Daily Link: Nets Head the Pack for ‘Melo Trade

NBA writer extraordinaire Adrian Wojnarowski has some interesting news on the Carmelo Anthony saga – he wants out of Denver, and that appears to be somewhat official – but if Denver is going to pull the trigger, they want to get something back in return. That’s where the Nets come in:

The Nuggets made it clear to teams they want young players and draft picks for Anthony, league executives said. The New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers have emerged as the two most probable destinations for Anthony because they have assets that appeal to Denver. The geography works for Anthony because of his wife LaLa Vazquez’s entertainment career.

Since these ‘Melo trade rumors began a few weeks ago, I’ve heard a lot of Nets fans say Anthony is not the kind of franchise changing player the Nets should be chasing. Balderdash. Granted, I wouldn’t trade just anyone for ‘Melo, it would have to make sense. But if you pair an offensive talent like Anthony with a center like Brook Lopez, the Nets can become a dangerous team.

How about:

Murphey, Favors, Harris and Williams (Maybe picks too)

for

Melo, Jr Smith, and Chris Anderson
(or Kenyon Martin instead of Smith and Anderson)

Lopez, Favors, and Harris should be off limits. Why would Denver try to get a player from NJ thats not going to be happy. They wont have Billups because he will want out once Melo's gone. Kenyon, Birdman, Nene, and JR are all very attractive pieces for top ten pics for the next 7 or 8 years, to any playoff team. The Nets will not win against the Heat , Lakers, or Celtics if they trade Favors. Neither will the Nuggets.

as long as Lopez is not given up.. He stays in NJ AT ALL COSTS!

NJ is obviously the #1 team in the running for Melo it is just up to King and Proky to decide if giving up the future is worth it.

Well I think it is going to be a steep price to land Melo. Not only that but the Nets will have to make sure that they can lock him for at lest six years. Instead of Favors than how about several of our picks we have 10 in the next three years why not give them 4 or more?

LJ23-
Twill, Favors, AND a pick seems like a steep price. And it wouldn't even work. The salaries don't match. We need to either send Murphy or Harris or Outlaw (in three months) to make salaries match. And then decorate the trade with a prospect like Twill and/or Favors. Or simply offer them a bunch of picks. No other team has as many picks as we do. And the Warriors pick is likely a decent lottery pick.

I think Denver would take Favors and Twill and a pick for JR and Melo. They aren't going to get any better than that from anyone else in the NBA.

Favors is going to be good in three years. Melo is good now.

If we could retain Harris Lopez and Favors that would really be something. We know Lopez isn't going anywhere so if neither of the other two are in a deal that would be made you can bet T Will is as good as gone.

I would part with Favors for Melo... Tough to say but.... I would...

@gabe...

Favors and Lopez need to be off limits. If we're trading for Anthony Harris likely isn't a good fit for the trade, so T-Will would have to be the piece to consider. Troy Murphy and T-Will and a 1st round pick alone should be all we offer, plus Hump and whoever else we need to get the salaries right.

Screw the Knicks and their low-ball offers. We should do the same. Denver is losing 'Melo no matter what in a year. The Clippers and Nets have the pieces to get it done, and the Knicks are desperate and poorly run enough to offer more than they should.

Even if they do, who cares. They'll either suck with Melo, or suck without him. We're either moving towards contention without Melo, or making the right deal to move towards contention with him.

So just offer a decent, but conservative trade offer, and let the Nuggets do whatever.

This guy is a solid player who can score on anyone and would add a Vince Carter in his prime component to our squad. But this guy isn't bringing us a championship all by himself, and we need Devin to step up, Brook to continue to progress, and Favors to emerge to contend for a championship with or without Melo. Those are the players we need to keep our focus on.

trade twill outlaw and troy murphy 1st rounder for melo

Sam-- Don't be a downer. Have you never been Melo? This will all work out beee-yootifully if the NBA decides to get rid of the salary cap or Outlaw quits to join Cirque du Soleil.

I know this is unlikely, but i think the trade should be:

T-Will, Outlaw, Hump (expiring), and our pick plus the Warriors' pick for Melo and JR Smith or Birdman.

That would leave a lineup of:

Devin/Farmar
Morrow/JR
Melo/James
Murphy/Favors
Lopez/Petro

Pretty nasty if you ask me.

It's too bad the team signed Outlaw because if they now acquire Carmelo, they have 24 million locked in to the Small Forward for this season, at which point we'll have to re-sign Melo for even more money. That's a lot when you think that we'll need to re-sign Brook for significant dough (15 million), find a full time shooting guard, and find a backup power forward.

Hmmmm...

If you want Melo, then Favors and or Lopez will be included in the deal.

@Mark Wu - TWill is definitely in my package for 'Melo, they probably need to dump Murphy to make the salaries match unless Denver is really desperate for Harris (which I don't think), GSW's protected first rounder is probably another chip I'd give up.

So I'm thinking TWill, A contract, and a first rounder is my limits.

The deal is likely to include Troy Murphy... and it would just feel weird to give him up before we even play him but I guess it would be worth it.

My favorite (eligible) trade would be to send Troy Murphy, Kris Humphries, Damion James and 3 future first round picks (including the lottery pick from Golden State *as long as it isn't top 7) for Carmelo. Considering the Knicks can only offer two first round picks over the next 5 years this might be enough to low ball the Nuggs for Carmelo.
-
The problem is the Knicks would likely throw in Danillo as a last ditch effort. Their trade would look like: Eddy Curry (expiring), Danillo Gallinari, and two future first round picks.
-
Either way, the Nets would most likely have to include, or substitute to include, Terrence Williams, Derrick Favors, or Devin Harris to secure the trade.
-
A trade of Troy Murphy (expiring), Terrence Williams, and Kris Humphries (expiring), with the warriors pick in 2011 or 2012, the nets own pick next year 2011, and again in 2013 should be enough to edge out the other offers (at least from the Knicks, Bobcats, and Magic).
-
The Bobcats would have to wait three weeks before it can offer any player in combination with Eric Dampier. Without Dampier being part of a deal they would have to part with Boris Diaw (expiring), youngsters Augustine and Henderson, and multiple picks to even be in the conversation. Everyone else on their roster is either untradable due to restrictions or veterans with money and years on their contracts that the Nuggets wouldnt want.
-
The Magic could offer various combinations of M. Gortat, Brandon Bass, Ryan Anderson, Jameer Nelson, and Michael Pietrus (expiring) with picks. This is probably as good an offer as the Nets depending on what the Nuggets want. Chances are the Magic aren't this aggressive considering they would either have to blow up all their entire front line (except Dwight) or throw in their starting point guard to match salaries. And there is no guarantee the Nuggets would be interested in Nelson since he is owed near 20 million still and more of a Bobby Jackson type point guard than a traditional one.
-
And It's possible the Rockets and Clippers could even offer better packages than the Knicks, Magic, and Bobcats but I think at the end of the day the Nets could always include their first round pick this year (Damion James) as a cherry on top and call it a day. It's fair to assume the Clippers wouldn't be including Griffin or Gordon but Aminu could be the young talent that Denver covets. But I think the Nets still have the best options.
-
The point is, the Nets actually do have the pieces to offer the best package but it's up to the market to determine Carmelo's price and then the Nets need to see if he is worth it. Personally, I would take Carmelo for picks, Troy Murph, Hump, Terrence and DJames.

I love T-Will, but Melo is the guy I'd rather have. If we can keep Favors, Lopez, and add Melo, we'll be very nasty.

Melo can score at will on most of the league. Lopez and Favors inside will be a nasty clean up crew and a defensive barricade inside. The pieces we could add next year to this core could be exceptional.

Im torn. Im not sure if we should trade our young players for melo. I doubt he puts us over the top this year and I love Terrence Williams skill set. WHo would be more likely to win a champonship in 3 years. Harris, Morrow, Melo, Favors, Lopez or Harris, Williams, James, Favors, Lopez

NETS INCOME on NetsDaily commented that Troy Murphy can be traded right now. He sounded like he just found out that info.
I would trade Denver one #1 draft pick and James or T-Will, Murphy and Hump. Denver should not get the best of this deal. They are the losers in this situation and should be treated as such. Let some other team over pay for Melo.

Williams, James, 2 first rounders? Then make the salaries match up, and sign ai! Lmao

@Mark G.

What's the absolute max, best, rich offer you'd be fine with giving up for Melo? Would you be fine with trading TWill? Favors? etc

It would be nice to get Melo right now but if the Nuggets could wait until December the Nets could include TOutlaw and Murphy without giving up Devin. The Nets could send TWill and get JR also

if the nets can keep favors and lopez then add melo thats a dangerous team
