The Nets Will Make The Playoffs If… The Derrick Favors Edition

The Nets could find themselves playing more than 82 if this guy steps it up.

After struggling with a 12 win season last year, Nets fans are feeling good about their current situation.  A much improved roster, a successful coach, and an owner willing to spend has fans thinking about the playoffs.  We here think that the playoffs are a possibility but not a guarantee.  In this third installment, we are going to look at something that needs to happen for the Nets to make the playoffs.

The Nets will make the Playoffs if… Derrick Favors earns the starting PF role.

Why Is It Important?

Let me preface this by saying it is not my expectation that Derrick Favors will be starting consistently at any point this season, unless they’re out of the playoff race and want to give him more experience & seasoning. That’s not the scenario I’m describing. What I am saying is that if Derrick Favors earns the starting spot, it’s because he’s developed ahead of schedule and has proven himself to be a significant upgrade over proven commodity Troy Murphy. Since Murphy is a legitimate double-double threat with three-point range – an underrated power forward for sure, despite being a defensive liability – if Favors can prove he’s more valuable than Murphy, that means he’s significantly impacting basketball games in a positive manner. Then, that moves Murphy to a sixth man role, where he can be a huge value destroying backup power forwards. This team as currently constructed is likely a fringe playoff team – if our young, raw prospect can exceed his expectations, the Nets will assuredly find themselves in the thick of the playoffs.

Can It Happen?

As the resident “guy who has researched the crap out of Derrick Favors,” it goes without saying that I am excited about his future. It certainly is possible that he adjusts to having a real team & coach very quickly and steals the starting spot with his pure talent. However, I don’t think it’s likely – as most people would agree, he’s still two years away from making a major impact, and Murphy is an underrated forward who will just be too productive to remove from the starting lineup. For a team that was second-worst in the NBA last year in three-point percentage and third-worst in defensive rebounding percentage, supplanting a guy who shoots 38% from 3 and was 5th in the league in defensive rebounding percentage from the starting lineup will be damn near impossible. However, Favors does have unique physical tools and in a system that benefits him we could see a rapid increase in his production that none of us expected. Projecting numbers for him is impossible at this point – it would be silly for me to predict his raw totals since we have no idea how he’s going to fit in the system yet – but it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he produces significantly higher than expected. If Troy Murphy gets sent to the bench because Derrick Favors is stepping up, it means he’s stepping up huge. That production could spell playoff time for the Nets.

well now that we got Murphy, we can see how Favors plays. And then by mid-season, if he gets good, then start Favors to close out the season. And Murphy could be traded by the Feb. deadline possibly if contending teams are looking for someone.

Derrick favors needs to start frm day 1 u the best way to learn is by playin and growin frm mistakes just look at what the magic did with dwight howard these guzs were ba7hcallz the same an look how he turned out.

I like this team without Anthony, trust me. But how can you turn down Anthony , with the current roster.... I wouldn't gut the team or pay him 20+M. If he really wants to win, he needs to come here and take 16-18M. Anyway we will probably be better in 3 years if we leave this team alone, honestly i think so. But i'v been wrong before so i say consider any trade offer for melo. King if you need some advice you can get my email from these guys. PS good job so far...

yes, the Nets CAN make the playoffs. A lot of things would have to fall just right, like the Nets exceeding their expectations, and maybe one or two other teams (the Bobcats? the Bucks?) falling below theirs. we are talking about the Eastern Conference after all, where a .500 season might get you into the playoffs. Another thing would be the team developing that chemistry talked about in the previous post. I think this team, under Avery Johnsons's direction, can be the cinderella of the league this year. Quick note about the grossly underrated Troy Murphy, had he been playing in a bigger market, he would be a much bigger star. Lastly, I think Favors will be a great player. GREAT. This year, I'd rather have him, Morrow, and James to anchor a dynamic, speedy, athletic second unit that runs the opposing second unit off the floor than starting (which also means Troy stays healthy for the whole season). It is possible. We have the technology.

I'm pretty sure CLK is the insanely optimistic twin brother of TT

I think TT is two dollars short of a happy meal,he might be Phil.76er fan hating on the Nets, listen I have been a Nets fan when they were in the ABA, SO I am older than dirt, but i am right 99% of the time in what predict what teams will be good or not.when the Nets got Jason Kidd, everybody were predicting 38-40 wins at most,I PREDICTED THE NETS WOULD BE THE MOST DANGEROUS TEAM IN THE EAST,TO UPSET THE FAVORITES,AS YOU KNOW THEY WENT TO THE FINALS BACK TO BACK WITH THAT TEAM,Now i am not pedicting that the Nets will do the same, but i think this team has some interesting pieces,a deep bench, and i think the chemistry will be great. I like Melo but what people are saying what they have to give up to get him is stupid,if i was the owner i would like to see how this team develops,at least to the feb. trade deadline, and then go from there, but i think they should not give up D.FAVORS OR B.LOPEZ witch will be borderlinecrazy, first, this team is a playoff team, mark my words, not only that, but they can finish, anywhere from the six seed to the eight seed. Now i know that some of you think i am crazy, but i can tell you i am not,i played BB,and all of the people that know me,will tell you i am right most of the time,i will like for you to remember what i said, that the Nets will be the suprise team in the league, because everyone of those writers are still picking the Nets to be one of the worst teams in the league! They base their predictions on last year record, but they don't look at the whole picture, last year was a perfect storm, you had major injuries from the begining of the season, you had a bad coach, and you did not have that many good players KiKi the coach force feed Yi,playing him a lot when he did not deserve it,they had the worst PF,SF,AND A SO SO OFF GUARD IN C.LEE,SO I SEE THE WHOLE PICTURE AND THE NETS WILL PROVE ME RIGHT,JUST REMEMBER WHAT I SAID,YOU GUYS CAN FRAME IT,WATCH!

@LJ23-- sadly true.

I don't think the Nets need Melo now but they want him because it is the NYC area and NYC loves its stars.

@ toasters: I agree totally. I see no scenario of trading for melo that would truly help us.

I don't understand how people think we can start Farmar and Morrow, have D-Leaguers backing them up, and hope to compete. Trading Devin and TWill for Melo will not make us better, even in the short term. And if we trade Murphy and Devin instead, we're looking at a 25 win season.

@andy jalen that scenerio is very realistic. I think Denver is also looking for a 1st rounder or two, since they will have all but admitted they are rebuilding and need the fresh blood and hope that goes with it. Anthony won't come to this team if it has been stripped..he wants to win also. As to "vision" ours does not count unfortuneatly, Prokhorovs' does and he wants to win now.

From what Ive read, tt is a grossly pessimistic person who should stop posting on thi site and start postng on "heatarescorching"

@andy jalen
PG: Farmar
SG: Morrow
SF: Melo
PF: Favor
C: Lopez

Bench point guard, role player at SG, Melo is Melo, unpredictable rookie at PF and improving Lopez at C. So extremely weak backcourt, good but unpredictable front court. I guess decent, but just barely.

I think this trade would just throw everything the Nets have done the past 3 years away. When the Nets didn't get LJ DW and CB they said they are not going to spend a lot of money or make a move diminishing their cap flexibility to be a middle pack playoff team. This trade will make them just that.

The Nets should stick to their plan. Let the young core play a year together, and see how free agency turns out next summer. As a Nets fan, trading away more than one of the following (Harris, TWill, Favors, Murphy, Lopez) will make me angry because the 12 wins season would be a waste!

People need to be patient and not panic and throw everything away for a 5th seed.

What do you guys think?

@tt

Do you ever shut up or do you just continually hate on the Nets. Why do you even post here, we are trying to be optimistic about the Nets chances, we aren't saying they are the main competition to the Heat and Celtics. Devin, Mark and the entire NAS crew have said repeatedly that the Nets are a fringe playoff team, acknowledging the fact that they are not a definate playoff team, but a young team with talent who could potentially be a 6-8 seed in the playoffs. Also, I would like to know who these "former Nets players" are that you talk to, and how they know so much about the inner workings of the Nets. I really haven't heard about too many former players who basically have an all-access pass to their former organizations.

You must have missed yesterdays mail bag. We wouldn't be giving up anything with what Net's are scorching is proposing as a possible trade. Twill,KHump and T Prince to Denv. D Harris to Det. and Melo to Jersey. Now I love the potential of TWill but if your getting Melo for Him and moving up Morrow to the Two and Farmer to the One tha's a decent starting five. homie.

Forget about Carmelo. We should see how this team works out and go from there. TT and his "friends" might be right, but since nobody has seen our "new" team play under our new coach, how can you say that they suck? Basketball is supposed to be about teamwork and pieces fitting together. Who can predict when Favors will emerge? People say David Lee and Amare can't play defense. Why do you pick on Murphy and Lopez? Maybe you should move to Miami...

tt...

dont troll... its lame. It makes you seem like a teenager who gets no attention.
-
The reason I dont want to just throw all my chips in to get Carmelo is because we have a lot of unknowns that are quite intriguing. We have a lot of new players and a lot of potential on this roster. Its interesting to think of the possibilities. And until we see them play together know one could possibly know how it will shake out, including you. But being excited about the following season isn't a crime kiddo.
.
Also, again I do not know if Twill will be the next igoudala or brook the next tim duncan or favors the next amare/dwight but I do know that Carmelo hasn't gotten it done and our team would likely be stripped down to bare bones in order to get him. Carmelo is an expensive commodity, he will be getting paid 20+ million next season wherever he goes. With that kind of expense it will be difficult to rebuild without other tradeable assets. And if half our quality players are traded away for him then we wont be in a position to win either way.
.
So to assume Carmelo helps us "win now" is without vision.

My issue with what you state tt is not that all the things you say are wrong. It's that you speak them like we care. I mean at the end of the day we are fans of the Nets team and want the team to do well. Some of us have been fans such as myself my whole life. Since Kenny Andersen was the point. I could care less who plays for our squad I’m from jersey and I ride for the Nets and the Devils, me being a New Jersey Native I'm going to support. We know there is a potential for us to be the worse team in the East but there is nothing wrong with supporting the decisions we think where good ones such as the Coach and taking what appears to be the best player available at the third pick. I mean the hater mentality that you have is just funny. I respect every bodies opinion but you just like to take this opportunity to bad mouth our team. Nothing that anyone is saying is without possibility. We could make the playoffs. The could land Carmelo in a trade. I mean before the Celts signed KG and Ray Allen no one would have fathomed that was possible. The only way things happen is if people dream they can. So please stop being such a hater it’s corny.

I finally realized who tt is.. he's Yinka Dare.. LOL

to NJNME!

congradulations -you are the only person i have read on this website who has any sense of reality!!
your damn right the new owner wants to win quickly!!
by the reports i hear ,the nets see favors as a project--despite what you read above from devin and his cronies--the nets really dont know what he will develop into and wont for YEARS!
i dont believe this owner will be that patient.

in terms of devin speaking of murphy and his league ranking 5th rebounding defensively---DUDE-the guy just cant play defense--cant cover players--both murphy and lopez are foot slow players--who do you think will slide over quick enough to cover quick offensive players on opposing teams going to the basket? ---answer neither one--it will be easy buckets for quick players who penetrate!!!

to devin and his colleagues,
i have let friends of mine(not the players or columnistsi know)
look at this website-they dont know what world you guys come from!! there is no basis in reality for what you believe in--i am sorry for you guys!!
my only question is whether devin and friends work for the nets as they are the only people on this planet who would attempt to dish out this b.s.!!

boys stick to your day job!! this website is pathetic as viewed by multiple net fans including season ticket holders wh realize this team plainly-sucks!!

Ok lets look at it this way:
Heat Celtics Magic are all shoe-ins to make playoffs
Bucks Hawks and Bulls are all playoff teams and have the players to defend that
Now that leaves 2 spots open
Lets just forget about the raptor, a disaster, and the cavs who got blown out by 20 by the raptors who lost to an average knicks team so that leaves: Wizards with no defense, worse than nets and don't want to play arenas, their best player not John Wall, and the bobcats who lost felton and 2 future draft picks and will have no more than 42 wins if lucky at all, so this is what we have after narrowing it down for the last 2 spots: No Cavs Raptors Wizards or Bobcats
76ers
Knicks
Nets
Pistons
So Out of these 4 teams which ones improved??
Detroit did not improve other than greg monroe, and just do not have enough to make the playoffs, plus hamitlon wallace and others are old, so sure they have villanueva and ben gordon and prince and stuckey but are these players as effective as they should be, and did they show that the 2 years that they have been together? No, so wtf you talking about, pts. arent the only thing a game
76ers: Let me not even get there, Turner is a complete bust, may turn to be an average player at the end of the year but not the 20 pt player to help out jrue holdiay that the 76ers were hoping for, elton brand is just never healthy and neither is andres nocioni, and iggy cannot do everything with t. young, if they staty healty they can cause so trouble, but as i see it, both the nets and knicks have a better bench, even then pistons do

This leaves the nets and knicks to the final 2 spots, considering the fact the knicks have stoudamire gallinari, a 22.3 ppg playing wilson chandler, pg raymond felton, mozgov who just game from amazing FIBA basketball playing, throw in anthony randolph roger mason jr. and toney douglass, playoff bound

The Nets making the playoffs is not compelte BS and not non sense, a real baskteball analyzer can tell you that the nets are going to make the playoffs, already 2-0, and im sure that the net can get at least 36-44 wins minimum, Avery Johnson will win COTY, and will surprise the entire basketball world
PG: Harris/Farmar
SG:Morrow/T-Will/Q.Ross(just an average defender to fill in the blanks)
SF:Outlaw/Damion James(Surprise of the NBA draft along with landry fields)
PF: Favors(best player in draft after wall and cousins)/Murphy/Humphries(second mediocare player)
C:Lopez(All-Star this season)/Petro(one of two mediocare players)

Now i am not saying that what you stated isn't true but to say the nets are weak and that they suck is stupid, the nets can shit on the raptors cavs bobcats wizards 76ers and pistons anyday so i am proud to say that i am a nets fan

I agree with Andy. It might take some time until certain positions, namely PF, SF + SG are ironed out. Will it be...

Murphy
Outlaw
T-Will

or

Favors
James
Morrow

or ?????

the options can be numerous...

The way I see it doesn't really matter from game to game who starts. It's matters who is playing in the fourth quarter and if there is a chance for the nets to win. If any group of players is playing better than another in the fourth that's who is going to finish the game. So Troy could start but will he finish the games or vice versa. That's the key to the Nets this year. They have more depth to there squad. Potential for less laspse that occurred in the third and fourth period last year. Hopefully there in all games close and thus possibly able to win.

@Devin; I understand your reasoning concerning Favors development being a key to Nets fortunes, but I'm not that worried about the PF spot anymore. I think the SF + SG positions will be the key to how well the Nets do this year. Outlaw, T-Will, Morrow and James can make it or break it, for the Nets season, in my opinion. Of course Harris and Lopez have to be healthy and playing well. Between Favors, Murphy, Hump and May, I believe the Nets have the PF position fairly well covered, especially compared to last season.

Prokhorov wants a winner now...Favors might be in a Nuggets uniform in Oct. along with several other former Nets. Of course this is all speculation and an awful lot of what ifs.

Unless he is putting up 15 and 10 and playing good defense, it is better that the Nets have him coming off the bench. The most likely scenario for Favors starting in my opinion is Troy Murphy getting injured (knock on wood). I prefer to have Favors come off the bench, play meaningful minutes, and slowly develop into a starter (as soon as next year though). If he works hard, puts on a little more muscle, there is no reason he can not be an all-star in 3-5 years.
