Nets Of the Round Table VIII: Franchise Player, Rookie To Watch, Chris Paul

Obviously, this is a New Jersey Nets blog, however, the NAS crew absolutely love the NBA in general. So, every week, Sebastian, Mark, Devin, and myself will answer questions regarding the L.

1) If you were an NBA GM and your owner mandated multiple titles in the next five years, and you had a choice of any player to build your franchise around, who would it be?

Sebastian: It has to be Kevin Durant.  I’m not saying he is the best player in the league (though he will be soon), but when building a team, I don’t think there is anyone better.  Not only is Durant a superstar, but he is a guy who does things the right way and he is a good teammate.

Mark: Well, up until a few weeks ago, I would have said LeBron James, because he struck me as the multi-talented do-it-all guy who could carry a team on his back and beat you in so many different ways. I guess he still is, but now that his talents are in South Beach with the Superfriends, it’s clear he doesn’t have the alpha dog gene and I want my building block to be a cold blooded killer… which given how the game has changed doesn’t leave me with many players to pick anymore. For the sake of making a choice, let me go with who I think is going to be next season’s MVP and say Kevin Durant. He’s a unique player who finds ways to score without having the kiss of death “Next Jordan” moniker or the egomania of Superfriends.

Devin: It hurts me to say it, but the answer is LeBron James. It’s possible that somebody like Kevin Durant becomes the Russell to his Chamberlain, but everything I said in my LeBron James FA Targets piece still holds true, regardless of how creepy free agency seems now. LeBron is the most talented basketball player walking this earth right now and at 25 he’s entering his prime years. If he doesn’t win multiple championships, especially now with his current line-up, he becomes the “biggest” loser in NBA History. I just don’t see that happening.

DV: I know that he’s “old” and by year five, he might not even be playing anymore, but I’d take my chances with Kobe Bryant.  (Awaits the boos at the choice).  Bryant is hands down the only closer with that crazy desire to win now that LeBron James went down to South Beach, thinking that he needs Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to win championships.  Because of that, he loses testicular fortitude points, which is something you want in a franchise player.

I don’t think there can be any argument that Kobe doesn’t want NBA titles, he needs them.  I believe that he has two more years of being a dominant player, followed by two more years of being very good to excellent.  I think by then his experience will help his teammates and the team – the wily veteran factor, if you will.  There is no doubt that LeBron is the best talent, but Kobe is the best player.  Over five years, particularly at the beginning, I think Kobe can will himself and his team a couple of titles.

2) Which rookie are you most excited to see once the 2010-11 NBA season begins… besides John Wall?

Sebastian: I am excited to watch both our rookies, James and Favors.  I am excited to see James work and play defense against some of the best players in the NBA.  I am really excited to see Favors play with Brook, working off the high post, cutting, and getting some big dunks.

Mark: I’ll go with a guy who’s been getting buzz because of the Summer League and say Jeremy Lin. What’s not to like here? An undrafted kid from Harvard who lights up the summer league playing in the offense-heavy Golden State system? I’m dying to see how this turns out.

Devin: Definitely John…Damnit, you caught me! Well, considering my post yesterday on Derrick Favors, it’s obvious that he’s the guy I’ve been studying most. However, I’m also very intrigued to see how DeMarcus Cousins plays in his first season. Outside of his clear talent, he’s also got a chip on his shoulder bigger than him & how that translates to the NBA is going to be a wild story.

DV: Being Asian-American, I have to say Jeremy Lin.  Do I think the Golden State signing is part-gimmick to appease the huge Asian population in the Bay Area?   Yes, totally.  However, Lin has some skills and can hoop… not just as an Asian, but as a person.  I’m going to be pulling for him, despite the fact that he’ll probably spend most of his time on the pine.  There will be a lot of pressure for Lin to represent Asian-Americans and that is no easy task to take on.  Of course, he really owes Asian-Americans nothing, and I hope the pressure doesn’t get to him and he actually excels.

3) Rumors are swirling that Chris Paul wants to be traded with the Lakers, Knicks, and Magic being the primary desirable destinations for him… does CP3 get traded and, if so, to whom?

Sebastian: He doesn’t get traded.  The team’s he wants to get moved do simply don’t have enough to offer to make trading your superstar point guard worth it.  Paul is still under contract and if the Hornets deal him, they are basically guaranteeing themselves a ticket out of New Orleans.  I don’t think anyone wants that.

Mark: Being in the NYC media market my guess is we’re going to see a LOT of CP3 to Knicks rumors (we already are), but as was the case with the LeBron situation last month, I don’t see how a deal is made there given what the Knicks have to offer. I can see it happening in Orlando, as they have some nice assets and an expiring contract in Vince Carter that could help even out some salaries for NOLA.

Devin: It’s almost impossible to predict this, so I’ll instead choose my favorite. Out of the three most possible teams, I’d most like to see him on the Magic. No disrespect to Jameer Nelson, who’s a very good point guard, but a core of Howard-Lewis-Carter-Paul is absolutely terrifying for opposing defenses (and offenses). The battles between Miami and Orlando would be approaching warfare. That would be AMAZING basketball. Of course, the Lakers would have the same effect: replace their obvious weak link in the starting lineup with the best point guard in the NBA when healthy.

That being said, I want to throw an extra thought out there. In this offseason, the NBA has turned into a psych ward, and the inmates are running the asylum. Three superstars conspired to create “The Dyna3″ in Miami. Chris Paul is demanding a trade to one of two powerhouses or to New York with Carmelo Anthony. Fewer and fewer teams are becoming relevant as friendships and player demands weaken the force of parity. We’re going to see a lot of exciting basketball over the next year from the top five/ten teams, but the bottom 20 are going to be scrounging for scraps. With a lockout looming, many teams are gearing up for what looks like one more shot – and once we get to the second round of the playoffs, a lot of fun is going to begin. But don’t be surprised if many of the first 86-89 games are marred by ugliness.

DV:Unfortunately for NOLA, I see a trade happening.  There is so much happening there that obviously doesn’t appease Paul and I can see the organization breaking and giving in to the trade demands.  Luckily they have Darren Collison who is primed and ready to take Paul’s spot and since they won’t contend, especially out West, why not acquire young pieces/draft picks and think long-term?  Orlando makes the most sense as a trade partner, so if it happens, think about the beauty of a CP3/Dwight Howard pick and roll.  Devastating.  And, I think it happens.

Kevin durant; who was the second pick?(Turner); and you cant blame cp3 for not condidering us so im gonna say NY.( That hurted)!

I want to have fun and say that the NBA is planning to shut down the small market teams and replace them with teams in paris, london, within 8 years ... You get the picture. The NBA is bailing out on America and its a reflection of how greedy our culture has become that we dont respect our country enough to acknowledge who built it anymore. The players and league officials forgot that the league was built on teams like portland , utah, detroit, ...fans who felt like there city can stand up to any city cause they had chance to be the best in a major sport. The NBA will have about 14 teams in America the other 16 will be foriegn. Im with Mike on this one I think greed is taking over.

Geez, Mike, don't let it get to you... once the season starts we'll have the usual panorama of tight defensive games, emerging stars, crazy plays, head cases, vets making comebacks, fired coaches, and game-winning three-pointers. The play's the thing.

Nothing lasts for ever... Nothing...

Soon the NBA will be asking the Federal Government for a bail-out package. NBA's days are numbered. Greed took over...

I have been watching all sports for a very long time. I have never seen the lunatics take over the asylum like in the NBA. The goose that killed the golden egg. The NBA will be battling the NHL for ratings soon. Americans contrary to popular belief don't believe in royalty. King James, off with his head... The NBA is beoming like pro-wrestling, minus the class...

Screw Chris Paul... Here today gone tomorrow...

@jdoc makes sense but the knicks are desperate.get what I mean?

Another note on the Paul rumors. He's sayinng that he wants to be dealt before the season. NY Knicks cannot trade Felton before December 15th as he is a new Free Agent signee. This would put a serious damper on them getting Paul.

One they'd have two starting PG's making a combined 22 million sitting in their line up. Plus Amare's 20 million per year, and you start to get the picture.

The Hornets are going to demand Okafor be a part of any trade. So you end up with another 11 million tacked on. That puts the Knicks at $53 million for 4 players, which will make the salary cap game fun for them.

Plus how do they bring Melo into the fold next year?

Not going to happen. The Nets meanwhile have 14 million in cap space available. Hump and Ross's expiring contracts, and loads of assets to exchange.

Devin Harris and T-Will/Favors would clearly be an enticing starting point of negotiations, and we can use Hump to get the math right. Add to it a few of our 10 draft picks over the next 3 seasons, and we can easily be a front runner in this deal. The qustion is, how do we add Melo and a Max contract to the list, with Outlaw's dedicated 7 Million. We'd have to find someone willing to pick him up for nothing, and hopefully Paul could help him have a monster season to over inflate his value.

Thoughts?

From ESPN Insider:

With word that Chris Paul is angling his way out of New Orleans, there's been talk that Emeka Okafor and the four years and $52 million he has left on his contract may be part of any such deal for Paul.

"Speculation is the Hornets would want teams to take on the lousy long-term pact of center Emaka Okafor, who has four years and $52M left," writes Marc Berman of the New York Post. "Okafor is a center the Knicks can use, but his addition negates their chances of offering Carmelo Anthony the maximum."

If the Knicks are able to trade Eddy Curry and his $11.2 million expiring contract back in a deal for Paul and Okafor, that would leave them with Okafor, Ronny Turiaf and newcomer Russian Timofey Mozgov at center -- which would be an upgraded depth chart.

But it could come at the risk of not being able to roll out the full red carpet for Anthony, as Berman notes.

Yet, we've seen LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade take less money to team up, so there's a possibility Anthony would do the same to play with Paul and Amare Stoudemire.

With Dwight Howard, Brandon Bass and Marcin Gortat at center for the Magic, another rumored destination for Paul, there isn't much room for Okafor.

Same goes for the Blazers, who have Joel Przybilla, Marcus Camby and Greg Oden.

Of course, one member of each of these trios could be traded back to New Orleans to make room for Okafor.

1) Durantula. A better leader than LeBron and easier to fit into an offense. Also: BOOOOOO! (for you, Dennis)
2) Big Cuz. He's a nonstop controversy machine. OTOH, he's also the one I never want to hear about again.
3) NO has two years to make their team good. They should get cracking and forget about trading their franchise player.

NO is very high on Collison actually. Harris would have to go, however, to partially offset those two contracts. NO wants to get rid of Okafor's contract so IF they trade CP3 you can expect whoever he gets traded to to have to take Okafor as well in my opinion. They are not giving up CP3 for nothing. He is a top 5-10 talent in the NBA. They are going to want to get younger, cut salary, and potentially get a star in return all of which is accomplished in the Nets trade say Devin, Favors, (maybe Hump and his expiring contract) and a 1st rounder for CPS and Okafor. David West is a fa next year and will be 30 or 31 so they will probably let him walk. They could develop Favors this year behind West and then let him start next year.

I thought all along the plan was to use Favors as a trade chip to be honest. I guess we will see. The problem is that the Nets only shot to get LBJ was to get CP3 forst so it would have been nice if he was more vocal sooner. Maybe then NO would have pulled the trigger assuming Thorn even reached out to NO to see if he was available.

Who says we have to take Okafur or give up Favors? Devin Harris alone is better than anything any other team can give Hornets. NEts also have plenty of very good guards and SF.No way do they give up Favors TWill maybe but not Favors and they are not taking Okafur. If the Hornets trade to the other teams they are going to get screwed.

Nets have no superstars (or should I say players with huge over/priced contracts/which therefore makes them a superstar) so i cant see this happening even though we probably have more attractive trading assets than the Knicks or Magic. In order for this trade to happen we are going to lose Favors and Harris which I am fine with, but to have to take Okafor too. Why would we take on his huge contract and hurt or financial flexibility. We are going to have to give Lopez a huge contract when his is up. Do we need to have 2 centers making $12M+? just doesnt make much sense to me.

I am extremely depressed that no one wants the Nets- Lopez is one of the top 5 best Centers in the League. He can take it strong and he has a jumper. I hope that nets can spring a solid SF in a trade for cash in pics like Grangier or Gay.

Is there hope? I am getting to the point that the golden days of J Kidd are the only things I will ever be able to hold on to to anything closely resembling a great franchise.

Im used to primadonna's they are everywhere in USA sports.I say bring CP3 to the Nets and let his skillz do da talkin.

CP3 isn't an alpha dog, and therefore, not a reliable leader in my opinion. I would prefer to get a "true" leader. He is a pu**y like his buddy LeBron. He is trying to whine his way out of NO and is looking to team with a superstar rather than try to build a team, make everyone better, and win by playing as a team. I am sick and tired of these primadonna's thinking they are bigger than the game and trying to dictate the rules to everyone. He signed a BIG extention last year, and he should honor his contract and keep his damn mouth shut.

My answers would be
-
1. Lebron James. I like his passing ability over other scoring superstars. He's a dork , but one I would take.
2. Favors 1st. Jermery Lin 2nd.
3. CP3 to Orlando.

Meanwhile....Check it out.

Sorry, you have to subscribe to insider. But it basically says that Damian James was the 2nd most impressive rookie. Favors the 11th most impressive, primarily because of what he will be and not what he is.

For the Cousins camp. Cousins was ranked 3rd, but more so because of what he already is.

Either way, it's exciting.

I understand that. But the bottom line is, the dude doesn't have a choice. If he requests a trade to get out of New Orleans, and then throws a tantrum when he arrives to his new team, suddenly he's Stephon Marburry. All talent, and no head on his shoulders.

Paul isn't going to do that. Sure, give Paul the respect of sitting down with him and selling him on the franchise. But the point being, his reported "wish-list" is really irrelevant when push comes to shove.

@JDoc I think the point is you don't want to trade for a guy that doesn't want to be here. Same reason why Hornets will trade him because why have a person on your team that is the star player and not happy?Nets need to set up that meeting and if Hornets know that the Nets have the most to offer and that key is that they will get a very good PG in Devin Harris. No other team can offer that.

It doesn't really matter what Paul want. He's under contract. He doesn't have a no trade clause. If the Nets offer the best package, N.O. should and will take it.

What's Paul going to do. Step off the plane and demand to be traded again, with a pending FA in 2 years? Riiiiiiiiight...

The bottom line is we need to offer enough to get him, but not so much that it's only for 2 years as we fall short in our dreams.

If we can get Paul here, and bring a guy like David West (probably would have to settle for Okafor) with him, we're loaded. Okafor along side Brook would be a legit front line (if we can keep Favors even better). Outlaw and James at the 3. Morrow and whomever is left between Twill and Lee at the 2.

Just make the offer. CPaul will be on board with it once he gets here, and he'll be thankful for it, once we show him that we have the pieces to win.

Queens has the Mets, Bronx has the Yankees, Manhattan has the Knicks, Staten Island has the um, and Brooklyn will have the Nets.Brooklyn is the best Brooklyn is where most famous people that come from NY come from.Manhattan is where people work and tour.Brooklyn is real.

Plus Golden Boy Productions already signed with the Barclay and Nets to bring boxing to this arena to Brooklyn where some of the greatest fighters of all time come from. They don't come from Manhattan the touristy side of NYC they come from the real NYC in Brooklyn.

That is the thing @Scrapin240 a player like Paul needs to see that once they come the rest will follow. If your young wouldn't you want to go to a team that is young all around is going to go into a new stadium like Barclays instead of going to the overrated and old MSG?I would.Knicks are old school they are in the past with an old fart owner. The Nets are fresh.

@LJ23 AS a Nets fan, this would be great, but this off-season has shown that no big FA/player really wants to come to the Nets and its a shame. Lopez is a stud, and we have some good young players. So, I stopped getting my hopes up. don't expect to ever see CP3 in a Nets uniform =( .

The Hornets would get the most from the Nets in a allstar PG in Devin youn talent and lots of picks.something no other team on his list can come close to doing.

I meant to say with Hornets permission.they need for CP3 to see that not only are the Nets going to get him players but they already have one of the youngest and most talented group already and that he can do for them what kidd did for them 10 years ago.Plus they are moving 25 minutes away to Brooklyn in a new arena in the biggest borough of NYC.

I think proky,King,Avery and Jayz should try to set up a meeting with CP3 with Hornets and convince him that the Nets are his destiny.CP3 is the most important player the Nets should try to get.
