Daily Link: For Favors, It’s About Strength

In a Ben Couch interview with Derrick Favors, a common recurring theme kept coming back to the rookie’s strength and conditioning. Favors seemed pleased with his summer league performance and progress, but knows where he needs to make improvements:

NJNets.com: What did you take away from your week at Summer League in Orlando?

Derrick Favors: That I need to work a little harder, in the post, on all things. Get a little stronger.

I’m obviously pulling for the kid, but I hope given his rawness that fans cut him a little slack in his rookie season.

The Nets have lucked out with DF. He will be a big star, with terrific athleticism, quick feet and reflexes, soft hands and touch. He barely fit in with a terribly coached team last year and is but 19. It will be fun to watch him progress.

You can't compare Favors to Bosh, Chris has a tall, lanky body with not much weight on his frame, making him an offensive force but a defensive liability as well.

Favors is a real POWER forward, which is why the Duncan comparisons are more apt because he was a tall, strong kid. People scoff at this comparison but Favors and Duncan have similar freshman stats, and are both intelligent and mature for their age.

I have no idea what kind of player Favors is or will be. I just know he's coachable. But, I'm not going to compare him to Bosh at all. Who the heck knows?

@LJ23; I agree with you. But
I don't believe life is set in stone. People are capable of changing, at any time. We don't have CP3 or Kidd, we have Favors. You play the hand your dealt and hope for the best. Start feeding Favors red meat, and see what happens...

which is why CP3 would be perfect for the nets.CP3, Brook and Favors.CP3 like J Kidd makes good players great and okay players good. Not even lebron could have done that for the Nets.

@Mike you aren't going to see that in Favors. He is a Bosh kind of player.

I think maybe Favors can learn a lot from Petro. Seriously... learn to be comfortable and confident in your own skin. There's a time for "work" and there's a time to enjoy and let it all hang out. Favors got a lighten up and get loose." Too much work makes Derrick a dull boy". I can't wait to see the 1st time Derrick makes a big block or hellacious dunk, and smiles... that confident smile all winners smile.
From Jack Johnson to Jim Thorpe, to Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ali, Gretsky, Jordan etc. they had that look of I'm the best, and you know it and most of all I know it.
I want to see Favors with that look...

Petro is all about hard work , workin hard , putting the work in , and putting in work. He is a workin man that's workin hard. Favors could learn a lot from him.

whatever I think he is going to be like a Bosh type player.

Slow news day...
In comparison those Twitter Twins, T-Will = 22,000 +
CDR = 18,000 followers on Twitter. This guy Petro got some following.
Hope he plays well for us. His followers are now > 325,000. I heard
in Denver his fans show up and fill some sections together. Hope it carries over into NJ/NY.

@Matt; I though the same thing at first. Then I realized even if you were from Mars, 324,000 followers on Tweeter is still a lot. I don't think the Nets have 324,000 followers/fans. LOL... He sounds like a popular guy, for whatever that's worth. But between him and Outlaw the Nets should have a lot more fun on trips and in practices.

Petro said that twitter isnt big in France. Guess they are too busy eating cheese and trying to figure out what to do with their national "football" team.

Then again how much of those followers are french?

@Frank; Maybe, but what I'm trying to say is that the guy has played PF and done O.K.
P.S. Pretty funny excerpt from above blog I mentioned... T-Will and CDR, eat your hearts out... LOL

Frenchi27 (he'll wear 27 for the Nets too) has over 324,400 followers receiving every one of his Tweets. To show how crazy that is ... consider that Carmelo Anthony (205,000+), J.R. Smith (44,600+), Ty Lawson (29,500+), and Renaldo Balkman (2,600+) don't even combine for over 300,000 followers and you can see that something is special about Petro.

if the nets play Petro at the PF along Brook that would be a big lineup in the post and they should dominate the boards and the paint

Denver has a pretty good team. From what I read it was hard for Petro to get minutes. When K-Mart went down last season, Petro replaced him and from all accounts did well. The reason I'm posting and boasting about Petro under a Derrick Favors blog is that I wouldn't be surprised if Petro gets meaningful minutes at PF especially if Brian Zoubek makes the team. Petro might just be a more capable Josh Boone. He doesn't have to score to be effective. He rebounds and blocks
shots and might be a good compliment to Lopez. Can't wait to find out. Obviously the Nets saw something they liked when signing him...

These posts make me feel alot better about the team we have. I'm looking forward to this year. I also enjoy the posts concerning the players we DO have as opposed to might have. One thing at a time

Yeah, he finished the season well. Is that because he didn't get a shot until KMart went down? Maybe he was in Karl's doghouse before then. If that's the real Petro (as opposed to a Hump-style burst of energy when given a shot), he'll be OK.

@NJINME;
Yeah, I've seen some highlights. This boy ain't shy.I especially like the coast to coast play against Atlanta! How about that salute to the crowd after his dunk. He's still only 24. who knows...
Derrick who? LOL
Here's another take on "Petro the Great". I know a lot of you guys like stats. Check out this article...

@Mike Thanks. That was a really good article about Petro...seems he had quite a few admirers out there in Denver. Good info on Amundson too. There are a few good youtube videos on Petro. His Petro mix is a good highlight film.

@NJINME;
Funny, but on the blog I mentioned above, they do a comparison specifically between Louis Amundson and Petro. Check it out.

Either the Nets are pumping up Favors trade value or they are sincere in their belief that Favors is going to be a "star".
A little off topic, interesting blog on SB Nations Denver Stiffs board about Johan Petro.

The word is Favors is "scary" good. I'm hopeful that is the case. It would be nice to find a PF to spell some minutes, other than Hump. I'm thinking a good young backup type (Louis Amundsen?), who would grow into the backup role for Favors? Hump still is a third option off the bench. I wasn't too pleased he was more concerned about his golf game than BBall. ..from his tweets. Some of you had suggested j Boone. There is a saying "when the going get's tough, the tough get going". Well it was tough last year and he never got it going. When he played, he played as if his heart wasn't in it. I wouldn't be surprised if he was out of the league..Nice kid, no motivation

Hey guys, do you think you can enlighten me a bit on Favors' rebounding? I dunno but from his body of work in college and summer league, he's not seeming like a really really good rebounder. I don't know if it's fundamentals, or boxing out, or positioning, or IQ or what, but hasn't seemed like as good a rebounder as he should be yet

I fear expectations are MUCH to high for Favors especially since the Nets only other PF at the moment is Humphries. Fans are going to expect him to come in and make a contribution right away. I love his raw talent and athletism, but I believe he is going to get pushed around physically and be in constant foul trouble. He is 2-3 years away from making a consistant positive contribution IMO.
