse.

@Scrapin240- Really? So you don't think that if David Lee put in more effort at the defensive end he would become a better defender? The best defenders just know how to play defense, and have long arms and are strong to defend the toughest guys. However, there is a technique to defense that can be improved apon to become a better defender.

Woah I'd say a pretty big no for this unless they get LeBron or D-Wade. The Nets don't have much scoring to begin with and adding a shooter-only threat will only give them one option. All that will do is allow the Defense to colapse on Allen. He will be overpriced and is very good at what he does, but just doesnt bring enough to the table long term. That's what the Nets need. I say they develop Favors as fast as possible and use the Twin Towers idea that the Spurs had with Lopez and Favors. Then with Devin Harris and LeBron or Dwayne Wade, the will be legitimate contenders, which is what Prokhorov promised, right? So if they sign one of those two guys then it would be a great short term deal to get Allen. If they get neither, then I would leave Allen alone unless he signs for a fair amount.

@Tucker
you don't learn to play D at the NBA level..either you can or you can't

Sign Allen for 2 years and sign Boozer for 5 years.

I just don't think that you should change the entire style of the team because one player is too lazy to play with the rest of the team. I think Lee would be willing to learn to play defense. Also, I don't think the Nets would have to throw a max level deal at him to get him to come to New Jersey. As far as Allen is concerned, I think someone is going to grossly overpay him to pry him away from Boston. If the nets can get him at the mid-level exeption, then they should, and use him as a sixth man and/or possibly rotate him and Courtney Lee at the starting 2 guard spot.

Tucker, David Lee is a notoriously bad defender. Just because he rebounds doesn't mean he plays defense. Amar'e rebounds, but under a PHX system, rebounds aren't really his job because they should be out in transition once Lopez/Amundsdon can outlet pass to start the break. Then again, Amar'e sometimes gets lazy as well.

Lee is a hustler and has great energy, but not someone you want to fill your roster at a max level deal. The only thing I'll give him is that his spotless injury record is encouraging.

Onto Ray, I think if the Nets play him sparingly, he can be extremely effective. But play him too much and you see results like in the NBA finals.

I agree with Jfree781, I would much rather have David Lee than have Amar'e. Lee plays hard, plays defense, and rebounds. Just about everything Amar'e does not do, Lee does, and he comes at a much cheaper price. Lee played hard every night on the Knicks, that shows his determination and effort right there.

Please explain to me how David Lee is overrated. The kid is a monster who consistently puts up double doubles and plays with intensity. And yet players that don't do nearly as much as him get more shine than him. If anything I would say he is closer to being underrated.

Les, must avoid at the price I think Lee will go for. I think he's over rated and a bad fit with Brook also, making him owrht even less to the Nets.

What's so bad about David Lee? No one wanted to sign him last summer and he took the Knicks deal... and now this summer people keep talking him down as well. He averaged at least a double double per 48 minutes every season he's been in the league - even prior to d'antoni's uptempo. He's also pretty efficient, shooting a high% from the floor and the free throw line. Not worth a max deal, but I don't see "must avoid".

I like it for the right price. Allen = wins. Look at the bucks and especially seattle.

Why in no one talking about Dirk. He'd look good as a Net and there' the Euro connection with Prohkrov. We should also look at Scola who is way underrated, though I think he's a RFA.
Gay and Lee are must avoids. JJ would be a nice fit but won't come unless someone else does.

This should be a No. Unless he's getting mid cap exception money. He is past his prime, and shouldn't be on the radar. Kyle Korver should have always been a Net, so maybe he comes home

Similar things could be said about Kyle Korver while of course he can't compare to Ray Allen. Also, he would be a cheaper option and more likely to join the roster.

He'll almost certainly be overpriced, but otherwise would be a great fit for the Nets, who have a lot of smalls who live off the drive.

I don't really see the point in Allen unless you get LeBron and be a serious contender. He doesn't have THAT much left in the tank, he's a 6th man at this point
