Wojnarowski: Nets Sign Jordan Farmar For $12 Million Over Three Years

Adrian Wojnarowski brings the news again, this time from his twitter feed:

New Jersey has finalized a three-year, $12 million agreement with Lakers free agent guard Jordan Farmar, a league source tells Y!

I am putting together my thoughts on this for a post tomorrow, but the initial reaction is that I like it.  I liked Felton more, but it was obvious that he wanted to start (and he wanted starter money).  The Farmar deal is reasonable to me, and his athletic ability fits into how the Nets are currently building their roster (defend and get in transition).  With Farmar being coached by Avery Johnson, he could be a solid defender.  This is an open thread to get you until tomorrow morning…feel free to discuss this move and other rumored moves.

This is a horrible signing by the Nets. He was on the Lakers full of talent which leaves players like him wide open and he still couldnt produce. They overpaid for Farmer no one else in the league would have gave him 12 mil over 3 years. Hes garbage

I like Ezra's idea. Brook would Love being paired with Kevin Love. We need a rebounding demon, and he's cheap at 3 million per.
T-Wolves would likely force Al Jefferson on us, but they have a glut in the frontcourt now.
How about Al Harrington? He can put up 25-30 on any given night, and maybe Avery could get him to rebound and defend a little. He's a good team guy at this point and a good compliment mentor to Favors no?

@HBJ

Look at the options. You have Favors developing. By next year he should be a starter. In this class you don't have a lot of positive options left, as Scola is a long shot.

Giving an 80 million dollar deal to Boozer or Lee, would have swallowed our cap space. We chose not to go the route of over spending on them.

So that means we're all in on Favors. If he develops, we're in great shape. If he doesn't, we're not going to find an answer.

We can go after Al Horford next year, but after him the options are limited and given the way Atlanta pursued Johnson on a max deal, I expect them to at least match anything we'd offer Horford.

So essentially it's the same as Scola. If we weren't going to offer 5 and 80 for Boozer, we're not offering 3 and 33 for Scola.

So do we bite the bullet and try and be a playoff team by overpaying a moderate guy, or do we concede defeat and lose for another 2 or 3 years, while Favors develops?

That's the question. Personally, I'd rather go for it, with a reasonably structured deal on a guy like Haslem. Front load it, and trade him once Favors is ready to take over.

Maybe make the playoffs this season (big maybe), or next season (less of a maybe). Then in 2012, the contracts expire, and we put the pedal to the floor on free agency again to make ourselves a legit serious contender, around multiple All-Stars (Harris, Favors, Lopez) with cap space to spare or other developing young players (T-Will, Harrison Barnes?).

These moves are more about positioning and sustaining through the rough patch, while fortifying for sunnier days.

I think the big question is...
Does Net management still believe it's better to be bad then be a marginal playoff team?
If we want to compete now we need a PF. Should we use our assets in acquiring one or should we just finish in the lottery, save our ammo and wait for Favors to mature?
Tough call...

AKwame Brown.

Hey, he's 6'11" and athletic enough to be a number one pick. He's only 27.

Seems to be the theme.

If this happens noone should be excited, but I bet we can sign him for the 2 years 8 million Detroit signed him to a couple of years ago.

I'd almost prefer that to 20 million over 3 years for Haslem.

It would be nothing to be excited about, and you have to wonder what kind of impact that will have on Favors development, but I could force myself to be ok with that kind of acquisition.

And with that, all my credibility just went out the window as a basketball fan.

JDoc i defintely feel what u are saying. I would love to get a power forward for 3 years in order to let favors grow. My only concern is that atwhat cost are willing to pay to get a temporary PF. are we willing to give up young talented players and future draft picks? Or are we willing to give up a lot of the remaining 1 million we have in cap space? Both of those options worry me if we dont get the right guy...

JDoc, even if we win 3x more, it's still 36 wins. Almost anything would be an upgrade from last year. 15 wins is still technically better. 25% better, in fact. Our expectations should be a bit higher, in my opinion.

a pretty good signing. now is a PF coming?

HBJ, I'm all for conservative logic, but these are tradeable contracts.

I know last season was dismal, but this team DOES have an opportunity to be a playoff team very soon. The last major hole we need to fill is at PF.

Favors will not be ready to play this year. Come December he'll be a serviceable back up. By next year he should be a capable starter, and by year 3 he hopefully will have grown into an All-Star.

Last season we won 12 games, and we've tremendously upgraded with under the radar moves. We're deeper. Healthier. More athletic and better coached. We also have a dimension we haven't had since Kittles in a strong 3 point shooter.

Very confusing time to be a Nets fan, and that's saying a mouthful. It's like the Nets are in a Chinese takeout, ordering players off the menu. One from column A , one form column B etc. It's almost hilarious that we still are looking for a PF. Hopefully Favors works out over the summer and comes into preseason stronger and faster. I guess the Nets will still be that lovable underdog team for a few more years. Too bad Dell Curry isn't still playing. We could've signed him and had the Farmar and the Dell". Ouch...

i'd rather strike out on PF's than overpay and settle...

@yo-yo

They're both 3 year deals for Haslem. It's not more years in Dallas. Dallas did re-sign Haywood, and are also after Mahini, and then Dampier's in the fold.

Far from settled. But, this Dallas wrinkle does make it harder on the Nets. We may strike out on PF's.

haslem is 30 years old and undersized. i think thats too much money for him

Haslem would start here for at least one year , likely two , maybe even 3 if Favors never comes along. But Dallas is also in the mix. They offered him a 5 year deal.

THE DECISION -

Miami Trice - winning
Dallas - winning and money
Nets - losing and money

@Nets Love I'm just not convinced that Favors is going to be a real viable starter for another year or two. Anyhow, having a good 3 man rotation of big guys is a good thing. Better to be able to always have 2 of the 3 out there than needing to play Hump or Petro big minutes, right?

We're going after Haslem. We already offered 3 years at 20 million to Haslem. Haslem wants to return to Miami. So he's deciding between taking less money and playing out of position or on the bench on Team SuperVillain in South Beach, but likely winning another championship for the team he considers home.

Or, he's going to take the money and come here. Haslem is the guy we've targeted though. I agree wtih it, because while I like Scola more, I know that we're not going to get him.

I like the move but don't love it. Having family who are religious Lakers fan, I have watched a good deal of Farmar both at UCLA and the Lakers. He is an upgrade over Dooling and it is better than paying Felton starter money to be Harris's backup. Still he does chuck up too many shots, and once he makes one he won't stop shooting, no matter how many misses he has. Even so, he is a pesky defender and has championship experience and knows how to win, which is something the Nets desperately need.

Suns are signing childress for the same if not less than what we paid for Outlaw. I think Outlaw is a better fit, but I think we overpaid/gave him too many years.

What I like about our offseason so far is that for every guy we got rid of, we upgraded to a better, younger more athletic player:

Outlaw & D. James are huge upgrades from Jarvis Hayes and Bobby Simmons at the small forward position. Hayes and Simmons are 2 out of shape guys who look like they are nailed to the floor. They do not have any speed or athleticism.

Anthony Morrow is a huge upgrade from CDR. Morrow is a deadly sharp shooter. Most nights CDR couldnt hit that big bill board of Jay Z and Proky. Let alone hit the rim.

Farmar is a better shooter and better defender than Dooling. He is also faster and more athletic than him as well. Phil Jackson put Farmar on Rondo in the finals to try and slow him down. Rondo won the battle. But Farmar did a pretty decent job on him.

And I will take Favors over Yi everyday of the week. i dont care how raw Favors is, Yi is a bum...

Like LJ23, the only move I dont like so far is signing petro...

i love the farmar move. this guy is still young and still has an upside. in the triangle offense, they wanted him to merely be a spot up shooter for kobe. they wanted him him to be for kobe what john paxon and steve kerr was for jordan. but this kid has more skills than kerr or paxon. he wants to be more than a spot up shooter. and on our team, he will be. this is a good move: 4 mill a year for a 24 year old, athletic player coming off of 3 final appearances and 2 championships. good move for the nets. he is a definite upgrade from keyon dooling...

@Will PF is next now they can offer Scola whatever they want. Houston said they would match whatever the Nets offer. We'll see. They are signing these guys to 3 year contracts which is nothing. I like this move as well. So far the only move I have a question about is Petro. I think Farmar will make Harris play better because he knows that there is a good PG behind him.

The triangle is brutal on point guards. It makes then nothing more then another player. But who is short and must defend the other teams PG. I bet that's one reason Fisher is bolting to join Miami so he can do his thing for the three queens. I have seen Farmar play well and then disappear, sure you would too in the triangle with Kobe. What this means is that during a 48 minute game there will be no drop off. Avery Johnson can use players without worrying about the team getting behind. He does not have to over use players by giving them too many minutes. That goes a long way to having them fresh especially for a playoff push and in the playoffs. This is the correct way to build a team. I have a feeling there will be a trade for a PF, probably a sign and trade of some kind. This is going to be a very hard team to play, 48 minutes of quality basketball is hard for any team to match. Practices are going to be competitive and intense. Go Nets!!!

Farmar has said that he wanted to compete for a starting job. I thought he could have had that in Indiana.

Is Devin Harris on the block?

Don't hate it. Don't love it.

Pros:
- Fits under the 3 year viability plan. If he doesn't do well, I'm sure he will be great trade bait in 2 years along with Petro as expiring contracts. If he isn't even traded, at least the cap space is there for 2013 and the Nets can keep it for 2014 (when LeBroshWade all can potentially free themselves).
- Harris WILL get injured this season. Almost a guarantee. Farmar will play important minutes when needed. He is also pretty athletic, which again fits the mold of the recent signings we've had.

Cons:
- Farmer has disappearing acts for the Lakers. I've watched maybe 15, 20 of their games last season and he's only shown up in maybe 8 or 9? He needs to be more consistent.
- Not a strong floor leader. But maybe because, like Manuel said, the system he was in wasn't oriented for him.

why are we filling out our roster with too much money for too many years? And where the hell is our pf!

i like it lots of upside and super athletic, and might suprise everybody since the triangle is not point guard friendly and the lakers dont like to run!

Sean Marks should be a good candidate to ride the bench at PF. Energy minutes, not only on the floor but with the towel waving credentials :D

@gabe damn man worst basketball player in the league? thhats a bit harsh. did he like not high five you while going to the locker room one day or didnt give u an autograph. lmao. and have u heard of josh boone, hamed haddadi, matt carool, brian scalebraine (i love this guy tho)those are horrible players

Pricey for an averge backup player , but I can live with it (like the Petro signing). They have to get another PF on the team regardless if it is a starter or a 3rd string guy in case of injuries or foul trouble.

I could see a scenario - Scola twists an ankle. Favors comes in and picks up 5 fouls in 5 minutes (ha , rookies) ..... they need another guy to thow at PF or center just in case. Bring back Boone for the minimum and let him ride the pine like Ross?

I like it. This guy has a lot of crunch time minutes, which will be invaluable to a team like the Nets.

ehhh i really hope the nets are up to something. Farmar is probably the worst basketball player in the league. I never got this "Jewish Jordan" crap.. If this is the best the jews got... oy vey...

so if the first year of the contract is worth $4 mil then our current cap space should be like 15 mil approximately. so 5 mil left to spend according to the plan to keep 10 mil left for the season. now for PF whos it lookin like?

@Erza
Why would you want Kevin Love? He is a young power forward.I feel like he could hinder the development of Favors both by shunting his playing time but also by not providing a veteran influence. I like the Farmar signing, and it gives a viable backup and pushes Twill to the shooting guard position which suits him far better. I expect to make a run for Scola who is older(30) and can mentor Favors on post moves and help him work on an outside jumper as Scola slowly heads towards the bench/retirement.

i love the move. hes gonna be a good back up for devin. great shooter with championship experience. still young and athletic. potential to be better especially since he is out of the triangle offense which isnt PG friendly.

What's the chance this means a trade is on its way? Can someone please say Kevin Love?
