Devin Harris’ Expects to Make Playoffs in 2010-11, Needs to Raise Game

Evan Kaplan is a new writer for NetsAreScorching and he will be posting here once a week.  Evan is a lifelong Nets’ fan, so he shares the same passion for the Nets as all the other writers do.  To keep track of Evan’s work, you can go here.

The Nets won just 12 games last season. It was by all accounts one of the worst seasons in NBA history. So don’t blame me if I’m a bit skeptical of starting point guard Devin Harris when he says the team’s expectation is to make the playoffs in 2010-11. Let’s just take this thing one step at a time, Devin.

There is no question that this year’s version of the Nets will have more talent. The additions of Troy Murphy, Derrick Favors and Jordan Farmar will certainly help the team (and I guess you can throw Anthony Morrow, Travis Outlaw and Johan Petro in there, too). But with so many new pieces a major factor will be how this team meshes together. New Head Coach Avery Johnson will have the task of getting everyone on the same page and making sure everyone knows their role on the team. But in the increasingly point-guard driven NBA, much of the success of this season will fall on D. Harris.

Devin Harris will be entering his third full season in Jersey and the team is hoping he can regain his 2008-2009 form. Despite the team winning just 34 games two seasons ago, Harris’ numbers were quite impressive. He averaged 21.3 points, 6.9 assists and 1.6 steals, on his way to being named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team. But his numbers trailed off dramatically in 2009-2010, and he admitted that in 2010-11 he needed to get healthy and regain his All-Star form.

The relationship between Harris and Avery Johnson will be one to keep a close eye on. The two were together in Dallas and many in the media felt that Johnson did not let Harris play the point guard position with enough freedom. However the Nets point guard did say he was excited when the organization hired Johnson to be the team’s new head coach.

The former Wisconsin star is the definition of the modern-day hybrid point guard. He is most effective when he’s scoring the ball first and dishing to teammates second. But with the new pieces the Nets have on their roster, he needs to be more of a facilitator and get everyone else involved. In 64 games last season, Harris had 10 or more assists just 7 times. If the Nets are to improve in this upcoming season and take a substantial step towards respectability, he will need to up his play and be the team’s true floor general. Devin Harris can say he expects the Nets to make the playoffs in 2010-11, but much of the team’s success will fall on his shoulders, and if he can become an All-Star caliber player again.

First, I agree. The Nets CAN make the playoffs. The stars would have to align just so, the Nets would have to gel as a team and develop that elusive team chemistry quickly, and one or two other Eastern Conference teams would have to fall below their expectations or predictions.

Second, I compare this Nets team to the Miami Heat of 2008 - 09. They were coming off their 15 - 67 season while D Wade had been hurt. Our All-Star guard was hurting all last season, and we went 12 - 70. Funny, but I don't recall mass firings or doomsday predictions for the Heat back then. The following season the Heat go 43 - 39 and make the playoffs.

This year, Devin Harris is healthy and the team around him is light years better. Avery Johnson has learned a lot during his 2 year hiatus from coaching and is even a better coach than he was before, when he clashed with Harris in Dallas, and let's not forget that after that trade, Johnson and Kidd butted heads as well.

Let's Go Nets!!! To the playoffs and beyond!

brook didnt get cut from the team, he left the team himself cuz he had mono, which does seem like it would be quite difficult to play with.

We are much better than last year but harris will have a hard time averaging 20. If he does, he should get alot credit. No other net demands a double. Lopez not making team USA proves he isnt a go to guy. They preferred no center than an unhealthy lopez. So yes in my opinion this is harris team but he needs one more real threat on the wing. Lopez is real good if he gets healthy. Hopefully TWill turns into that threat. He should look to score more often.

carmelo just turned 26 three months ago btw, a year younger than harris...but favors may till have to develop a little faster to not miss carmelo at his peak. and considering that lakers have won the past 2 years with fisher as their point guard...maybe, just maybe nets can make a deep playoff run in a few years with farmer at the point (granted carmelo<kobe, morrow<odom, favors+lopez in a few years are not necessarily better than gasol+bynum now).

@joe, i looked at that too yesterday :P, but with the carmelo trade becoming more and more imminent, maybe NAS can update it after carmelo's destination is determined

are NAS writers going to write a more detailed analysis of their opinion on what a harris+williams+humphries+1st round picks for carmelo trade would mean for the nets in the short and long term? would outlaw's minutes drasticly decrease? and also what would be plausible back-up options for farmer if harris and williams were traded?
i know it is still very likely it doesn't happen, but would be an interesting read

a little off topic but,can someone please update the salaries page please? =]

i dont think Devin has to be a true past first PG for us to be successful. as you said he is most effective when he is looking to score first and pass second. if Devin avgs 20 ppg and 7 or 8 apg with 1.5 spg we will definitely still make the playoffs as long as all our acquisitions have the kind of year they are expected to have. and T will has a full season of what he did in the last 6 weeks or so of last year and brook maybe gets us around 20/9.

we r sooo much better then we were last year so even if Devin has basically the same numbers he had last year except maybe a better FG% and a lot less 3pt attempts we will be fine as long as the other guys play their roles well.

This is Brook Lopez's Team Baby!!!

Devin has to be a pass first pg for this team to succeed. He has got to play some serious defense. Jason Kidd's defense on pg's pushed the Nets to the Finals twice

Just so we're on the same page, who wrote this? It says Sebastian Pruiti, but then again Evan Kaplan could've written it as well... Anyways, good read

Devin had no team last year, and with all the chaos surrounding the Nets last season, I could see the air come right out of Harris. He looked like a beaten man. With better shooters and a stronger front court Devin should be able to regain his form of two years ago. If Devin regains his all-star status the Nets will be playoff contenders barring any major breakdown involving Brook Lopez. Harris is not a natural leader but with AJ riding shotgun he should be O.K.
