Trading For A Core Player: Tony Parker

I know what you guys are thinking, “Why would we trade for an oldish injury prone point guard when we have our own (Devin actually played eight more games than Parker last year)?”  Well, this trade would be one that the Nets make during the season if the whole “Devin Harris-Avery Johnson:  Take 2″ doesn’t work out.  We have heard both Devin Harris and Avery Johnson say that they have matured since their days together in Dallas, but we aren’t going to know if things truly changed until the games are played.   Both Devin and Coach Johnson are fierce competitors and if they can’t keep a working relationship during competition it isn’t going to work.  As Nets’ fans, we have seen how a split between the players and the coach can hurt the individual’s (and most importantly the team’s performance).  CDR and T-Will both had their problems with the coaching last year and when they deal, their play was negatively bothered by it.  With Avery basically running things (I still think Billy King is just a figurehead), if Devin and Avery butt heads, Devin is going to be the one on the move.

If the Nets have to move Harris for another point guard, you can do a lot worse than Tony Parker.  He does a better job running the pick and roll than Devin Harris (which is something the Nets will do a lot of this year with Favors and Lopez so good at running the PNR), both in terms of individual scoring and team performance.  Parker tallied an individual PPP (points per possession) of .88 last year, ranking him 10th among starting PGs (Devin was 19th with a .79 PPP), and the Spurs had a PNR-Roll Man PPP of 1.03, good for 16th (Devin had the Nets at 20th with .98).  On the defensive end, Parker is worlds ahead of Devin Harris, and this might be one of the reasons Avery wants to make the deal.  Tony Parker held opponents to a PPP of .82 (ranking him 44th in the NBA), while Devin Harris allowed opponents to get a PPP of .90 (good for 204th in the NBA). Parker’s history of injury worries me a bit, but the Nets have a guy in Jordan Farmar who can step in and start if needed.

So why do the Spurs do this deal?  Well, Parker is an expiring contract and dealing him for Devin Harris saves them right around $5 million this year.  It also gives them a long term answer at PG, if the Spurs want to give up on Parker.  It might take some additional cash or picks to get the deal done, but I think the swap can be done.  There is another option as well:

Again, this deal will be based on whether or not things go well during the regular season.  This time though, it is all about the Spurs.  After Manu Ginobili at the shooting guard position, the Spurs are basically experimenting with young shooting guards/small forwards…and Richard Jefferson.  If these guys don’t perform well for the Spurs, the Nets might be able to get a guy like DeJuan Blair by including Courtney Lee (You can interchange him with T-Will here, but I think Courtney is more of a “Spurs Guy”) in the trade (again, the Nets might need to add picks or cash to finalize the deal).  Blair would be a great pickup because he can be the banger inside that the Nets need.  Also, if Derrick Favors isn’t ready  in year one, Blair is good enough to take the starter minutes (and then going back to a backup role in year two).

A deal like this probably isn’t going to happen, because I personally believe that the Avery Johnson and Devin Harris relationship isn’t going to fall apart.  If it does, they are going to need to get rid of Devin (especially coming off of a twelve win season), and they need to get a starter in return.  A deal with the Spurs provides that, and if the Spurs need an upgrade at the wing, the Nets may even be able to pull a very nice role player away from them.

if its harris and lee for blair and parker i would do that

your on crack- throw in favors for parker in maybe you got a deal

Mike I was saying if we weren't in contention. Devin harris is not our point guard of the future and if we have a shot to get two top ten picks I say take it. Personally I believe the nets could make the playoffs this year. It's just a thought. I'm not even saying I don't like Devin Harris, it's just when the nets will be championship caliber, in 2 or 3 years Harris is going to be 29-30. He's a score first-pass second type point guard and they don't age well. I'd rather him go 16 ppg and 10 assists this year, than 22 ppg and 6 assists. This is a young team that needs a strong passing point guard to dish it to them.

Honestly, DH and TP are the same player. Very similar styles. Let's see what Devin does this year before we think about trades. To me the CLEE should be on the trading block.

@Mr.Ca$h...I would rather be in contention for the playoffs then get another lottery pick. We had our share of losing last year. I wanna start winning. Lottery picks are for losers. I would rather be Pheonix, Mavericks or Utah then be flirting with the lotto every year. If we do end up with a lottery pick because we were not good enough, that's one thing, but to root for a losing record just to get a chance at who knows who is bordering on lunacy.

Could we trade devin harris halfwway threw the season to a team most likely to get a lottery pick? It would be nice if we arent in contention halfway threw the season to get a chance at 2 lottery picks. Just a thought, not saying its possible or likely

@Sebatian;
We're suppose to read the post? I thought we just had to read the headline and make up the rest...LMAO

Why trade for TP right now, it does not make sense,TP maybe 1 year older but in games played his body might be three years older because of all the playoff games played, also TP CONTRACT is more than double that of DH.And i think that this is the year that DH Turns the corner and become a true allstar, and with Jordan Farmar on board,that will push DH,to play defense for the whole time he is on the floor.

clk, did you read the post man? In it, it says that a trade like this would only happen if Avery and Devin butt heads (in the post I also said I don't think this will happen). If that does happen, then this is a trade the Nets will explore during the season...

we should have gotten blair when we had a chance in the draft instead of ryan anderson

@Justin

Blair has no ACL's. Don't go too far on that notion of the Spurs not trading him.

I guess August is "Lets get rid of Courtney Lee month" I like Courtney and I think AJ will like him to. He's not a flashy in your face fan favorite kind of player, but he does try to play the game right. High character player and of all the players on last season Nets roster, Lee was the guy who had to go from the penthouse to the outhouse in a very short period of time. In fact in the whole NBA Lee was probably "screwed" in terms of playing conditions and environment worse then any other player. I'm surprised he didn't shoot himself. LOL

Blair for C. Lee would be the biggest steal ever....Spurs would never go for that....ever.

IMO 'Core Player' denotes a guy you can build around for years to come.. by the time this team is really ready to contend with the big boys in Brooklyn Parker's best days will be well in his rearview.

i like the optomism but this web site DESPERATELY NEEDS AN INJECTION OF REALITY!!

calling harris a fierce competitor is a joke !! he whines,complains about minor ailments that would not keep other players out of the lineup--he does not have the makeup mentally to help this team win--if i know this from being frienly with people connected to this team--dont you think the rest of the league knows this?
he is ANYTHING BUT A TOUGH COMPETITOR!!why do you thingk they have been trying to deal him?
he has no longterm future on this team!!

Tony Parker is not even a top ten PG in the league, why would he be considered a core player?

I consider Tony Parker a core player because if the Devin Harris/Avery Johnson relationship doesn't work, the Nets need a starting quality PG (I mentioned this in the post).

Tony Parker is a guy the Nets can feasibly get without really giving up all of their quality young players (in my opinion). This is a deal that probable won't happen, like I said, but it is interesting to think about/discuss...

TP and DH are the same player except that Parker is older and French. TP is DEFINITELY not a core player.

And why would the Spurs take C.Lee and give us Blair? Blair is a freakishly talented (albeit undersized) forward, and Lee is a good defender but not by any means a proven shooter or scorer (yes, he nailed 40% of his threes in 2008-09, but he was on the Magic, where Dwight Howard earns his teammates many a wide open look).

As a Spurs fan, I don't see them doing a deal like this. If they are going to move Parker, why would they replace him with a worse, yet similar version who is only a year younger. A year ago Slam mag was arguing that Parker was a better PG than Chris Paul, and you think you can trade him straight up for Harris just because he had a bad year with injuries.

Wait and see what Parker's going to do this year. I don't think the Spurs do anything until they see how he comes back.

Hopefully DH can step up his leadership and play under Johnson's regime!

Lets give Devin Harris the benefit of the doubt. Last year was a horror show and Devin and Brook must of felt it more then most. Devin must know playing for the Nets now is his best chance to have his own team, and his best chance to cash in on his next contract if he plays well and the team improves. If he stays healthy and motivated I expect to see big things from D.H. this year.
As for Tony Parker, he might be one of many possible candidates
if Harris can't hack it. But I would think the Nets would go young, use Farmar or draft a PG or two in the next draft. We must not rush things right now. Stop gap measures usually don't get you any
where in the long run.
