The Nets Will Make The Playoffs If…Part 4

After struggling with a 12 win season last year, Nets fans are feeling good about their current situation.  A much improved roster, a successful coach, and an owner willing to spend has fans thinking about the playoffs.  We here think that the playoffs are a possibility but not a guarantee.  Over the next two weeks, we are going to look at four things that need to happen for the Nets to make the playoffs.

The Nets Will Make The Playoffs If…Avery Johnson can get the Nets to play solid team defense

Why Is It Important?

In my opinion, defense is just as important as offense when it comes to winning basketball games.  It can get you through cold stretches on the offensive end, and if you play good defense, it helps set a tone.  Given Avery Johnson’s reputation as a defensive minded coach, you know he is going to hold players accountable on the defensive end, however it is going to be a challenge.  This is because of the personnel that he has.  As four of the five projected starters (Harris, Morrow, Outlaw, Murphy, and Lopez) can be considered a defensive liability individually.

On the perimeter, we already know about Devin’s tendency to reach and get lazy, allowing for his man to get by him.  Anthony Morrow is just as bad, if not worse on the defensive end.  According to 82games.com, Morrow allowed opposing SGs to put up 23.3 points/48 and post a PER of 17.8 (average is 15).  On the inside, while Troy Murphy does pull down defensive rebounds, he is a pretty weak defender.  Murphy allowed opposing PFs to put up a PER of 21.5, and when he was on the court the Pacers’ defense allowed 4.1 more points per 100 possessions than when he was off the court.  Brook Lopez is a decent one on one defender, but his poor foot speed and lateral movement is a concern, especially when pairing him with Murphy, who doesn’t have the quickest feet.

Nets’ fans saw how much a poor defensive team hurt the momentum of the Nets game in and game out.  With a new coach, a new system, and a ton of new players the Nets might not start off too hot on the offensive end, which is why defense will be so important.

Can It Happen?

Despite all of the flaws on the defensive end, the Nets can still be a solid defensive team, and this is where Avery Johnson and the rest of the Nets’ coaching staff come into play.  Avery Johnson needs to install a concept of team defense where everyone has each others’ back.  If someone gets by Devin or Morrow, a big helps, while the rest of the team rotates correctly.  On the pick and roll, the Nets are going to have to use a team defense concept to stop the offense.

In my opinion, it can happen, but Avery Johnson needs to get this team trusting each other.  We saw last year how a lack of trust can hurt a team on the defensive end.  There was poor communication, people switching while everyone else was staying home, and rotations were off.  Eventually the team started looking out for themselves rather than the team, and that doesn’t work on the defensive end.

Johnson has a reputation of holding players accountable, and I think this accountability will force each and every player on the Nets to trust his teammates on the defensive end, and in conclusion be a pretty solid defensive team.

The Nets Will Make The Playoffs If…the Nets…play solid team defense ~
Given our limitations, does that mean more zone defenses, conceding some 3pters?

I agree with your concerns, Sebastian. While the Nets look well coordinated and versatile on offense, the defense will have big holes to cover at the SG and PF. We're much improved, but losing Lee will hurt, not only for his man defense but for team defense also. There is just an overall lack of lateral quickness. It's too early to tell whether TWill, Favors, James will be of help this year. Since Avery is a defense oriented coach, I'm assuming that there will be another move to pick up the team.

You would be a fool not to take melo in a trade where lopez was the best player leaving.....F.O.O.L.

@hbj725 I agree. It would be very difficult replacing a talented center like Lopez.

lopez for carmelo would be a mistake. lopez is younger and is a back to the basket scoring center. there arent too many centers who still has his type of game...

I think Avery can be the one who can bring this team together playing good defensive ball. I believe he can adjust his game plan to incorporate the strengths or weaknesses of individual players such as Lopez, Murphy, Morrow etc. Having said that, Alex Kennedy on his regular chat on HoopsWorld, stated he has heard rumor, and I stress rumor, the Nets are offering Lopez for Carmelo. Any thoughts?

Favors and T-Will are the only ones with the real ability to change the face of the defense. When Jason Kidd and Jason Collins arrived in 2001 they made the whole team tougher.. Jason was the floor visionary, and Jason was a thorn in everybody's side, using his body to make sure no one got easy looks.

These two are the only ones on the team with the real athletic ability to be able to make that kind of difference in a ball game-I know Favors has his head in the right place (maybe not his in-game ability yet) but I definitely worry about Twill and his maturity on both offense and defense.

The Nets can become a good defensive team under Avery. He got Dirk and the Mavs to play D. Yi was the biggest liability on defense because of his poor bball IQ and lack of communication skills. You can be a bad one on one defender but a good team defender. Rebounding is the result of good defense. The Nets can be both under Avery. Devin will not be. Able to slack on defense or be a ball hog. Avery will yank him in a minute

@ Sebastian- if what u are saying is true about morrow and his fundementals, then that is smething that can definitely be corrected with the right coaching. I think his lack of fundementals is once again a testimant to nelly's style. he doenst coach defense. Hopefull avery can get something out of him on that end. But a god team defensive sceme could solve all of this. It worked wonders for the celtics...

Considering Terrence Williams plays best WITH Devin on the court I would hope Williams plays point and Devin plays the two on offense.

Also, Terrence didn't really set up Favors too well in summer league. Wouldn't a second unit of Farmar, Morrow, DJames, and Favors be a little more advantageous for Favors? He would get more touches and traditional low post sets. Is Favors good at the pick and roll yet?

And Terrence Williams is best (as evident from last year) when he gets minutes.
Anthony Morrow has shown he can provide offense regardless.

Also Terrence Williams is potentially a much better defender and would help keep the first quarter competitive. Didn't the Nets lose many games last year because they let the first quarter get away from them?

Also, starters for Avery (in the past) have included Adrien Griffin--yet Griffin only played a certain number of minutes per game. While the Nets are two-deep 1-5 there is a chance Avery "starts" someone like Morrow (yet there is still no evidence of this yet, right?) but play Farmar or Terrence Williams the majority of the minutes because they are better defenders. The same could be applied to Troy Murphy. He could start but could share his minutes equally with Favors if Favors proves a better defender. Avery has shown in the past that just because someone starts doesn't guarantee them minutes.

@hbj - Morrow was a bad defender and it really didn't have much to do with the team he played for. He has poor fundamentals, and he just isn't athletic enough to stay in front of people. Now, if Avery works on his fundamentals, he will become an ok defender, but that lack of athletic ability is still going to hurt him.

As for Lopez and his poor foot speed, it isn't about other centers taking advantage, it is about how his lack of speed will hurt on help and recover and PNR situations.

I think Morrow will start because of how great of a shooter he is. When a guy can hit the 3 point shot with the consistency he has shown, u want him on the floor at least 28-30 minutes a game.
As for Morrow's defense, we cant really judge his ability yet. He played at Golden State. No one plays defene there. It's a shoot out from opening tip off. So everyone's numbers are going to be high against that team because of the amount of shots each team takes during a game. That's the way nelly does it.
As for Devin, he played much better defense when he was in dallas under avery. That will return.
Lopez may have slow foot speed, but how many centers in the nba are good enough to take advantage of that?
Outlaw will be a good defender for us. He is quick, long and athletic.

Do we actually know Morrow will start or is this just NAS speculation? NAS keeps showing its preference that Morrow will start but are there any facts to this?

You make some great points. Not just lacking simple fundamentals, but the Nets showed a great deal of youth last season when guarding the pick & roll. Communication is such an underrated part of team defense.
