Thoughts On The Offseason

Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld.com had a post yesterday that got me thinking.  In the post he ranked the Nets at 15th, last in the Eastern Conference, his reasoning is as follows:

While the young talent in New Jersey is a few years away from making them a competitive team, the additions this offseason were puzzling and won’t help the Nets improve the product they put on the floor in the immediate future. Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, and Travis Outlaw are talented role players but they’re not the big acquisitions that Nets’ fan were hoping for when this summer started. The team wanted to make a splash after missing out on James, Wade, and Bosh but their backup plan didn’t stack up to the ones put in place in Chicago or New York. The Nets will win more than twelve games this season but they’re still a couple years away from climbing up these rankings.

After praising the Nets for their young core, Kennedy moves on to the Nets offseason’, calling their moves puzzling.  Kennedy’s reasoning is something that I have heard a lot from media members fans alike, and it is starting to bother me every time I read it (This isn’t just a personal attack on Alex Kennedy, love his stuff on Hoopsworld).  What Kennedy does is he looks at where the Nets are at, and compares them to what Nets could have been (John Wall, LeBron, or at the very least Chris Bosh) and then says “look what they could have been, they have been awful this offseason!”  They ignore the fact that the Nets have improved at just about every position while still having about $15 million in terms of cap space.

Look, the Nets have been unlucky this season, I get it.  If the Nets end up winning the #1 pick and get John Wall, they perhaps sign LeBron James and are instant contenders.  From that moment on, I assumed that LeBron wasn’t going to take his talents to Newark, and I was hoping for Chris Bosh.  However, the stars aligned an all three of the big free agents signed with the Heat.  While LeBron James (or to a certain extent Chris Bosh) on the Nets would have been fantastic, I think it is important not to judge the team the Nets have now to what could have been.  What people should be doing is looking at the Nets from game 82 of last year and compare them to where they are at now, and that is a huge improvement.

While reading this, you guys can probably guess that I have been in favor of most of the team’s signings.  The one I haven’t been is the hire of new GM Billy King.  Billy King was pretty inept as the GM of the Philadelphia 76ers before being fired by them a few years ago.  King was a surprise hire, especially with guys like Cho and Pritchard available.  However, if you think about it for a moment, the hire does make some sense.  First, there are reports that King is basically going to be a figurehead for the Nets with Avery Johnson actually calling the shots.  I am ok with that, Johnson is the man coaching the team and he knows what their style will be, so it makes sense for him to have a hand in who the team brings in (in terms of personnel).  The second thing to remember is that Billy King is basically going to be a stopgap for the Nets.  Everyone knows that Mikhail Prokhorov wants to bring in his own GM from Russia, so why will Prokhorov bring in a guy like Cho or Pritchard who would be a longterm hire?  The plan originally was going to be Rod Thorn staying aboard for another year or two and then transferring to Prokhorov’s guy.  However, Thorn’s retirement threw a wrench into the plan, and the team was forced to scramble, leading to the hiring of King.

I guess what I am getting to in this rant is that the Nets are on the right track.  Look from point A (the end of last year) to point B (right now) and the Nets are not only improved, but are younger, with cap space left over (for midseason acquisitions or next year).  While the playoffs might not be in the plan for this year, the team is on their way to being a playoff team (and maybe even a contender) two to three years down the line.

Wow, Gabe. You really put a lot of thought into the upcoming season! I think the Nets gel perfectly and Favors comes along well after the AS break, the Nets might scoot into the 7th, 8th seed (pending on how bad the rest of the East is). This is because I see a huge drop off after the Magic, Celtics, Heat, Bulls and Hawks. The Bucks might be a lock for #6, but that means 7 and 8 are up for grabs. If we can get stingy defense in a conference where offense is horrendous (Bobcats, Pistons, Wizards, Pacers), we might be onto something!

@CAT;
LMAO. Talk about day and nite. Billy Smith + "Chico" Resch. Gary "Toy Cannon" Howatt was another priceless character on that team. I loved that team, and the Islanders were the "good" guys in that golden hockey era. Wonderful G.M., Coach and team. If the Nets could ever emulate that team I would die a happy man.

@Mike-- well, "most admirable" except for Billy Smith.

P.S. For all you kids out there I'm referring to the late seventies early eighties Islander club. "Seems like yesterday, but it was long ago". Priceless....

@GABE;
Well spoken, especially about buying a championship. It's like buying a hooker. LOL
I've been watching sports teams for many years, and my favorite all time team was the NY Islanders. You watched players like Potvin, Trottier, Bossy, Gilles, Nystrom etc. come up as young players and in a few years become one of the greatest teams and most admirable ever to play the game. Priceless memories...

2gabe--"Also, how was Gerald Wallace an all-star last year? If anything he should have gotten in a few years back when he averaged something like 2 blocks 3 steals a game."
Well, I can't speak for the voters, but he did increase his rebounding and had far more minutes than ever before. Still, you make a good point-- I would have had him as an All-Star years ago.

The reason the Nets will make the playoffs? Defense, rebounding and shooting. They quietly have a complete team. Name 8 teams in the east that have better defense, or better rebounding, or better shooting. You simply cannot name 8 better in each category especially 8 teams that are better in ALL categories altogether. Most of all the nets seem to have a team mindset (finally). Something they have lacked since Kidd was traded.

In no particular order, teams with as good or better shooting than the Nets (in the East):

Knicks
Bucks
Magic
Hawks
Celtics
Pistons
I can only name these 6...
~
In no particular order, teams with as good or better defense (in the East):
Heat
Magic
Bucks
Celtics
Bobcats
76ers
Cavs
Hawks
Thats 8 but only barely. The Nets are at least (on paper) on par with half these teams. Only four are juggernauts--Heat Magic Celtics Bobcats--and I am being generous to the Heat and Bobcats. The Heat only have 3 outstanding defenders but the rest of the team is flawed. The Bobcats are basically good at defense because they can't ever win by out scoring. Their problem now is how bad will they miss Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw?
~
In no particular order, teams with as good or better rebounding (positional and team)(in the east):

Magic
Bucks
Celtics
Bulls
Heat
Hawks
Pacers

Thats all I can come up with. And the Nets will be as good or better than the Hawks Pacers and Bucks. And depending on Garnets age/knees, and Perkins injury they could be as good or better than the celtics (in the regular season). Also the Heat do not have a "rebounder" outside of Haslem. Bosh is capable but they will really have to crash the boards as a team to be better than the Nets with two good/great rebounders (at their positions) up front and amazing rebounders on the wings. Bulls and Magic are the best rebounding teams in the East in my opinion. Lakers Thunder and Spurs are the best in the west, with the Kings and Rockets dominating the boards a lot too.
~
These three categories is how I determine the Nets success next season. The media is vastly underselling them--as usual.

Let me say that every year we read these "predictions" and they are always wrong. So I decided to post my own predictions since I (luckily??) have ranked teams (plus or minus 1 slot sometimes 2) correctly over the last few years. Above was my post but let me explain some of my choices for I never pick outside of anything other than a teams components. Meaning, I dont get caught up in the hype when making my choices. I look at basic basketball needs to succeed: teamwork, rebounding, shooting, defense, and shooting. Too easy.

Below: reasons why I picked where I did.
_

Wizards: I predict the Wizards will not only be second worse in the eastern conference I also will say they will be the second worse team in the league behind the Raptors. Why?? Yes John Wall will be spectacular and help win some close games but overall lack of team concept defense and Gilberts inability to guard twos or ones effectively will put this team in a tough situation. Once/if the Wizards are this bad Gilberts trade value will be at an all time low. While I do think Gilbert has some left in the tank I just think he will suffer without the ball in his hands.
~
Nets: they will make the playoffs and prove all the media wrong. Yet somehow the media will still undersell them and the progress they made, which would be astonishing since if the Nets do make the playoffs they likely will need to have improved their team by 30 wins. Thats insane. But Im crazy enough to think they can. They have the right mindset. Something a lot of teams do not have.
~
Heat/Magic/Thunder: They will be neck and neck for the top record in the east but the Thunder will end up with the overall best record due to their team of young defenders who will be a nightmare to play against in the regular season. The Thunder simply will have more energy than most teams on a given night. That will win them many games as it did last year. I predict they improve by 6-8 games in 2011. If they ride their energy into the playoffs they can (maybe) beat the Lakers.
~
Knicks: they will win games by outscoring teams a la Diantoni's model. But they really will struggle if they dont dominate the first half. They dont have a rebounder or a great ball distributer and the whole team simply cannot play defense. Amare and Danillo might be the two worst defensive forward tandem in the NBA... oh wait Yi Jianlian Al Thorton...wait David Lee and Brendon Wright... ok its a 3 team tie. But I do think they squeeze into the playoffs.
~
Bucks: Bucks are the perfect team. If only they had a dominant power forward they could be contenders. They are super talented at all positions. And I really think Bogut could be the only center (along with Howard obviously) that is better than Lopez in the east.
~
Bobcats: they somehow got worse (on paper) from last season. Also, how was Gerald Wallace an all-star last year? If anything he should have gotten in a few years back when he averaged something like 2 blocks 3 steals a game.. Anyway they could be horrible next year but Larry Brown will at least help the team have a unified defensive mindset.
~
Bulls: not high on this team AT ALL. They still dont have shooters except one player. But that player cannot be on the floor more than 15 minutes a game because with Boozer and him on the floor together only Noah will be in the paint to stop drives. Rose over handles and isn't smart and cannot play D or shoot. Are we just impressed with his "moves" and "athleticism"? How can people honestly think this kid is that special??? Anyway, they have pieces to make the playoffs but I think anything past the first or second round would be a miracle.
~
e76ers: they suffer a lot from the same things the bulls do but I think the 76ers will be better defensively than the Bulls. And they could very well sneak into the playoffs but their front line wont scare any teams and the lack of shooting combined with their lack of bigs spells trouble. You need talented bigs or a crazy talented point guard to get open shots. If you cannot shoot and cannot even get open shot to shoot you simply cannot win unless you are loaded with all defensive caliber players.
~

Spurs: they are my dark horse contenders and I think its very possible they do win it all next year. Splitter is better than Gasol. Mark my words. Thats a huge improvement for the Spurs frontline. Huge.
~
Pistons: I have the pistons ranked low but they are actually going to be a little better this next year compared to last. Ben Gordon is really good. He cant play a lick of d but he is an important component to a team. So his health is vital to the Pistons winning a few more games this season. No chance they make the playoffs unless Villanueva starts to play D and/or Greg Monroe turns into the second coming of Chris Webber. Possible, but not likely.
~
Cavs: they will fight and fight hard for they will have fan support (surprisingly). I think Lebron leaving will reenergize this team/state. I know I know sounds backasswords but if the Cavs can win some games simply by hard work they will be cherished. However, I doubt they make the playoffs. Only way they make the playoffs is if Jamison can have a sneaky good season where opposing defenses dont recognize his contributions. Like I said, I doubt they make the playoffs.

I'm a fan of this offseason. I like being the underdog and I am ok with the media selling us short as usual. It just adds to my excitement when we defy all the haters. I am truthfully more happy we didn't land Lebron because it all felt wrong... Im a fan of building something, building a championship, not buying one--leave that shame to the Yankees.

@LJ23

I will bet you $5000 right now that the 76ers finish below the Bucks. The Bucks are a playoff team that got even better in the off-season.

They signed Corey Maggette which is a great fit for them. They were one of the lowest ranked teams in FT attempts, and Maggette is exactly the kind of slasher they needed, to remedy that. He also gives them a dynamic scorer with the ability to create a shot.

They added CDR from us. This gives them a needed bench player on the wing, who can come in and create some offense.

They brought in Drew Gooden. They needed a solid rebounder with some size. Again Gooden fits perfectly. The Bucks had a really good under the radar off-season.

Meanwhile the Sixers traded away Dalembert, and will be soft in the middle now. They have two wing players that can't play together, and they added nothing else. Collins is an overrated coach. This guy had Pippen and Jordan and couldn't win with them. Then he went on to not win with two other franchises.

What possibly has you so high on the Sixers that you're putting them 6th, where you have the Bucks 10th.

If we finish one or two spots behind the Bucks, we're a playoff team.

Yeah...too bad Roddy is gone =(

@fro-- what makes you think we would pick him if he was there? :)

1. Heat
2. Magic
3. Bulls
4. Celtics
5. Pacers
6. 76ers
7. Hawks
8. Knicks
9. Wizards
10. Bucks
11. Bobcats
12. Nets
13. Pistons
14. Cavs
15. Raptors

@JDoc you have the 76ers too low and Atlanta high.Iwould put the Nets at 11 or 12.

@CAT, it would be if there's a Kobe level talent dangling from 13-15. You never know.@Wes
=====
Did anyone else totally laugh at how they ranked the Cavs HIGHER than the Nets off season? The only acquisition they've made is Byron Scott. They've lost a hell of a lot more. LeSouthBeach, Ziggy, Shaq, Dan Ferry, Mike Brown, and a fine on Dan Gilbert. The rankings are improperly labeled as the Nets are NOT worse than the Cavs, the Sixers, or the Raptors if the season started tomorrow.
=====
, I agree that our rosters are basketballs deep. The Magic really have only one star and a bunch of people who take turns stepping it up. You can't really call Rashard Lewis, Jameer Nelson, and Vince Carter stars anymore (even though at one point, they all were individually). If we landed a superstar this summer, it would've been top 5, 6 seed at the very least.

HOOPDOCTORS.COM evaluating Travis Outlaw…
———————-
As a throw in in the Marcus Camby to Portland deal, the LA Clippers saw just how good 7 year player Outlaw really is. At only 25, Outlaw still has the potential to be one of the better SFs in the league because of an amazing amount of athleticism and excellent 3pt range. While used mostly off the bench in his time with Portland, Outlaw could project as a rebuilding team’s starter at the 3, considering he has excellent defensive skills as well. If LA doesn’t move to resign him, he should garner lots of attention as an unrestricted free agent.

It's not a bad squad. But for all the naysayers out there, there are also a bunch of us Nets fans hoping the "what if's" and "could be's" come true.

What if Outlaw plays like many of us think he can. What if Morrow takes the next step and excels as the real outside threat he appears to be. What if T-Will takes off on the track to superstardom. What if C-Lee becomes the next Ron Artest.

Too many questions. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. I say 27-32 wins is a real legit estimate. Mostly because Avery's coaching should get us 10 wins alone due to Kiki not knowing the first thing about coaching.

Not sure how paper will translate to the floor though so saying the nets are somehwere between 8-15 in the East probably isn't too far fetched..

As for King. It was a terrible signing. Purely inept on all parts and there is no rationalization for why it was done. The other GM's int he league are licking their chops to drop some awful trades on King... The signing he effs up the better... Fire him earlier rather than later..

I'm with Mike-- let's get some playoff balling in! It isn't worth missing them to have the 14th pick instead of the 15th.

Yeah; I tired of playing the lottery. Lopez, T-Will and Favors... How greedy can we get. It's time to at least try making the playoffs. Losing breeds losing. Plus it's no fun. Players get down, coaches get
pissed and fans suffer the most, since they can't do anything about it but watch. LOL

I think everyone 7-14 on MY list has a shot at the playoffs. Making the playoffs may not be a good thing.

40 wins and a sweep by the Magic, versus 38 wins and a lottery pick. Tough to say which I'd rather have. I just don't ever want to win less than 30 games again. I hope those days are behind us. Getting a guy like Kobe has kept the Lakers great for 13 years. Hopefully what we have in place plus Favors does more than the same for us.

@JDoc-- yeah, the Cavs were kind of jerry-rigged around LBJ. Really, if we traded TWill to them he'd almost be a lock for Most Improved Player, just for fitting in so well. If they could get a player of that type (Iggy?) it would make a huge difference for them.
I doubt Wall is going to win a lot of games for the Wiz this year. He's exciting, but currently way too turnover-prone to add a lot of value. And while I agree that Arenas is a more natural 2, I don't think HE thinks so. And if your two key players are a 1 and a combo guard, you've got problems.

@jdoc- great post. i just disagree with the knicks and wizards being that high. amare is playing without steve nash. and he may be better offensively than lee, he isnt a reliable rebounder. the knicks will get killed on the boards. i think the wizards will be better. but there is going to be some turmoil between wall and arenas about who's running the show...

@toasters

You might be right on the John Wall thing. I just think a good PG can really make a huge impact on a team. Look at what Kidd did for us. Deron Williams did for Utah, and Paul did for N.O.

Wall is supposed to be in that class, and more of a true PG than Rose was. The Wizards also added Hinrich who's at least a decent player. Arenas I have always thought of as a 2. His game reminds me more of Kobe's than anyone else (not on that level, but similar tool set). With the amount of time he missed last year, I think he'll be an impact player again, especially if healthy. Jamison will be missed. Again, I think their division is going to be the biggest problem, and they'll probably finish below us in the overall standings, but I wanted to give them credit, because I find them to be an intriguing team.

Regarding the Cavs. They didn't just lose Lebron. They also lost Z and Shaq, which means they'll be undersized at the 5. Mo Williams isn't a prototypical PG, he's very much shoot first. Lebron, did so much for that team. Assists, Rebounds, Scoring, Defense. I remember watching college ball when Evan Turner went out with OSU, and when he came back. Lebron is all of that on the NBA level, and then some.

I really believe that the Cavs will lose 35+ more games than last season which puts them in the mid 20's for wins. If they're a 24 win team, that's usually bottom 3 in the league let alone conference.

@ Mike

I hope you're on the money with Outlaw.

The Nets are really going to be a fun team to watch. We're definitely a sleeper playoff team. Hopefully we can turn that dream into a reality. Part of me wants no Paul trade to happen, to because I want to see how all of this looks on the court. If we're 15-13 come January, I'm going to be pretty excited.

@Mike -- Plus his name is Outlaw!! How can you not root for him. I hope he wears a headband and big sport goggles like Bo Outlaw did in NBA Live '95. :)

To find out about a player I don't know much about I find it helpful to check out that teams blogs and beat writers for their up close view and opinions. This a fairly typical view of Travis Outlaw from a Blazers fan after he signed with the Nets. Most views are very postive.

"The BBIQ issue (debatable) is a moot point. Every team needs a "Mr. 4th Quarter" who can hit clutch shots when the game is on the line. Lest any fans forget, there was a reason he got that nickname while in Portland. The Blazers lack a forward who can get his own shot, and are now in need of a long distance shooter (hopefully Babbitt). TO's still a young man who improved every year here, and a great guy with his best days ahead of him".
-
"Good luck, Travis!"

@JDoc-- Good analysis. I think you're overrating the impact of rookies, though. In the last 25 years only the Admiral, Shaq, Tim Duncan, and CP3 have had a major impact in their rookie years. Look at Derrick Rose or Kevin Durant-- through their sophomore years they aren't/weren't franchise-changers.
I think we'll be much better than the 76ers, not because Turner is or isn't all that, but because they traded away Dalembert and have no good bigs left.
We ought to be better than the Wizards because they completely gutted their roster last year, without bringing in quality replacements, and Arenas is getting old. If they win 30 games, Flip should be Coach of the Year.
I doubt we'll be better than the Cavs, unless they fall 30 or more games due to the loss of LeBron. But Mo Williams, Varejao, and Hickson are all good, and Jamison might still have something, plus they've got a deep bench.
The Raptors are in trouble, though, starting from 40 wins, losing Bosh, and the only prospective incoming talent is Boris Diaw.
I think we'll finish ahead of (worst to best) the Wizards, 76ers, Pistons, Pacers, and Raptors. I don't see any of last year's good teams (say, the Hawks or Bucks) collapsing.

Very impressive post JDoc. I think the Nets have become the poster child for worst team in the NBA and writers just go with it. If AJ can get these guys on the same page and play hard we might surprise some folks. Plus this roster we have right now may not be the same one come opening game.

P.S. For some strange reason I think I'm going to fall in love with this "new" Nets team. Hard up?... Maybe... LOL

The Hoopsworld article needs to be called an Eastern Conference Preview, more so than an Off-Season ranking.

We still have cap space to get a max player next off-season. We have pieces to make a big splash via trade. We improved at just about every position. We hired a coach who is likely the best out of the bunch of new hires, and at the very least a candidate.

How is none of this taken into account? In his writing he says the Wizards would be higher if they played in a different division. How do they have any control over that?

He gave the Hawks a ranking of 5th despite Joe Johnson's MASSIVE contract.

This list has nothing to do with the off-season. It's a preview of next season.

And even with that, I laugh at being picked last. The Bobcats lost their PG, starting Center, and two veteran role players. They're not going to be as good this year.

The Pacers didn't add anything, but their injury troubles were somehow just a last season thing, while ours were largely ignored.

The Raptors lost their star player and traded away other talent for cap space. They're ranked ahead of us, despite "counting on young players to develop". I don't get it. We have more cap space, and better young talent. How are they better off than us?

Ditto for Cleveland. They lost Lebron, and brought nothing in.

This guy has the 76ers ranked 8th!!!! They added Evan Turner who stunk in Summer League and Doug Collins, who's really never been impressive as an actual coach. He couldn't win with Michael Jordan!!! Yet, the Sixers are a playoff team?

My Eastern Conference Expectations are more like this.

1. Heat
2. Magic
3. Celtics
4. Bulls
-These are the only contenders for the record.
5. Hawks
6. Bucks
7. Knicks
8. Wizards
- I have the Knicks 7th because Amare is an upgrade over Lee, and Felton and Randolph are big upgrades. The Wizards I have here because, I'm assuming John Wall has an impact and makes everyone around him better. Gilbert Arenas is also still a talented scorer, who will be playing more this year. Their division can hurt them, but they're going to be a tough team to beat this year.

9. Pacers
10. Nets
11. Bobcats
12. 76ers
13. Pistons
14. Cavs
15. Raptors

Pacers, had injuries and still won 35 games. We won 12. So I'm going to give them the edge. The Bobcats are counting on Livingston replacing Felton. If that happens put them 8th, but I'm not so sure. The 76ers...Maybe if Brand steps up they jump us. The Pistons did nothing, and are just another year older. The Cavs and Raptors lost the centerpiece of their teams, and are now starting from scratch. They have to be thought to be last on this list.

Am I the only one high on T-Law? NBA.FANHOUSE.COM in early April was high on him and said after LeBron and Gay at SF he was a player to watch at SF. Plus he has to be one of the youngest veteran players to be signed.
====================
As for Billy King, Proky and his associates may see some useful talents that King posses. Maybe he is well connected/liked with other G.M's around the league. I still haven't figured out who's really the power behind the throne in Netsland.
=====================
As for Nets fortunes down the road, Favors, Outlaw, James, Morrow, T-Will and of course Brook
will help decide that. I omitted Devin Harris name because I have a hunch he might not be with us in 2/3 years.
