2010 Salary Cap: Where The Nets Stand

The Nets have made three signings (two signings and one offer sheet to be exact, but we will count all three as if they sign with the Nets for purpose of this discussion) over the past week.  This obviously means that the amount of money the Nets have in terms of cap space has decreased.  I think now is a good time to look at where we stand, so we can see what moves are available moving forward:

Numbers from the great site ShamSports.com

* – The $500,000 attributed to Keyon Dooling is the guaranteed portion of his contract.  $500,000 of his 2010 salary was guaranteed, so if he was cut (which is what happened) he gets paid that amount and it goes against the Nets cap.

** – The rookies aren’t signed yet, this is just 100% of the cap hold attributed to their draft slot.

*** – Unlike the Outlaw deal (which has been announced at a $7,000,000 flat per year basis) the per year figures for these two deals hasn’t come out yet.  Just divided the total amount by the total years to get a close enough estimate.

Alright, so as everything stands right now, the Nets are currently sitting with right around $19,500,000 in salary they can offer for this upcoming season.  What we heard from Chad Ford is that they don’t plan on spending all of it:

The Nets plan to use about $20 million of their $30 million in cap space this summer. The plan is to hang on to the other $10 million to use as an asset for in-season trades (they way the Thunder have masterfully done the past two years) and, if nothing materializes, roll the cap space over to the 2011 season.

If this report is true, the Nets plan on spending about another $10 million while holding onto the rest.  This could change though, especially if the Nets want to make an offer on a guy like Luis Scola.  The only way the Nets can get him is if they make an offer of something like $13 or $14 million a year (and even then, it isn’t a guarantee that the Rockets don’t match).  That deal would also still leave them with around $5 million for in season moves, and give them some cap room to carry over into next year.  I think this will be the move we hear about next.

Guys let's stop on the Favors ripping. No one is expecting him to step in and be Dwight Howard. Avery said his goal is to take him VERY slow... He made a fair comparison to when KG entered the league DIRECT out of high school. He was a backup up for like half a season... And once he started he still made plenty of errors and often looked lost. It's a LEARNING process.

Favors will be worked in slowly and if he does 9 and 7 this year we should be happy. I say that because he might even have a number of DNP's early on.

Avery will work with him and get him to understand the game as quickly as possible.

The kid is raw but might have the most talent in the draft. Wall, Turner, Johnson and Cousins are more NBA ready but that doesn't mean there ceilings are higher. Just give it time.

@gabe

i don't disagree with any of that, although I still think he needs a lot of seasoning and is a few years away from being a reliable post player.

We only have around 18 million dollars left so at this point I'd rather focus on Jordan farmar or Jason Williams than spend our load on Luis scola. I agree with the others, I'd rather start Hump and let favors get 20+ minutes a game behind him. We need to look at trades and see what stars we would be able to pick up and be able to absorb a large contract, ex: CP3 with peja

there arent any power forwards left worth giving up cap space for. i would rather just start humphries and develop favors. humphries does play hard. and favors has a lot of talent.

Ben Wallace isn't much of a power forward. Actually , he'd be terrible. Backup center , sure. But they already filled that position.

Also, I wish Ben Wallace wasn't crazy tight with Dumars cuz' that is EXACTLY who I want as a stop-gap for Favors. Top-notch post defense w/o taking shots away from Lopez. He would help Favors develop faster from practicing against each other. He only made 1.2 mil. last year and I'd love to offer him a 6-10 mil contract to pry him away. Otherwise we're off sucking again and hitting draft multi-times like OKC.

TWill ain't no PG just like Evan Turner ain't no PG. They're unselfish wing players and that is a must with a scoring PG like Harris. TWill needs to just focus on shooting and ball security/handling because that's where he gets exploited.

On a separate note, I've deduced that the Nets ceiling this coming season is 20-29th best record in NBA. I count 19 teams they have no chance being better than and even 20-25 is iffy territory that i think only good coaching could account for.

Wit all the 2s and 3s on this team that are legit starters I think that a trade is going to happen.

@Tes.
.
Summer league is harder for bigs than guards/wings. Always has been always will be. Only Tim Duncan or Dirk could really kick ass in summer league (Dirk especially since he is really a wing player on the offensive end). The reason for this is because:
.
1) guards don't look for bigs nearly half as much as they do in the NBA
.
2) because players cannot foul out so they foul all the time. And fouls aren't often called against defensive bigs when they foul other bigs--this leads to the teams being less productive when a big misses a shot because their guy was fouled.
.
3) its a super reduced game. its like 36 minutes right? and lastly .
4) Terrence Williams. Even though he passed the ball a lot and was truly spectacular it was really his show the first four games. Not until he sat out nearly all of game five did the Nets really play team basketball.

Damn.. Favors making more that B.Lo.. lol (I know it's because Favors was #3 and Brook was a #10 pick).. but damn.

i dont see how oyu cant help teach a kid how to dribble up the floor, because if twill can get better at that, he should definitely be the backup pg. didnt you guys see how great of a passer he can be last season?? his vision is amazing.

twill did struggle in that area. but thats something they could address in training camp. i just dont want to settle for a back up pg

Twill will struggle bringing the ball up the floor under defensive pressure. He's good at the point forward thing , but he needs to be paired with a true point guard.

If we couldnt get farme, then i say lets give t-will a chance at back up point guard. He played pretty well in the summer league...

I'm not sure Farmar would want to come to a team that won 12 games and didn't get any better in the offseason yet through trades or free agency unless they pay him Outlaw type money.

I think should go for Carlos Arroyo myself. He'd be cheaper.

I would love to get farmer as a back up pg. As for the power forward position, i dont want scola or haslem. I would rather start humphries and let derrick back him up. Favors may look lost now. But it's just summer league. He is going to learn so much in training camp. Remember, popeye jones is coaching him in the summer league. So it's but so much he is learning. I think he will be ready to be a steady back up by the start of the season...

@jdoc that very likely. but i think jordan farmar should be our back up pg. solid shooter and winner and good young guy

You left out the Nets signing of Ben Uzoh and Brian Zoubek.

Typically summer league player are paid $25k, and more if they go to training camp with the Nets. All money paid to these players will count against the Nets 2010-11 cap.

I expect J-Will to sign with Miami for peanuts.

@JDoc we still need a back up for Harris. This is an 82 game season. There will be injuries. We all witnessed it @ the start of last season leading us to only 12 wins. Jay Will is a pass first point guard in his later stage. T-Will is going to share the point but I can see him coming off the wing throwing it down from a Jay Will alley. He is 34yrs old and if we get him CHEAP I'm all for it.

T-Will is going to be the back up Point Guard/Point Forward from the 3. We need another Power Forward.

We really are betting heavily on T-Will's development. He's going to be a swiss army knife for us out there, and a big time factor in our success or failure.

Felton went to the Knicks! If we can't get Kyle Lowry as a back up PG I'd settle for Jason Williams @ a CHEAP price. He still has some gas in the tank and could give us a good 12-15mins per while Devin gets his rest.

PG - Harris
SG - C.Lee - Mr.T - Morrow - Ross
SF - T. Outlaw - Damion James
PF - Humphries - Favors
C - Lopez - Petro

Excess at Shooting Guard.
No backup point guard yet.
Humphries is a backup PF.
Favors isn't ready yet.

Decision time.

Play a SG out of position at PG and add a better starting PF?

or

Sign a backup point and let the Humphries/Favors combo fail and give one of the good SG's hemroids sitting on the bench?

or

Trade a SG away to fill a hole?

or

Sign another SG just for the LULZ?

Like I said in another post, if they don't want to come here they don't want to. But I have a feeling within a season or two they will. So every negative ninny, chill out and be patient. We won 12 games last season, it's all up from there. I'm all in 100%, go nets!!!

Haslem wants to stay in Miami. Scola wants to stay in Houston. Those are the guys we need to go after, but don't think 'we screwed the pooch' if they choose otherwise.

I think this is the right way to build a team, drafting, trading and signing solid players. I have no problem with anything this franchise has done. Yes some of the players are overpaid but this season so is everybody. That's just the way it is. Even the players we signed are still young and have room to grow. Avery Johnson is going to start from scratch with all these players and work form the bottom up. This team will play defense and compete every night, that's all you could ask for. A purpose and direction, teaching all these young players the game, the right way. Not expecting them to be or do things they will never be capable of doing, just get better as players, fundamentally and not make mistakes. Turnovers and lapses in defense can lose a game very easily. Lets hope those issues will go away with Johnson at the helm. I think adding either Scola who I read does not want to come here. Or Haslem, who might because he will get more money from the Nets and might not want to be a caddy for the Three Queens. Either one would add stability to the PF position and let Favors develop without too much pressure. All this negativity toward the team, I just don't understand. Favors played 5 summer league games and he's a bust already, that's pretty moronic to even suggest that, especially at 18 years old.

Favors's defense and overall basketball IQ is the problem right now more than his offesive skillset. He's often out of position or is taking silly fouls. He's not blocking or altering many shots out there , or grabbing as many rebounds as he should.

He's not even ready to be a backup in the league yet imo. So if they do pick up Scola for like 4 years it would be fine. He can slide into a backup role after Humphries leaves and go from there.

Favors is raw as hell, and isn't ready to be an NBA PF. He's only a year removed from HS and is just 19 years old. He's struggling to score right now in the NBA SUMMER LEAGUE, which has no veteran players. It's obvious he needs to develop behind a player that can play now. I say we offer Scola 14 million per season, and sign Fisher/Farmar for around 4-5 million per season and still have 10 million for mid season flexibility/next off season. If we started the season with Harris, TWill, Outlaw, Scola and Lopez with Favors, Lee, D. james, Petro and Fisher/Farmar coming off the bench, I would be happy.

If Favors averages 12 points 10 rebounds 2 blocks and 23 minutes per game his first year that is way better than what we had last year.

What is this whole thing we need a PF that is good? We already have Favors I say lets just get another guy like Petro who can eat up minutes and has NBA expirence and let Favors grow into the player he can be. All we need now is a backup PF and backup PG.

I'm thinking the Morrow offer will be matched, just as Tyrus's was. After all, they are good players and decent or excellent values. We'll keep the turkey contracts (Outlaw, Petro).

We never offered Thomas, Woj got that report wrong, the Bobcats signed him straight up. As for Morrow, the Warriors don't really have a need for him with the way Reggie Williams is playing, and they could use the money after giving the big contact to David Lee, so who knows, it might not get picked up...
