Daily Link: So About this Chris Paul Guy

NAS linked to some rumors a few weeks that had the Nets possibly making a play for disgruntled NOLA point guard Chris Paul. Now that he’s openly demanded a trade, thanks in large part to the influence of World Wide Wes and LeFraud, the Nets, in a distant way, are getting linked to CP3 again. ESPN’s Chris Broussard says the Magic are Paul’s “preferred” destination, though the Nets could possibly make a play for him.

Two things:

1. If the Nets have to dump Derrick Favors and take on Emeka Okafor’s contract to make this deal happen, as NetsDaily is speculating, then no thanks.

2. For the sake of the NOLA franchise and the NBA, it would serve Paul right if they either kept him or shipped him to Siberia (Minnesota, I hear Kahn could use a PG). Remember when I said a few weeks ago that “Miami thrice” was going to be bad longterm for the NBA? CP3, who if you believe the Woj report is being heavily influenced by LeBron’s (no)braintrust, appears to be the first bit of fallout. This idea of concentrating all of the elite talent in the NBA into very small focal points, is going to kill whatever parity is left in the NBA. Maybe I’m speaking out of turn, but quite frankly, I’m tired as it is of the last three years of Lakers and Celtics. If I have to watch the Magic and Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals for the next six years, that might be enough for me to lose interest in this game completely. Dynasties, when they’re built through lopsided trades and players holding their teams hostage, are no fun. Sorry to be a buzzkill.

NO could take anyone we have on the entire roster except Lopez for Paul, but this isn't happening because we don't have the players or expiring contracts that NO wants for Paul, so lets all relax.
We could have swapped picks with Indy and had Granger for Harris right now, but we foolishly let that opportunity pass.
Favors reminds me of Stromile Swift and Jordan Hill.

lets be frank, theres no evidence suggesting tha chris paul will ever be the chris paul of old albe it there is no evidence that derrick favors willever be anything more than an average power foward, but can we see him play a full seeason first??? nd this trade might make us in to a contender but if its not making us in to a championship team, then y make the trade???

@Dan; "Paul is a franchise-leading MVP..." Tell that to New Orleans!
They are paying him a lot of money and he's under contract. He is also coming off a serious injury. He is still getting paid by N.O. Talk about gratitude. Twenty five years old and already a spoiled brat. I wonder how happy fans are with CP3 down in the Big Easy right about now? I know how talented he is but I still can't stomach these kind of players that try to leave for greener pastures when still under contract. Did they mistreat Paul? Did they lie or cheat him? I would not get involved with this deal. Maybe that is short sighted and stupid, but you do have to have some principals even if other teams don't. Let the Knicks or Orlando take him.

This is getting absurd - you need to be willing to give up Favors for Paul.

Think about it this way - before the 07-08 season, the Celtics traded Al Jefferson and Jeff Green as part of packages for Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Ray Allen was coming off a surgery. Kevin Garnett, while still an elite talent, was growing older and a regression in talents by the end of KG's contract seemed very plausible. At the time, Jefferson was by far the most promising Celtics player for the future, a possible franchise talent. Jeff Green was a rookie, the fifth pick of the draft, with the loads of promise that inevitably comes with drafting a player in the top 5.
Yet, all analysts would now peg these trades as a success. Jefferson, while becoming a talented player, was nowhere close to the elite status of a player like KG. And Jeff Green has gone on to become an overrated, slightly above average player in OKC (something that may change in the future if he moves to a team that will play him at SF rather than PF).
Given the Boston scenario, trading Favors for Paul should be a no-brainer. While overpaid, Okeafor is undeniably a talented rebounder and defender who is young enough so that his contract length will not likely strip his time of productivity. And Paul is a franchise-leading MVP with plenty of productive years ahead of him. Forget the surgery- if you have a chance to obtain a franchise talent you take it. These types of players change teams.

@James Make no mistake, I LOVE Chris Paul. I can honestly say that I've said he's my favorite player in the league on a fair share of surveys in the past few years. That being said, I think a lot of people are reserved (at least I'm reserved) because Paul did not look particularly strong coming off his surgery, and the surgery that he had tends to rob players of their explosiveness and athleticism over time while rubbing bone on bone in the knee. Removing the meniscus is no joke, it's not something you bounce back to playing on like you never had the surgery. It forces you to change your approach.
If he'd had a year like the previous two and still had his meniscus, I'd be all for shipping Favors out. But it doesn't make sense to take on his contract, along with Okafor's, when there's a substantial risk that he's just not going to play as effectively as we're paying for - if at all.

Ummm, you guys are nuts. You wouldn't take Chris Paul if it meant giving up on Favors?? What?! On what planet does that make sense. Chris Paul is the best point guard in the league. He's already put up some of the best seasons for a PG in NBA history, and he's only 25. 25!

He's a franchise player, the exact type of the player the Nets need to acquire and build around. You should give up the farm for him, even if it means taking on Okafor's contract. One thing that gets lost when discussing how bad of a contract he has is that Okafor is actually a fairly serviceable player when healthy.

Favors, remember, is still a prospect. He hasn't demonstrated anything at an NBA level yet (and, to be honest, he didn't demonstrate much at the college level either). When you have an opportunity to get a franchise level talent like Paul, you take it. If the Nets had a chance to get him, they'd be crazy not to do it.

i'm bullish on favors, but i would definately trade him & some of our young wings for cp3 & okafor. the only knock on cp3 is that meniscus - his body of work in nola is insane, when he's healthy he elevates that team to one of the best in the conference, which is lebron-like when you analyze that supporting cast.

that swap could turn the nets into a 50-win playoff squad overnight, and coming off a 12-win season that's important -- prok's ownership has changed the perception of the nets' organization but you have to win some games to lure top talent before the bk move. there's not a player out there (except maybe, like, monta ellis) who wouldn't love to play with paul.

What this team needs most right now is team chemistry. Guys working together and pulling together. If AJ can get these guys to mesh, then everything else becomes simpler. Lets see if guys like Outlaw and D.James take control of this team. Harris and Lopez are very good players, but in my opinion they lack leadership skills. You don't have to be the best player on the team to lead. Magic Johnson and Kobe are great players but more importantly they lead their teams. Who's are leader?

C.Paul and D.West for Devin Harris , T.Will , Favors , and a second round pick.
-
Nets
-
Chris Paul - J.Farmar
C.Lee - A.Morrow
Outlaw - D.James
David West - Hump
Brook Lopez - Petro
-
Nice 1-2-3 scoring punch with Paul/Lopez/West , + 2 good young perimeter defenders that run the floor well and shoot solid enough , + a great 3-point specialist and some bench players that will play hard and tough for Avery/Sam. The Nets probably go to the playoffs and perhaps they could swing a Melo sign and trade deal with Denver in the future to keep Paul happy and with the Nets longterm to be with Melo and Brook.
-
NO rebuilds with Collison , T.Will , and Favors mixed with vets (Okafur , Harris , and Peja) until their contracts run out or until they can dump them somewhere. They probably wouldn't be a bad team as is.
-
I really think the Nets and Hornets might consider doing something like that. The Nets are probably shopping T.Will as we speak anyway , and they would have given up Favors and Harris to get Paul earlier. New Orleans probably sees the writing on the wall with Paul.

(but) if they offered david west then id think about trading d favors

r u guys serious? i would take Okafors contract in a second if it meant getting PAUL. i would definitely trade Derrick Favors for him. Favors might be Howard in a few years or he might be like most guys drafted on potential and become a bust.CP3 is 25 (in the prime of his career) and already has been the best PG in the league for the past couple of years. yeah i know Okafor has 5 years left on his contract for like 10 mil a year but i think he would be great with brook. he is a great rebounder and shot blocker and has played all 82 games for the past 3 years (so durable). his career avg is 10rebs a game with 2 blocks and 13 ppg. what would the full package that we send to the hornets have to be?

starting 5
CP3
Lee( Twill is likely traded)
Outlaw
OKafor
Brook Lopez

we would have the best PG in the league teamed up with a big man duo one of the biggest and most talented front courts in the league. with shooters around them. and CP3 is an all NBA defensive first teamer. Brook gives u 2 blocks on a game and okafor the same with AJ coaching. we would be one of the most dominant defenses as well as a very good offensive team.

CP3
Lee

First off can we stop all t-Will hating please gosh, u act like the guy wasn't a freakin rookie (with a horrible coach) so erratic play is something u should expect, not only from a rookie in that situation, but ANY ROOKIE...... but if we are forced to take back a horrible cotract and give up to much to get a creaky knee paul .......ummm no thanks but if u could get him for harris and one other player besides (lopez, favors)and a couple of picks then id do it in a heart beat

i dont want to give up too much for a player that has just come off of knee surgery. i would love if the nets can add to the team without having to take away from it. and the only way to do that is wait for the 2011 fee agency class. the squas we have, coupled with the coaching staff we have can do some damage this year...

d. Harris, humphries and twill
for c. paul and okafor.
okafor strengthens our front line and we have enough deph where we on won't miss twills eratic play

O.K. Javier... What do you think about all this warm weather we been having recently?...

We arent getting cris paul so i dont wanna discuss this any more.

I wouldn't want Chris Paul on the Nets if it means sacrificing Favors, giving up multiple 1st round picks, and taking on that Okafor contract. If it happens, it would suck. I know the Nets offseason has been REALLY boring and flaccid, but there's a plan - go young, athletic, have shooters, build around Lopez - and the Nets should stick to it. Don't get me wrong, when healthy, Chris Paul is indubitably the best PG on the planet, but bringing the baggage of shotty knees and Okafor... BLEH! Stay the course, Nets!!!

Only way I think this is a good trade is if it's a straight up trade player for player or player for maybe player and a future pick.

As for Chris Paul, (1)Will he want to play for us and sign an extension?
(2)Will he pass the physical?
(3)Can we get him without giving up Favors?
If "yes" for all 3 questions then go get him, otherwise NO.

I hope there is a lockout next season. Miami will get screwed big time. Favors will have one more year too mature and the Nets fans will get a well deserved break.
@LJ23;
Baseball is much different then basketball. In baseball 2 or 3 superstars are nice to have but they don't mean their team will win. In basketball one "superstar" can effect the teams fortunes from losers to winners over night. David Stern was clearly upset with what went down with the James gang and Miami. Watch for some major rule changes. Miami and Pat Riley
should be watched closely. I have a feeling that something "fishy" is going on down there with players seemingly signing for less
money.

Keep that front-runner off the Nets! I like him in NY. It can be the Bad Knees Knicks. These primadonnas belong in the WNBA.

No way do we give the Hornets Favors. You can have CP3.

the NBA is just following MLB it works for that sport

whatever you will all still watch the NBA though you say you won't you can't avoid it.

u are absolutley right. what's going on in the nba right now is whack. although i wasn't a fan of the chicago bulls, u had to love the way their dynasty came about. they drafter jordan. they drafted pippen. they drafted horace grant. and they brought in the right coaches to groom their players and created something beautiful. yes through their 6 rings their were trades and free agent signings. but their main core guys were all drafted and groomed by them (with the exception of rodman). there is nothing wrong with trading for a good player to bolster your roster. i didnt have a problem with bringing in gasol to play with kobe. but i dont consider gasol a top 10 player in the league. the same was with boston's big 3. none of them were top 10 players in the league (in my opinion) at th time they came together. they were all 30 years old and over. but to have 3 guys who are in the prime of their career, and are top 10 players in the league (wade and lebron are top 3 plaers in the league) is corny. i dont want to see wade and lebron play together. i want to see them play against each other.
but i you have to give chris paul a pass in this aspect, new orleans is not looking to win right now. they are looking to save money. and u can do both at the same time. so i can understand paul wanting to leave. i just hope he leaves for a team that is willing to structure a championship team around him. and not jump others bandwagons. when healthy, he is the best point guard in the game. PERIOD! so he can lead a team to a championship if given the right pieces.
