Nets on the Net: Notes from Prokhorov, More Plan B’s

ESPN’s Chris Broussard obtained some notes from Mikhail Prokhorov’s conversations with his top executives from this past weekend. Some things Prokhorov notably said is he believes Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will join forces in Miami and if LeBron James were to join them, he would win a few championships but diminish his own brand. He believes Cleveland’s hometown edge is going to be tough to overcome but if the Nets do land James, they would sign Carlos Boozer or David Lee to be his PF caddy. If the Nets don’t land James, they’re going to play it smart, make some “meaningful trades” and keep cap space for next summer.

As for backup plans, Dave D’Alessandro notes that the Nets brass has been in contact with Lee and Boozer’s people, despite not having a formal meeting with them yet. Adrian Wojnarowski believes the Nets could make a play for beleaguered PF Tyrus Thomas. Apparently the Nets didn’t get their fill of big men not fulfilling their potential when they were dealing with Yi Jianlian. Al Iannazzone lists Matt Barnes, Richard Jefferson, Rasual Butler, Joe Alexander, Carlos Boozer, David Lee, Raymond Felton and Randy Foye as other options. But the Nets shouldn’t start having dreams of landing next summer’s big fish, Carmelo Anthony, as Fanhouse is reporting he’s likely to sign an extension with Denver.

NBA.com's David Aldridge reports Kevin Pritchard, who was fired by the Blazers on draft night, will get an interview with the Nets. What took so long?

I think its great that Thorn is being pushed out. Kiki too. Look at what OKC did when Clay took over, they brought in Presti at age 30? He dumped the team's two best players for cap space and picks and within 3 years they are in a position to contend for YEARS. All by flushing out the old, in-the-box, conservative, fools who were running the Sonics before hand.

Why all this negativity? We won 12 games last season. If we win 40+ that's not a good enough improvement. Like spoiled children because we didn't get LeBron or some other overpaid free agent. Thanks but no thanks, do by drafting and developing good players like the way Oklahoma is doing and Chicago is doing. Fiscal responsibility goes a long way to having a future. Do y'all think the Hawks have a future paying Joe Johnson $120 million dollars...NO!!!!

I am now convinced that the Nets will not acquire any FA worth more than 10m this off season. For the Nets; those who are great won't play, and those who are good won't get pay. Nets have really backed themselves into a corner with this doctrine and they're about to rediscover relentless losing. The league only has so many all-stars, bloated contracts or not, no one can escape that fact.

Should have, could have, would have......it's about reality not 20/20 hindsight. You live in the day and the moment but prepare for the future. The future is never the way you envisioned it and never works out the way you planned it. So you must act NOW. When a GM becomes available we'll hire one. Until then we need a few veterans to help us get to the next level as our young players develop and they will.

I would rather sit back and do nothing then make a fatal mistake. It's crazy that Thorn or whoever, is running the train, the same train that they are jumping off of next week or so. This guy Proky should of been better prepared.

to your other point. Unfortunately, the Nets dont have the luxery of sitting back and waiting to find a GM. Free agency is already underway. This is not an ideal world.

It can't be the guy from the Hornets bc of his issue with AJ. The old Nets would make that move. Lets hope the new Nets are different. I would love to see them get the guy from Ok City or the guy who was fired from Portland.

Maybe we should put a hold on any signings or deals and first hire a G.M. It always struck me odd that our new G.M. whoever that might end up being, will have had no say on the important moves made. Crazy way to run a business.

If the Nets could some how land LeBron, Lee, and Miller that would be the perfect scenario to me. You have a starting line up

C - Lopez
PF - Lee
SF - LeBron
SG - TWill
PG - Harris

with a bench of, Favors, James, Miller, Lee, Zoubek and another point guard. That combo could easily compete for a title probably next year, but certainly within a couple of years.

David Lee is a class guy with no ego and a team player. He is a vary hard worker and is coachable. I would be absolutely shcoked if he came to the Nets a played no defense. He might not be the greatest defender around, but he will work on it and be more than adequete. I much prefer him to boozer. Lee averaged more assists (3.6) than Boozer (3.2) last year so I am not sure where the comment about him not being able to pass comes from. He and Brook woudl made a great high low combo.

Boozer or Lee would be a great upgrade from what we have now. Maybe we should trade for Chris Paul. Sign Boozer or Lee and trade Harris and Favors and draft picks for Paul. Paul is a risk with his knees but at least we would have some hope for the upcoming season.

I'd love Boozer here. I'd take Lee second. As to D Lees' defense or lack of, blame D'Antoni. His teams do not play defense.

I do love David Lee, but the Nets should be looking for more rounded players up front (meaning: ones that give a damn about defense), which is why I think Boozer is a better fit. Boozer and Lopez would have the potential to be the best passing frontcourt in the league.

Knicks are being more active this off season, while the Nets seem very passive...yeah I know they have all these talks...but actions speak louder than words ( sorry about the cliche). people around the league are watching... Any word about Kris Humphries..heard he has interest around the league. I don't dislike him but really don't see his future here. Whether we clear up cap space for now or future shouldn't be the issue, we need better players...period

What is scary is that the Knicks will probably be better then us next season. The Nets are still bad. If we don't land LeBron we will not make the playoffs. Who's making the basketball moves for the Nets? Ratner? So far we drafted the wrong guy, are close to being shutout of any major free agents and gave away Yi for nothing. Nice start to the new Nets era. Avery Johnson might want to retire for family reasons any day now.

there's no way we'll bring in thomas, and if they do that would be just ridiculous. If we bring in another PF it had better be Lee cuz he has proven that he can play PF and C, so then we have a very solid three man rotation at PF and C.

I hate the idea of Derrick Favors sitting on the bench for 3 years.
