Troy Murphy Coming To New Jersey? Courtney Lee On The Way Out?

Update #2: Ben Couch reports it is official, and offers his analysis.

Update:  According To Marc J. Spears, it is a done deal:

Hou,NJ, NO, Indy trade done and trade call taking place now, source tells Y!. Hou gets C Lee, NO gets Ariza, Indy Collison-Posey, NJ Murphy

As soon as it seems the Nets are standing pat and going to let Derrick Favors be the starter to start the season, they go ahead and make a move…or least they are trying to.  Chad Ford of ESPN just tweeted:

Breaking: Hornets, Rockets, Pacers & Nets working on 4 team deal. Ariza to NO. C. Lee to HOU. Collison & Posey to IND. Murphy to NJ.

More if the deal goes through, but it seems like everyone was right in assuming that a wing was on the move.  I thought that it would take Terrence Williams to get a starting quality PF, but apparently, Courtney Lee is the guy on the way out.  I’ll take a real deep look at the deal if it ends up being official, but as it stands right now the Nets have $14 to $13 million in cap space (off the top of my head) and Courtney Lee’s deal was at $1.3.  Troy Murphy is in the final year of a $12 million dollar contract, so while the Nets eat up most of their cap space this year, they will have right around $15 million to spend next year (again these are not exact, off the top of my head calculations).  Also, looks like Sean May is out of a roster spot.

I love this trade. LOVE IT! I had already stated my hope that Courtney Lee would be moved and not T-Will. Check. Love Jersey boy Troy Murphy. He is a regular on my fantasy teams. If he had been playing in a bigger market, he would be (almost) a superstar. Great for Favors, now he won't have to start and it will keep his minutes down. Good for the Nets box office too. I am immediately going to buy a NJ Nets Troy Murphy jersey...

this is roster now
harris
twill
outlaw
murphy
lopez

its going to this after half of the season
harris
twill
d james
favors
lopez

Oh yeah, Rob Thorn good riddance. I guess you really are just a quitter and didn't want to spend all that time with your wife and family! Happy to see you go!

I must say Billy King SHOCKED me with this one! He got a dbl/dbl PF, who can stretch the floor (40% 3's), is a quality guy, will be an excellent mentor for Favors and immediate leader in the locker room, ex 1 yr has avg'd 70+ games per year, is a local guy, AND has an expiring contract that could be a VERY valuable trading chip at the deadline for CLee! Thats highway robbery! Also of importance is that they cleared out the log jam at SG and kept TWill who should now start and get significant minutes! Assuming everyone stays healthy the Nets have a legit shot at 35-40 wins and a playoff spot IMO!

Reading the ESPN article, they are still dogging the Nets.

"Troy Murphy is in the last year of his contract and could be a valuable trade piece at the deadline."

Who trades for guys like Murphy? Contenders. So if we're trading to a contender it means we're not in the playoff hunt, and what would we get back?

PF is our hole. So what would we trade Murphy for?

Plus the poll asked who got the best of this deal and only 6 percent said the Nets.

8% said the Rockets, 51% said the Pacers, and 34% said New Orleans.

We traded a guy making 1.1 million a year for a guy making 12 million a year. A 12 million that's off the books next year as we have a strong young PF developing behind him. How are we the team that got shafted, according to the votes?

Then in the comments I see Murphy getting compared to Yi! Hahaha!

I'm so excited to watch this year's team, I may even buy a direct TV package.

To all those prematurely knocking Billy King...."How do you like me now?"

I've been saying for months that Troy Murphy/David West should be the guys we target.

I liked Courtney Lee, but it's not like this guy was Ron Artest in his prime as a defender. He was very good, not lock down great. With T'Will's athleticism, I think that he can do well enough on the wing that we won't truly miss C-Lee for any reason, but sentimental value (he was the key part of the Vince deal).

This is a perfect trade for the Nets, who with Hump and Murphy's expiring contracts next year will still have room to go after a max guy, if we even want to take that chance.

Did anyone get a chance to put this into the trade machine to see how many extra wins we get out of this? I tried, but ESPN already made it official, so Murphy is on out squad.

or
PG Harris
SG Morrow
SF TWill
PF Murphy
C Lopez

starting lineup
PG Harris
SG TWill
SF Outlaw
PF Murphy
C Lopez

BTW you think the Nets are going to make another move they have 4 PF Msy,Murphy,Favors and Hump.

Plus Larry Bird loves Troy Murphy. How cant you love a PF that can shoot a three well.

Amen, Ezra: trading for Murphy >>>> Thorn's free agent 'haul.'

Don't want to enter into the Thorn debate, but it is important to note that at least in his first move, King has landed a reasonable player (even if he doesn't end up working out) for a reasonable price while maintaining flexibility (expiring contract) for future moves. More than a certain franchise across the Hudson can say...

Spare me the tears about Rod Thorn. He had 7 years to acquire a PF and Billy King got one in less then a month. Yeah, and I already heard ALL THE EXCUSES.

I'm loving all the positive comments im sad to see Clee go, people really underrated his defensive ability and how important that is but hey we have a better shot at the playoffs and thats all that matters!

Here we go guys.....
Philadelphia 76ers hire ROD THORN as President of Basketball Operations

Terrence Williams is deff more valuable Courtney lee IMO

Twill will emerge this year and the Nets will go to the playoffs. After that no promises......

Nets will win 35 with this trade and just miss out on the playoffs.

wow im sooooo impressed by this deal.
R U kidding me? we get TROY MURPHY for CLEE? Thats AMAZING
We get rid of the too many wings issue and get our PF and a quality trade chip with his large salary thats expiring.
Troy Murphy a double double guy who can stretch the floor. WOW

I think our roster is now definitely in serious contention for the 8th seed:
Harris Farmar
Morrow TWill Ross (*could be switched around)
Outlaw James
Murphy Favors Hump May?
Lopez Petro

AWESOME

Prior to TMurphy joining the Nets, I was fairly comfortable with 30-35 wins and just missing the playoffs. Now I would say 40+. I think this team will get even better as the season wears on and will peak at playoff time. I'm not predicting a championship but second rd. is very possible. Remember, they are a young team with fresh legs...

We should be fun to watch. How many good 3pt shooters did we have last year? We now have picked up 3. Three for 3... The game has changed and you need that 3pt presence in your lineup. Plus Murphy can rebound. I say it was a very smart move. The Nets can't wind up losing every year in an attempt to draft the next superstar. Time to start winning...
Wish lee the best, but I think we got the best of the deal. By the way, who replaces Troy in Indiana 's lineup? I'm not worried about who's gonna replace C.Lee..

40 wins? I think the Nets will have more than that and be in the 6th or 7th seed. Look @ this roster. You have inside game, outside threats, lots of athleticism, and once this team commits to Avery's defensive scheme we'd be tough to beat. I'm liking the staring 5 and I have high hopes on Damon James. This team has been rejuvenated and the guys from last year have a sour taste left in their mouth. We will be a problem in the east. LETS GO NETS!!!

Love the trade. Nets is doing big things baby!

Hey Sebastian are you going to change your schedule predictions?

Great deal, as long as the Nets aren't concerned about defending anyone on the wing. Sorry to see CLee go. He was much more valuable to the team than TWill, but I suspect Houston knows that already.

Why did Houston do the deal? Ariza is a more proven player than c. Lee in my opinion.

The Rockets save a ton of money, and Yahoo is reporting that they are also getting a 6 million dollar trade exception as well...

Wow. This was a steal. The Nets just improved enough to have a real shot at the playoffs this year.

I agree with Cash, I think twill can still start at the 2 because outlaw and Murphy both stretch the floor as good 3 pt shooters. Honestly I think we could be a 40 won team, with this starting 5 (which has
major possibility for upside with Harris, Williams and Lopez all with good chances to be better than last year) and farmar, morrow, James, favors, hump and petro off the bench.

I think this is a good deal. While TMurphy isn't an allstar he's a very very good PF. Would hope they could sign him longer (at a discount of course).Way to Go King/Avery! Good Luck CLee!!

Just looked up outlaw. Outlaw shoots 38% on threes. So with a starting 5 of Harris Williams outlaw Murphy and lopez gives us two three point shooters. A bench rotation of farmar, morrow, James, favors and petro gives us 2-3 three point shooters depending on James shooting ability.

I dont think they go out and get Morrow if they dont plan on starting him. I like TWill's energy coming off the bench. Great trade for the Nets

Sam good point. I didn't think about that. Williams deserves starting spot but morrow fits in better with our starters.

I wonder if this move leads to T-Will coming off the bench as the sixth man, because Harris and Williams are both pretty crummy 3 point shooters.. yes, Murphy stretches the floor, but if the starting back-court can't hit 3s, aren't they just going to put pressure on Troy instead?

I think this gives up a great bench with a lot of upside. Farmar pg morrow sg James sf favors pf petro and humphries as other big men. Then a starting 5 of Harris williams outlaw Murphy lopez, we are in good shape

Umm...what do you mean you wanted to get a lot more value for Clee? Murphy is a HIGHLY coveted asset in the league. He's a veteran, rebounds, spreads the floor, and very compliant in the locker room. What a value! Courtney Lee's talents are a dime a dozen, but you can't teach size, experience, and shooting to a young team like the Nets. GREAT move by King (or Avery)

Wooow the team is ridiculously balanced now. Shooters athletes, inside and outside play, speed, we have it all. I like Murphy on this team. I hope we resign for cheap. He can be a good back pf/C option when favors develops

This is an awesome deal for the Nets! Lee never struck me as being anything special, and in return they get Troy Murphy, who can rebound (10 a game), shoot the rock (.384 on nearly 5 triple attempts a game last year!), and dish a tiny little bit. With his 12 million dollar expiring contract, they have set themselves up to be in great cap shape come next year, and they also take the pressure off Favors to be great NOW because Murphy, although not an all star, is an acceptable PF in the League.

Hey Sebastian does acquiring Murphy change any of your predictions?

Gotta say I'm happy with this. Now our backcourt will have room for everyone to get ideal playing time, and Favors won't be pushed to develop to quickly.

Sorry, should read "a few weeks ago"

I thought we could get a lot better for C Lee but I guess this will do. But I am with Ezra about Houston. Look what they got for Tmac from the Knicks. Houston's GM single-handedly dismantled them. Hopefully we're not dumb enough to trade any picks.

Now the Nets can trade Harris and whatever for CP3. A few weeks people
said that it made no sense for the Hornets to trade Paul for Harris since the Hornets had Darren Collison at PG. They don't have Collison anymore. Just a thought...

The Nets seem to getting rid of everybody who played for last years teams Who's left if this deal goes down? Lopez, Harris,T-Will and Hump, who they wished would not of come back. Talk about make overs!

Totally agree -- now let's hope it happens. I like CLee a lot, but I fear that he is what he is at this point. I'm more excited to see what TWill can become. That said... Houston has a way of making other teams look silly in trades. Lets hope that doesn't happen.

WOOHOO - The Nets will be alot better with TMurphy. He rebounds very well and his contract is expiring so he could be used in a trade for a big name like Melo
