Trading For A Core Player: Carmelo Anthony

We scheduled this Carmelo to come out on Friday this past weekend, and our timing could be any better.  While most fans were hoping that Carmelo would be available to try and trade for, that possibility just got more real this past Tuesday when Alex Kennedy tweeted that sources close to the situation said Carmelo won’t extend his contract with the Nuggets.  If the Nuggets are convinced that Carmelo will walk away from the team, they could trade him for young assets to try and rebuild their roster.  Out of all the teams with cap space to make a deal for Carmelo (and eat his salary), I think the Nets are the most attractive option.  Not only do they have young players to deal, they have plenty of draft picks and cash they can include (the best the Knicks can do is Eddy Curry’s expiring contract!).

So who would the Nets deal to get Carmelo?  Well, they can send Devin Harris, Terrence Williams, and a few draft picks to the Nuggets.  Why would the Nuggets make this move?  They get Terrence Williams (who is proving to be a hot commodity that other teams are interested in), a starting point guard in Devin Harris (which sets them up to trade Chauncey Billups’ large contract), and picks to gain some young talent.  Is it equal value for Carmelo?  Of course not, but deals like this are never really “even.”  The reason the Nuggets would trade Carmelo is that they would rather get something back then letting him leave for nothing.

So what does Carmelo do to the Nets roster?  Well, it gives them potentially one of the best front courts in the NBA, with Brook Lopez playing center, Derrick Favors playing power forward, and Carmelo playing small forward.  Sure, they will be spread a little thin in the backcourt (and might even have to sign another PG – or call one up from the D-League), but they have enough talent there to be competitive. Jordan Farmar is a capable player, and many argue that he has the talent to be a starter in this league.  At the 2 spot, you have Courtney Lee and Anthony Morrow there to split minutes.

So do Carmelo’s talents fit into this new roster?  In my opinion they do.  As Tom Haberstroh (who does great stuff) points out in an ESPN insider article, Carmelo likes to shoot in bulk.  On this team he would have to (besides the times he dumps it into Brook), and that would be alright with me.  On the defensive end, Carmelo has the potential to be a good defender, he just has never showed the commitment on that end of the court consistently.  In my opinion playing for a coach like Avery Johnson would turn him into at least a decent defender.

The final issue of this is whether or not Carmelo Anthony would want to come to New Jersey.  Why is this so important?  Well, anyone trading for Carmelo would only be doing so after signing him to an extension.  This means Carmelo can refuse to sign an extension and pretty much blow up any deal he doesn’t like.  While the Nets don’t have a 2 big time players to pair up with Carmelo, I still think he would be interested in playing for the Nets.  They are a team with young talent where he can be the leader (if he wants to be), and they are going to be moving to Brooklyn soon, and he has a chance to be the guy who ushers in that era (yeah, I know…this was my same argument for LeBron)

The Nuggets do not need a point gaurd. Billups is from Denver and will probably retire in Denver, he is on a John Elway level here. The only way New Jersey gets Melo is a ton of first round draft picks and some of their best players, minimum. Melo is a superstar. Just look at his merchandise sells and foul shots. Of course, if New Jersey were to get Melo they would probably go to the playoffs every year and Lebron gets whooped by Melo almost every time, even when the Nuggets were below average.

I say get this done ASAP if possible. This wil be a great start for the Nets because even if Melo is not the leader that people say he is, no one can deny his ability to score. Also, I think having Avery as a coach will guide him in the right direction. This will attract big names to the Nets and by the time they move to Brooklyn they are a championship contender. This is a risk i'm willing to take. GET THIS DONE!

@ gabe- i strongly disagree. melo is not a top 5 player. dont be fooled by his scoring average. read this article and u will see what im saying:

melo is not a guy that can lead a team to a title. he is a second option guy on a good team.

Guys. Carmelo Anthony is a top five player in this league. He is probably the most diverse scoring player in the league outside of Kobe Bryant. I think Carmelo is more diverse a scorer than Durant (Durant is just a much better shooter--than lots of people--and hes huge... he is like Dirk in a way). But Carmelo IS a winner. He willed his team to a championship in college. I think he is one of the few "winners" in the NBA. His best teammate for a long time has been JR Smith... I mean.. come on... Chauncey was nice while it lasted but he is getting old. Anyway, Carmelo is legit. And he would do very well with the Nets. THIS is one of only a few trades I would consider doing. Chances are that the Nuggets wait this out till midseason. The problem is, teams will be less willing to take the gamble, and the Nuggets will actually probably get worse offers. The ball would be 100% in Carmelo's court. He could simply threaten to leave. And I think he would. Lebron leaving cleveland has opened up the league for all the other players to act similarly. Sadly, I think Carmelo is going to the Knicks... I hate the knicks... ok enough rambling from me. I am a fan of Melo and I think he would fit this team (and most teams) quite well. Thats all.

The Nuggets drafted Ty Lawson for a reason...

got to reduce sg and sf positons first and get a pf

I don't want to give up Harris without getting billups also. We can't have farmar and a d leaguer as our point guards.

I think melo would be a better #2 option rather than #1. I cant see leading a team to a championship., But I can see him being a great #2 option to a big man...

I want Melo on the team, but not at the expense of T WIll. We have to let him play and see what he becomes. He has a ceiling to become an all star one day. I don't want harris traded either, but if you do trade harris, i would package him up with CLEE for melo not TWILL

IF they get Melo (a long shot imo), it would greatly improve there chances of acquiring CP3, and I believe the Nets might have the cap space to make that happen. The one problem is trading Harris and TWill, they are giving up 2 of their top 3 tradable assets (Favors being the other). I think NO is going to want more than cash and a few first rounders (which might be late first rounders) bc a starting group of lopez, favors, melo, lee, and cp3 would be one of the better starting lineups in the league.

TWill is going to be scary good

I don't want to give TWill up for Melo...this trade would benefit us offensively but not defensively. If we give Harris up I rather have CP3 and Melo with TWill and Lopez. Now make that happen! Lol

and we would give up a good PG.I think Farmar is good but can he be Devin Harris good as a starter?

nah don't like that trade.we are okay at sf and sg.

it won't happen..never

There's a good article up on ESPN that shows Melo to be quite overrated, shooting league average while jacking up more shots than most.

While I wouldn't complain if they went out and got him (he'd sell tickets and bring excitement to the team), he isn't really a championship quality player.

Make it happen Nets!! Get Melo..
