Summer League Game 5 Recap, AKA “Why We Should All Be Excited About Derrick Favors”

In the fifth and final game of summer league, the Nets enjoyed their easiest victory yet, securing a winning record by defeating a depleted Boston Celtics roster 86-68. Despite Luke Harangody’s excellent play (18 points & 8 rebounds) and the absence of Damion James and Terrence Williams (who sat for the game after a short stint in the first), the Nets had a great all-around game from start to finish. Many of the role players played well – Jakim Donaldson was active all game and finished with 15 points on 5-6 shooting from both the field and the line, Brandon Heath showed off an impressive touch, and Connor Atchley attacked the boards – this fifth summer league game was won because of the excellent play of the guy we’ve all been waiting for to break out: Derrick Favors. Let’s see what it was he did so well.

Obviously, Derrick Favors was the star of this game. He finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, easily his best game of summer league. His previous high for points was 12, and he had 13 in the second quarter alone. The first thing that you could see in this game is that Favors was immediately more aggressive. He was looking for his shot right away, both taking mid-range jumpers and attacking in the post. Kudos to Popeye Jones, who must have gotten in his ear and told him to attack, attack, attack. His jumper was not falling, and it didn’t look pretty – most of his misses were of the brick variety and the only one he did make was a bank shot that I’m sure he did not call. But when he got down in the post, he was visibly more aggressive and looking to put the ball in the basket. In the video below are five of his post moves that resulted in scores. They all look great, and the last two are the most impressive. You see him ripping the ball across his body and instantly attacking from a faceup position over two defenders for a layup off the backboard. On the next move he executes a perfect spin move for an athletic reverse. The and-1 is also a pretty play – he gets hit as he’s going up but is able to maintain control and will the ball into the basket. (Correction: had the wrong video up originally. Fixed now to include final move.)

The most important thing to take away from this is that Favors both showed an excellent feel for the post and also did not turn the ball over once all game. While he had been plagued by traveling issues in the post in the previous four games, Favors’s aggressiveness helped out tremendously with this and it’s a very good sign that he was able to finish this strong. If he can work on tweaking the flaws in his jumper, he can be a dangerous asset much sooner than expected. However, one concern to keep in mind is that all five moves were from the left block, where he is obviously more comfortable. Hopefully this is only trivial, but it would be good to see him making shots out of the right side as well.

Now, the best part of this game was a two-minute stretch in the second quarter where the Nets made four dunks on four offensive possessions. One was by Jakim Donaldson on a fast break, but the other three were by Favors, and all of them were great to watch. The first one is the first video in this post, and it’s a monster – he plants his feet far from the basket and rises over Slava Kravtsov for a huge two-handed flush. The commentators immediately named it the best dunk of Summer League, and I agree. Below are the other two – the first one is a nice two-hander off a feed, and the second one is a huge one-handed dunk from the left side. Like the poster, it really shows off his elite athleticism.

Favors was also aggressive defensively, often showing on pick & rolls and rotating effectively back to his man before any lanes opened up. He was snaring rebounds high off the rim, getting excellent position and bringing them down strong. He looked far more comfortable in this game than he had all of Summer League, and it’s a good sign moving forward that he was able to show off his skill level.

Now, the other players: As noted previously, Jakim Donaldson had another quietly good game – he was attacking at all times and taking smart shots. After his impressive play this week I expect an invite to training camp for him. Connor Atchley also showed off his aggressiveness a few times, although his offensive game wasn’t pretty – he only shot 4-11 and threw up a couple of airballs in the process. Brian Zoubek had a very forgettable game. I was rooting for him to make the team out of summer league, but he looked nailed to the floor on defense and was completely lost offensively. On one play in the first quarter, he had post position with 2 seconds left on the shot clock and decided to kick it out instead of looking for his own shot. This resulted in a shot-clock violation. The Petro signing today should effectively end Zoubek’s chances at making the team out of training camp, although his “make-good” contract assures him an invite at the very least. Tweety Carter and Ben Heath were both solid, showing a sound ability to run the game and take good shots while setting up the post players well.

All in all, this was by far the best all-around game for the Nets, and it came with Terrence Williams sitting the last 35 minutes and Damion James out with a thumb injury. I don’t think the two are connected – those are two of the best players on the summer league roster – but it’s a very good sign that the other guys (read: Derrick Favors) were able to step it up.

I think we're going after Haslem. Scola is going to cost too much to pry away from Houston.

We'll need to offer $11 million per year. I'd be ok with that, if Scola will agree to a 1 year deal, but I don't see why he's do that.

Haslem at 3 years and 20 million. We're also competing with Dallas at that same offer.

Re D Favors: What most commentaries miss is that the kid played for a terribly coached Georgia Tech team, similar to Lance Stephenson's college situation and that he is 19 years old. Put those two factors together and and the highlight quickness of feet and jumping quickness and you will have an entirely different player after mid-season.

@LJ23 - Farmar is a backup point guard , nothing more. I'm sure he could run point for Miami Trice or a team with 4 all-stars and they would live with him there , but that's a different ball game. New Jersey is a much different circumstance. Not sure why they would trade Harris and downgrade and leave themselves with only one point guard (Twill isn't a point).

i would hate to lose harris. but if we could get granger, i definitley would love that. and even if harris stays, farmar would be a good back up. we could use his experience playing for a championship team...

i also forgot damion james but who do u think we would need to give up including harris for granger maybe outlaw then have granger an james at the 3

tht might happen maybe to indaina for granger we would have to give up some more but think like

farmar,twill,
courtney lee, anthony morrow if sign
granger,outlaw
favors humphries
lopez,petro

thts a rlly nice starting 5

Nice @yoyo, so you think this means Harris will be traded?

They will beg to get Yi back.
Isiah Thomas will be the new GM.

Ha.

Apparently we're getting Jordan Farmar for 3 years - 12 million.

Out of all of these summer league players, who do you think will make the final NBA Nets roster for this upcoming season? (Excluding TWill, Favors, and Damion James, they are locks) How many are we allowed to have?

What is the status on getting a PF? Will we start with Humphries, beg for Yi back, sign Scola, or do something different?

While I am at it, what is the status on our new GM?

It's a marathon not a sprint. You play hard every game and never give one away. Because at the end of the season you never know who gets hurt, who gets fired, which teams fall apart and so many other possibilities. Just worry about your team and give it 100%, 100% of the time. Play hard, play smart and play to win. At the end you might just be surprised at who remains standing. And that goes for life, not only sports. Go Nets!!!!

@JK that was Jakim Donaldson. I really liked his showing in summer league, I hope the Nets invite him to camp.

yoyo - the knicks are going to be horrible we have way more talent then them, if brook breaks out alittle more and devin plays like he did when he had an all star year and all of the role players like outlaw and t will do there job there should be no reason why we couldn't push for a playoff spot

@yoyo-- that's pretty much it. If we get Scola and everything goes near-perfectly we have a chance to slip in at 40 victories.

The Knicks got better , they'll probably nab the 8th seed if Charlotte falters. Indiana looks like they could take a run at the 8th with people coming back from injuries + impact rookies. Philly looks improved. The Nets? Not so much (roster as of now).

The addition of Scola could get them close. (assuming Outlaw plays out of his mind , the coaches do a brilliant job , and Twill is as good as we think he could be).

hbj aren't you forgetting about the cavs? Their chances at making the playoffs got to be low now.

lol @ yoyo... we can make the playoffs. out of all the teams that made it last year, they all probably will be back except for charlotte. charlotte was the 7th seed last year. They just lost felton. we are better than them. we can get into that 8th seed (because chicago definitley wont be an 8th seed this year)

Lol @hbj725

Playoffs ? Playoffs ? *in Jim Mora's voice*

LJ23 u are absolutley right. cousins and avery will not have worked. that would have exploded. favors is humble. he will listen...

@ Big D- I like what u said earlier. We have to stop focusing on who we can get and grow who we have. I have to get over the disappointment of this summer. We have some real good pieces. Brook Lopez is entering his 3rd year. The 3rd year is usually the time when players careers began to really take off. And he is finally going to be playing for a good coach and in a good system. Im excited about our young guys. F#*k lebron, wade, bosh, overpaid amare, boozer, j. johnson and lee. We are getting in the playoffs this upcoming season...

another reason why cousins would have been bad for the nets.

Sorry for sending the message twice. the computer is bugging out...

@LJ23- avery is a little bit of a dictator. but i honestly think a young team needs that. he has to command that respet. they have to respect him. he has a lot to teach. and if they dont follow directions, they wont learn. i dont think he will be as much of a dictator as he was in dallas. i think he learned some lessons. but i am glad that he is letting everyone know who is running the show. this is what the nets lacked last year

I have a feeling that Avery is the reason why Thorn left as well. This guy is going to hurt the Nets to get a good GM because he is on a f****king power trip.

Why doesn't one of you blogger guys like Sebastian Pruti or Mark make a post about GM possiblities that is our biggest need at the moment. I am starting have doubts about Avery Johnson as he is the reason why Jeff Bower didn't take the job. He basically said he doesn't want him there. Who the f****k is Avery? He is a damn coach he better not start acting like he is the whole team little s&*t.

nice work Devin! Favors actually is starting to remind me of Jermaine Oneal actually... but in a good way. He played really great Friday. I was very impressed. I like his spacing and timing especially. I think some of his shots were lucky but in time he will really develop that soft touch around the rim. -
-
Derrick will have games were he gets 3 point and 5 rebounds in the NBA but in time he will become more consistent. By year 2 and 3 he will have figured it out. All in all I like him!

That's better, that's the right attitude. Give this time, Rome wasn't built in a day. We have the right coach and a bevy of solid talented, athletic and young players. Let Avery do his job and let this team grow into itself. No such thing as instant success, it never works. It takes time for a team to come together and learn each others habits and court idiosyncrasies. Some players are going to have to learn from scratch because they have developed poor habits from poor coaching. Give it time and enjoy the ride, this is something special.

sam mitchell also helped develop kg and bosh. I think he can really help favors and lopez

Change doesn't come in a day people stop thinkingthe nets are winning it all Let coach Avery get the players we have ready in his system and develop the dudes we do have and wins will eventuallyhappen. Americans have no patients

Who was that pulling down the rebound in the middle of 3 guys in dunk #2? That's more impressive to me....Nevertheless still a nice showing.

@JDoc, semantics, talent, athleticism, whatever. IMO we have BOTH. Lopez and Harris are the center pieces. Harris has already been an all star, people seem to forget that. Lopez is 22 and by the time he's 25 he'll be the man, a 20/10 allstar and hopefully Favors will too. Add some talented wings and good solid backups and you have a winner. That's is exactly what we are doing. If you can score 15 points a night in the NBA and you're about 24 years old you have talent. If you really work hard you can maybe do more. But do more as in scoring or do more in playing better defense, passing and as Ray Allen said about joining the Celtics becoming a more efficient scorer. All NAB players need work on their fundamentals, that's an issue especially for the mediocre team. They have talent, they have athletic players, they have guys who can put up 30 points. But it's all about the little things like diving for loose balls, fighting through screens, hitting the open man not just with a pass but a good pass were he likes it. That means knowing your fellow players and taking the time to learn how to make them better. It's a lot of work and the teams that do it are the same teams you see every year in the finals or come close to it.

Great write-up. It was nice to see that video of Favors' post up moves. 5 bucket, 5 different moves. Turnaround jumper, left hook, right hook, face up drive to a layup, and quick spin into a reverse layup. The hook shots didn't look pretty but I know he has a decent hook shot.

I wish Favors had touches like this every game here. TWill was busy trying to win MVP, though. -___-

Glad he finished it off on a good note, though.

There's a difference between a lot of talent and a lot of athleticism. We have athletes, with developing skills. Basketball IQ, ball skills, court vision, etc. That's the difference between being just an athlete, and being a star.

Stromile Swift was one of the most athletic players ever to play in the NBA. John Stockton was one of the greatest players, even during the Magic, MJ, Malone era. Tell me who'd you rather have.

I agree we need to develop our own players, but don't go so far to call us talented. We've got upside. Potential. Guys who can do stuff that others physically can't. Harnessing all that ability into a basketball player. That's asking an awful lot. Hopefully Avery Johnson can get the most out of even a few of these guys, and then we can talk playoffs.

I'm rooting for it. But, be real.

d fav will be an elite player in this league. I went to the same high school as he did. The more touches he gets the better he gets. Even though im a hawk fan and wish we could have keep derrick in his home state nets fans u have nothin to worry about. The man will simply be the best big man in the world in two years trust nets fan.

Lets stop this stuff, worrying and thinking about CP3 and Melo and that low and this player and that player. If they come here great, if not fine. I don't care. All I care about is that Avery Johnson takes the players we have and weeds out the ones who will not play the right way. Once that's done and those players are shipped out we can keep filling those holes through the draft, trades and free agency. If it's CP3 the injury or Melo the punk so be it. But I just want to see a team that plays good defense, plays team oriented by passing to the open man and have a good half court game getting the ball to the low post but be able to run when we have the opportunity to especially in transition. Do that and we will win a lot of games and get into the playoffs with even slightly better then mediocre talent. The lack of fundamentals and team play in the NBA is a glaringly obvious issue. If your team does that it will beat more talented teams. Since in fact WE DO have a lot of talent, just playing the right way will bring us many victories. We should be looking forward to some good solid basketball and not worry about stars who have won nothing. So far all Miami won was free agency. I have a feeling things will not go as good or be as easy as they think. By jettisoning Yi we have gotten better, addition by subtraction. We have added some good pieces all young, athletic and with upside. Go Nets.

in order to get melo next year we need to offer him more than just money. we have to show him that we can offer him a supporting cast that can help him get a ring. we have to make the playoffs this year to show him that. even if its only the eigth seed. we can prove ourselves to be a great supporting cast to a superstar. he wants to play in ny. we can offer him brooklyn in 2012 along with a chance to win....

The most interesting man in the world is a net Fan, keep thirsty my friends.

CP3, 2012. Not the same agency, but the same marketing group.

Either way. You don't avoid players based on the representation.

Lebron, showed the character flaw. The truth is, Miami dumped their entire roster to get these guys. They were blessed by having Pat Riley, and Dwayne Wade.

They won't have room for 4 max guys. Truthfully depending on next years CBA, the Heat could be in serious trouble. Say they don't get Haslem or Miller or Fisher and are forced to used scrubs. They get eliminated by a still strong Boston team or Orlando this season. The new CBA next year takes away their ability to add any "exceptions". They're stuck with a 3 headed monster and no depth. We land Carmelo. Chicago continues to grow... We continue to grow....

Karma will swoop down and stomp out the Heat and Lebron goes down as the biggest chump in NBA history.

Bottom line if we get a shot at CP3 or Melo, we gotta take it. If not, we'll keep on growing until we land our own lottery ticket to the promised land.

I cant believe i spelled speed the way i did in the above message...

I say keep Zoubek as a 3rd string center. He can help fill out the roster. I cant wait for avery johnson and sam mitchell to get a hold to favors. They are going to mold this guy. Our athleticism and spead is going to be crazy this year. williams, d. james, favors, outlaw, and even lee. people forget that even courtney lee has great athleticism. He dunked on lebron in the playoffs his rookie year in orlando.

Anyone know the length of CP3's current contract. I know there has been plenty of talk about trying to obtain him. Thing is he just recently, within the last day or 2 signed on with Lebrons agency, apparently the same that handles Bosh and Wade. It's LMR whatever. I believe it was put together by Lebrons people. If this is truly the case.. I would reconsider. talent or no it could be trouble..

well said big daddy.. stock up wit the bigs , get young guys who can still develop under a great coach .. sit and watch them grow .. should be exciting

@ JDoc that's the plan. He's going to be at the least a solid 18/8 and hopefully a 20/10 player within a season or 2. He's lucky in that he has a superior 7 foot center to cover his back. Also a coach who will stress getting the ball into the low post were he and Lopez will make life for other teams difficult. Things are looking good!!!! Zoubek is like any other rookie, confused and unsure of himself. He's well coached and that will come out in time. He may spend the first season on the inactive list but I have a feeling in time he will be a good backup. It feels good to possibly have a future with four 7 foot players that can play on your squad. You'll need that to match up with the better teams come playoff time. As the the Celtic and Lakers proved. Just as every championship team in the history of the NBA has proven. Were looking for big men with some skills. Even just to give some minutes, not to score but to play defense, give some hard fouls and protect the paint, rebound and make life miserable for the other team's bigs. That takes a lot of pressure of the shoulders of Lopez. The Spurs moved Tim Duncan to the PF just for that reason, same for Dirk. Favors and Lopez, that's going to be an unmatched one-two punch only the Lakers have with Gasol and Bynum. That's right now, ours will take a little longer and might be even better. two 20/10 guys who don't get in each others way, it's going to be fun to watch the growth of this team. LeBron who? Honestly yes if Bron-Bron and Bosh had signed with us we probably would be a championship team for the next 5-6 years but they didn't, so that's life.

@JDoc-- I always thought the Nets looked helpless against the Hawks. Now we can probably run & leap with them.

We might be the most athletic team north of South Beach. If we can get our fundamentals and skills a bit more refined, we can be very very dangerous for years to come.
