Daily Link: Bargains and Overpays for Nets

In an interesting piece on ESPN Insider (subscribers only folks), Tom Haberstroh looks at this summer’s best and worst contracts and the Nets make it for one of each. As a bargain, Haberstroh lists Anthony Morrow, who the Nets signed for 3 years/$12 million:

It’s tough to imagine why the Warriors have no interest in retaining a cheap, young commodity such as Morrow, but then again, we are talking about the Warriors. In New Jersey, Morrow joins a crowded perimeter with Courtney Lee and Terrence Williams on the wing, but it would make a lot of sense for the Nets to deal Williams to a team willing to stomach his erratic play.

As for an overpay, as many readers here have posted, Travis Outlaw and his 5 year/$35 million contract are listed, though despite being on a “best” and “worst” list, Haberstroh offers a wishy-washy response for the Outlaw signing:

Paying $35 million for a veteran bench player won’t cripple a franchise’s cap flexibility, but the length and dollars could be particularly dangerous for the rebuilding Nets organization.

And not that I’m personally in love with the money Outlaw got (though I like him as a player), if we’re talking about overpaying for the SF position, how does that absurd contract Rudy Gay got not get a mention?

Joe Johnson was by far the worse free agent signing. He got more money than anyone, and he is only a jump shooter. Remind me of another $100M overpaid player Allen Houston. Johnson wasnt even a top 5 talent in this group. James, Wade, Bosh, Stoudamire, Boozer, Lee are all better and more. JOhnson is getting $4M more per year that Gay. Atl should have let him walk and saved money for Horford etc. JJ aint bringing you to the promised land.

I'm not so sure Gay is "overpaid" in their eyes for what they want. He may be worth the extra bones to them because he helps sell tickets and merchandise.

Um, *they have Xavier Henry holding out*

Bonus Grizzly stupidity: after waaaay overpaying for Gay (and not even waiting for other teams to make him an offer which they could match), they not have Xavier Henry holding out because they are low-balling him by about $300,000. That is, less than 1/100th of what they *over*paid for Gay.
If you ever think the Nets are a terribly run team, just remember the Grizzlies and T-Wolves.

NAS is right. Gay is way overpaid considering his production. Outlaw is a wild card he hits big shots and game winners. Gay.... not so much

How "healthy" is CP3? How much would we have to give up? Would he sign an extension with us? Does AJ and King want him? So many question marks?????????????

cp3 would make the nets a 40 -45 win team.

I'm happy about the Boozer and Lee non-signings. I didn't want either of those guys. Not at the 16 million a year price tag, they signed at.

Haslem. He just went home. The only team he's ever played for added 2 superstars to the 1 they already had. Good for him.

@NJINME;
Yeah, I agree with your assessment of the Boozer,Lee,Haslem etc. fiasco at the PF position. It seemed the Nets were not sure of themselves. That's no surprise since our point man Thorn, was half way out the door. Plus we really don't know how much power Proky's internal management team had in the process. But, sometimes the moves you don't make are the best one's in the end. Lets hope so.

The Bulls are paying Luol Deng $9 million a year. Put that in perspective. We're overpaying a little, because I'd be shocked if we get Deng production out of Outlaw.

They're both 6-9, 25 year old SF's. Deng has about 15 lbs on Outlaw.

In the same breath like the article says. This isn't crippling us or killing our cap space. We need to get another max level guy in here, before Brook's contract is up so we can re-sign guys, and just pay the luxury tax, and use mid-level exceptions to fill out the rest.

If CP3 comes to the Nets which he won't but if he does come than all those players that they signed will be good. You need the star PG in the NBA.Nets should do everything they can to get CP3.He should be Plan B.

it's almost impossible in the current climate NOT to overpay for a player. I like Outlaw and welcome him to our team. Is he a stud no..he is a good component. If he plays as well as I expect than the price is reasonable. if we had gotten one of the Big three and paid thru the nose for his services and he had a mediocre year, is that a bargain? i would be more concerned about the stories coming out of Nets mgmt...how they screwed up several Free Agency deals (non deals)..the picture is one of hesitance and indecision and perhaps internal disagreement. When they didn't get the Three, they said they didn't want anyone else..then why did they pursue them in such haphazard way..Boozer, Lee, Haslem, Thomas and Scola..should make you wonder.

Yeah, we overpaid for Outlaw. What we should of done is low ball him and wait him out, and then watch him sign with another team.
I'm very happy with the Outlaw signing. We wanted him and got him.
Plus he plays SF and we really had no one at that position, other then D.James. When we signed Morrow there where reports that we overpaid him also. Both are very good signings and I got a hunch that at least one of our 4 free agents is going to breakout this season. I'm betting it's Outlaw followed by Morrow.

Vince Carter was a nice move but not great and two years too late.Had Vince came in in 2002 than we would be talking about the champion Nets in 2002 2003 and 2004.

Same old Nets overpaying for scrubs.Thorn came in made some good moves than starting in 2004 he just made bad move after bad move. The best move he made was drafting Brook but we'll see if he becomes the player everyone says he is going to be.Farmar and Morrow were pretty good signings than there is Outlaw and Petro. Why didn't they just let Billy King come in on July 1st and make the moves he wanted to?

Good work ESPN, don't comment at all on say, the player's ability or fit with the team.

AND more TWill trade talk...great

Rudy Gay was probably the worst max contract of the year. Either him or Joe Johnson.
