Daily Link: TWill a Negative on Favors?

Nets fans and observers who think Terrence Williams may be best suited as trade bait for a starting quality power forward got some more fuel for their fire in a Marc Spears column over at Yahoo! Spears suggests that #3 Draft Pick Derrick Favors was one of the “losers” of the Summer League, but it really wasn’t his fault:

The third pick in the draft averaged just seven shots in the New Jersey Nets’ first four summer league games in Orlando because teammate Terrence Williams(notes) was busy hoisting away. Williams, the Nets’ second-year guard, averaged 19 shots a game.

When the Nets limited Williams to just four minutes in their finale, Favors went for 23 points and 11 rebounds while making 10 of his 17 shots. If the Nets could do it over, they might want to feature Favors a little more prominently.

I didn’t get to watch too much of the summer league this year because I’m not a league pass guy, so maybe Sebastian and Devin can chime in over here, but it seems a little premature to say that it was solely TWill who affected Favors’ performance. I just have to wonder if some of these writers are being set up by Nets brass to go negative on TWill to make a trade of his a bit more acceptable as it seems inevitable.

Summer league is a guards game. The big men must establish themselves by being ball hogs and not playing a team concept. So it hurts some players who are trying to fit in with their teammates. As soon as TWill and James saw less minutes Favors broke out, 2+2=4. Does it mean TWill should be traded NO!!!!!!!! It means that's the Summer League, that's all.

this is so stupid this is almost the most stupid thing i've seen. First T Will should not be traded.. Second T Will is not a point guard ofcourse he didn't get the ball to Favors where he needed it. This is just silly the Nets don't have a point guard they haven't had one since Kidd left. Devin is a Shooting Point, and T Will is a Swing man. If there is trade bait Trade Harris and Lee for a real point guard.

SUMMER LEAGUE! ENOUGH SAID!

Idk Mark, I think people are trying to read way too much into everything. Adding one dimensional role players won't make a talent like TWill expendable. He was our lottery pick last year and showed great promise, I don't get how adding guys like Farmar, Morrow or Outlaw make him expendable at all.

Hmm, with Al Jefferson and Michael Beasley being moved for draft picks and salary relief, what makes us think the Nets need to give up ANY player to get a PF?

We've got cap space and oodles of draft picks.

summer league is a guards game. you cant really fault TWill. I would put the blame on Popeye, h didnt run enough plays for Favors in the beginning. I watched every game.

I agree but C Lee doesnt have nearly the same trade value as TWill (especially b/c he is 2 yrs older; means he is more likely to have peaked than TWill.) TWill, while not the defender that C Lee is, is clearly a more versitile player.

Just one more thing here. Courtney Lee is almost two full years older than Terrence Williams.

Now, I happen to like Courtney Lee and his all around game. But there is no way on earth that I would trade Williams straight up for a 25 year old Courtney Lee.

If I'm the Nets, Lee is the guy I want to trade for a PF, even if I have to include a draft pick to sweeten the deal.

Averaging 19 shots a game? If you're MJ or AI then I guess that's excusable. 19 shots a game when you have a big guy down low in need of a good entry pass... trade TWill. I don't see him making any solid contributions. Volume shooters, in my opinion, never contribute to the team's overall progress.

If a team was going to trade a player, why would management want the media to make negative comments about how a player fits into their long term plans? It makes no sense b/c you would hurt his trade value. I agree that TWill is probably their second biggest trade asset behind Devin (Lopez is the only player on the team who is untouchable) bc of his perceived potential and while I would like to see the Nets keep TWill some times it's best to sell/trade your assets (assuming you get something good in return) while perception is high and the potential is still unknown. If he really is 3rd on the depth chart at the 1, 2 & 3 and would only get 5-10 minutes a game maybe it is better to trade him for someone who can contribute more night in and night out. If they think they can get Josh Smith from Atl or Landry from Sac maybe it makes some sense b/c we still don't know how Favors is going to develop. We can't just assume he will be a star. There has to be a plan B as well. Proky loves to have plans a, b and c just in case.

1. Isn't on the coaching staff to tell T-Will what they want him doing out there? Does Spears think that they were begging Williams to feed the post, but that he was refusing to do so?

2. Please cut it out with the crap about how T Will has already reached his full potential. It's ridiculous to say that just because Williams came out as a legit college senior, that he has little or no room to improve from his rookie year. It was his ROOKIE YEAR. 23 year old rookies improve all the time into their 2nd, 3rd and 4th seasons, and beyond. It's not like the kid is a raw product - like most ultra-athletic freshmen who come into the league - and needs to learn the game from scratch. His game is pretty damn advanced already. He doesn't need to learn to play, he just needs some polish - work on his J, get more comfortable in some of his decisions, etc. To pretend that he's maxed out his potential already after a couple of months of getting serious minutes in the league is silly.

3. I don't think that this team's need for someone to hold the fort for Favors is so great, or so urgent, that they ought to rush to trade this kid. As deep as they appear to be at the 2/3, they don't exactly have a bunch of superstars at those spots. I really wish they'd give this group the season and see who shakes out of there. Williams, to me, looks like the most versatile, explosive, and dynamic wing that they have. A good coaching staff will find ways to use a weapon like that.

I dunno, I think there's an element of short-sidedness to Mark Spears' analysis. He was trying to compare Cousins to Favors... a comparison that even in the best of worlds, goes to Cousins for the next two to three years. The Nets drafted Favors hoping that he would be the more dynamic player in 2012 not 2010. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the Nets didn't "limit Williams to four minutes" wasn't he hurt?

i know twill's only a sophomore but considering his age it's a stretch to talk about his potential at this point. his strengths are literally everything but his scoring -- dude is a great passer, hits the boards hard and has the body/athleticism of an elite defender. his offensive game is just not that efficient and age 23 or 24 i feel like what we saw last season is more or less what we have. all that said i think twill is better than literally every player we signed this summer and i want him on the team, but once the season starts i really hope he doesn't start putting up 10 shots/game.

@andres... I was on the record yesterday in saying I think trading TWill is a bad idea, but back-to-back days he's got some bad press related to how he fits in to the future of this team. The Nets biggest free agent acquisitions were two wings and a backup PG - positions TWill can play... I just feel we're being set up here by something... would love to be wrong.

T-Will WAS pretty awful in Summer League. He filled the stat sheets up but he also hogged the ball, took bad shots, and didn't look like a veteran presence trying to make his new teammates more comfortable.

With that said, there's so much potential there that it doesn't make sense to trade him unless he is part of a package that nets a real superstar.

I mean, now we're reading into this that it's the Nets telling Spears to write this to dis TWill. Wow. Just Wow.

And Dave D is the ONLY beat writer to even mention the possibility of trading TWill (not reporting, not quoting sources, just giving some silly reasons). But we're calling a potential trade "inevitable". SMH

"Inevitable"? Jesus Chris, this nonsense is getting worse and worse.

Well TWill didn't make Favors commit all those fouls or stop him from grabbing rebounds or prevent him from making a bigger impact on the defensive end
