Derrick Favors & Georgia Tech’s Offensive Issues

Transcript after the jump.

I assume you read the title, so there’s no use waiting. Let’s get right to it.

First, I’d like to take a look at some video from the Duke-Georgia Tech game – the ACC Championship. It was clear from the get-go that the Yellow Jackets were making a concerted effort to get Favors the ball, but their inability to feed the post was evident early on. There are many examples of the little mistakes that their guards make when trying to set up their post players. In this first one, you see Favors calling the play himself – he points over to Peacock on the block and tells him to slide over so he can set up a pick and roll with guard D’Andre Bell. As he sets the pick, his defender flashes up to guard the ballhandler far too quickly. Favors recognizes this mistake right away and rolls to the basket, but Bell throws the pass too far down and Favors loses what would have been an easy dunk.

On this next play, Favors will come up to the high post to set a screen for Shumpert, but Shumpert surprises Favors by throwing a lazy pass instead. The pass is picked off by a floating Jon Scheyer, who drives all the way back for an easy layup while Shumpert jogs and watches.

Here, you’ll see Favors getting to the low block and establishing solid position on the smaller Lance Thomas. Shumpert tries to throw Favors a quick bounce pass, but it is too far to the left and ends up in the hands of Nolan Smith, who drives to the other end of the floor for an easy layup.

Before you think I’m just cherry-picking the three worst examples from this game, just know this: these three turnovers occurred in the first two minutes of the ACC Championship. That’s right, the first two. The Yellow Jackets ended this game with 17 turnovers, and many of them were silly mistakes just like these three. To compare, Duke only committed 10 turnovers, and in a game decided by four points, those seven possessions make all the difference.

Right now I’d like to take a look at what I think is the clearest example of Tech’s inability to include Derrick Favors on offense. On this possession, he gets good post position down low. He’s squared up on the same side as the ball and he’s looking for the pass. It’s defensible that Udofia doesn’t pass him the ball here, since D’Andre Bell is on the right side and the man can easily go help down, but the offense could have been created through Derrick in the post here. Instead, let’s see what happens.

The ball gets kicked back out, and Derrick sets a screen for Bell, clearing him from the right side. Now there’s no reason not to kick him the ball. He’s got a great seal and his extending his arm towards the basket, which would allow him to spin and finish right at the rim. However, Udofia decides that an easy dunk is simply not worth it, and opts instead for a pick and roll at the top with Gani Lawal. Udofia rolls to the left side and Derrick follows him, getting great position for the third time. he’s right in Udofia’s field of view, and Udofia picks up the ball to pass. Is he going to pass to Derrick?

… Of course not.

Udofia tries an ill-advised lob pass to Lawal down low, which he is barely able to catch. He then tries a spin move and throws a layup over two defenders, which promptly bricks and sends the offense the other way.

This is an awful offensive possession for Georgia Tech and shows exactly what the problem is. Derrick Favors, who’s a great talent, who’s a top-5 pick in the draft, has post position three times, and the point guard simply refuses to give him the ball. Instead, he opts to give the ball to a guy who’s not in position, and has to throw an ill-advised pass to get it there. It just doesn’t make sense.

These kind of plays were common in Georgia Tech’s offense. Between shooting quick contested shots, not finding Favors when he’s open at the rim, throwing entry passes away, and flat-out refusing to exploit his mismatches, Tech failed Derrick Favors time and time again. As a big man, you’re naturally reliant on your guards to get you the ball, and when they aren’t doing it on a consistent basis, your numbers are going to suffer. I can’t wait until Favors gets on the floor with NBA-level creators like Jordan Farmar & former All-Star Devin Harris and he realizes just how easy the game of basketball is supposed to be.

In part 2, I’ll take a look at how Favors was able to produce with the ball in his hands, and what sort of offensive repertoire we can expect from him next season.

this is why I think Favors will be a future all-star. With Devin feeding him the ball and the interior passing he can do with Brook down low. We could have a Gasol/Bynum thing going on in NJ. I say put Favors in as a starter and see what he does. If he makes mistakes? so what? what do we have to lose? Give the dude a chance.

All you had to do is watch 5 minutes of a Ramblin Wreck game to see that Favors was rarely an option. If you watched Cincinnati play, it was the same with Lance Stephenson.

Favors will be a beast in the pros. He is just 19, has tremendously quick feet and hops and his body will grow. He might be the best choice in the draft in two years.

my question is: why did ga tech's coach allow his guards to get away with this...

Once again what you seen at tech was waisted talent. The guards on the didn want to give d fav. Take in or leave it derrick favors will be a dominate force in the nba.

Excellent-- another topic for us to flame each other on! Now, if only DeMarcus Cousins could rap... :)

Jay-Z sucks?You crazy biatch!Jayz has had some of the best rap songs ever.

haha true, unfortunately Jay-Z does suck. Kanye and Cudi ftw

Also-- to feel young, listen to some badass hip-hop. No, Jay-Z doesn't count (because of the suckage).

"Is that asking too much?"
Hey, I lived in Chicago for 20 years--ask a Cubs fans. But, then, Cubs fans deserve it :)
Anyway, hang in there for 5 more years and we got it (knocks wood, throws salt over shoulder, sacrifices goat)

Correction; You sound young. I'm old
and don't like it. They shoot old Nets fans, don't they? No blindfold, just one championship in the NBA. Is that asking for too much?

@CAT;
You sound so much younger then your posts. I envy you. The reason I'm so serious about the Nets winning in the next few years, is that I might not be around much longer. Yeah... hard to believe... but time does run out... But who cares... Lets go Nets...

Wow, Mike, the Virginia Squires? I guess there is a longer-standing Nets fan than me on this board--by about 3 years, grandpa!

@fro;
We all have to go thru this, or something like this. It's called life. Sports should be the least of our worries. I may be the biggest
idiot of all time, and if I'm am I'm sorry, but it was my time, and I really do love the Nets...

Mike...I'm sorry you've had to go through all of this. I've only been a Nets fan since I was 12 or 13 (7, 8 years ago?) when I first started following the NBA. Thank you for your dedication!!
=====
I wish we had some footage of Favors playing full contact practices with the team. The fact he played with TWill who wasn't really pass-first minded at all hasn't showcased his abilities one bit.

I will take the bait clk;
The only fault in your expert analysis... is that Cousins is the better player, much better. But don't let reality get in your way...
P.S. Learn to spell end.

Put it this way if Favors had John Wall on his team, they would go 1 and 2 in the draft, then there would be no talk about taking D COUSINS AHEAD OF D FAVORS, IN OF DISCUSSION.

"And it burns, and burns. that ring of fire... that ring of fire"

I'm been a Nets fan when DR. J. was a Virginia Squire. Yeah I'm old, but the fire still burns...

I've been a Nets fan since they got rid of Vince Carter. I'm hardcore.

P.S. I been a Nets fan longer then you been alive. Not bragging, just fact.

I'm sorry LJ23;
But so many posters never say what that mean, and don't mean what they say. My remarks never leave no doubt. I'm a man, and proud of it!

@Mike you a POed Cavs fan?You sound like it.Sorry about Lebron

@LJ23;
Walk like a man, talk like a man. What's your point? Or is that your game? Pointless?

Dont worry nets fans. Derrick will be phenomenal. I grew up with sticks aka derrick favors you guys have a dwight howard with better offense. Nets fans your blessed

Great pro-analysis! Hoping for a big year from Favors.

@Mike how about the Nets trade 3 sheep and 1 cow for CP3?

@Devin Jon Barry already said this when Favors was drafted.

Screw CP3. Stop coveting other teams players. Get your own!

CP3 will be a Knick. Why don't the Nets offer New Orleans everything?

Back to reality..."Maybe AK-47 would do better then Humphries?" AK-47 would be the star of our team!

Wait a minute... I'm quitting before you guys. Last one out shut the lights...

If you're done with the blog Yung_Freezy .... at least go out with an epic meltdown like Big Daddy in the Scola thread.

Back to AK-47 , I think it would have been a good move if we didn't get Outlaw. I don't think he's a very good PF which is what we need now I guess. Maybe he'd do better than Humphries , so I wouldn't say no way.

LMFAO You made my day yoyo. I'm done with this blog. Moving on!!!

Did you just call me sensitive ?
-
"Do we always have to get a comment from a pessimist? Stop acting like a chick and complaining about every damn topic. We had a ****** year and now we won’t duplicate it with all the new POSITIVE people in the Nets organization."
-
This blog is great.

Someone sounds angry. Chillax yoyo! Its just friendly banter. You have the right to your opinion as do I. You just gave me something to do while things got boring @ work. If you were born in NJ you can't be to sensitive online like that. I won't call you names anymore. ;)

I still love you guys, all of you, cause your Nets fans. There are so few of us.
---------------------
Should we pursue AK-47? I say why not. What are we going to do with all our surplus cap space anyway?
It's only money and his contract is up next year? What do you guys think?

Boys... settle down. There is only one Mike. I don't hide under other names.
@JDoc;"I just don’t like general put downs of the team without any real basis or point of view".
------------------------
This team was 12-70 last year. What other evidence do you need? And my put downs aren't general. They are specific. I respect your views and opinions, seriously, but you are the one calling me all sorts of names.
I don't mind but don't start crying if someone hits back.

For the record the internet makes my grammar terrible.

@yoyo

Read it again. I said Mike's views were short sighted and ignorant of the future.

I used your points and Patrick's points and a counter to his, to show that you could be a Devil's Advocate without blanketly saying the team sucks, and everything they do is wrong.

It's the difference between whining and constructive criticism.

So as I said. I praised you and Patrick, and told Mike to follow your lead, and stop lumping himself in with you.

Read up along here, where I actually defend you against the other posters.

I'm not saying I'm always in agreement with you, but I can see that your at least basing your opinion has some form of an insight to it.

It's not just blanket management bashing because Cousins and Yi were the only way the Nets were ever going to win a title.

I beleive I read in the Scola thread you mentioned my name with Patrick .... calling me short sighted , ignorant , and annoying. But maybe my reading comprehesion isn't so good.

@yoyo

I called Mike ignorant. I actually praised you. Unless you're the same guy.

I'm welcoming of different opinions. I just don't like general put downs of the team without any real basis or point of view.

@Yung_Freezy. You're are going to have to get used to posts that aren't always positive. We are fans , but sometimes armchair analysists , skeptics , critics , wishful thinkers , etc. Nobody is exactly like yourself. I run the spectrum and my views change from time to time. But you should worry about yourself more than others and how you react to things. Kinda like how Favors did in the video or failed to react , ha. I have Big Daddy calling me a kid and other negatine ninnies , you calling me a whiner , and JDoc calling me ignorant and some other things. I mean , wow. Relax guys.

Yeah yoyo, just wait until November, then you can panic with all the rest of us. Meanwhile enjoy the summer party. Don't worry... be Happy! LOL

@yoyo! When I saw the comments this morning all I read were good stuff till I got to yours. Focus on the positives is all. Knit pick when the season starts. HE IS ONLY 19!!! He will have the right coaches around him to improve. All of this is a process. You have to work harder to get to each level. Once you get into the NBA you have more assets around you to improve. We all want the best for the NETS. Just relax till November comes.

Who is that player on the Nets that is going to make Favors better? Just asking... Harris has been knocked for his play making abilities and lackluster passing skills. Maybe AJ
gets Devin to improve as a play making PG. Favors should concentrate
on rebounding and defense first. Offense will come later. Junk baskets and an occasional jumper will due for now. We have plenty of time. Time is the one thing we can count on.

Some of you guys are acting like the Georgia Tech point guards are the same quality as an NBA point guard.

NBA players who make passes that are this sloppy will be riding the pine, which is why T-Will is probably not going to be a starter. Derrick Favors CAN count on NBA players who are going to make him better, that is why great players come into the League because it is the best competition on the planet for basketball.

He did seem to do that pretty well JDoc , I'll agree.

But Taj 'Freaking' Gibson, wouldn't have gotten to those balls either.

The positive light on Favors showed his recognition of the half court set and his ability to position himself in a good scoring zone.
