Who Would You Trade For Carmelo Anthony (Part III: Terrence Williams)

With the Nets constantly being mentioned by the mainstream sports media as a potential landing spot for Carmelo Anthony, the NAS squad is going to take a look over at some of the players who would likely be included in a deal for the All-Star SF.

Would you Trade Terrence Williams?

The Case For Trading Terrence Williams:

The man is all potential at this point.  Williams is a favorite of a lot of Nets fans and surely many will cry foul should T-Will be traded.  Afterall, some may have spent $40+ dollars on a Williams jersey and it only appreciated one year’s worth of value?  In any case, Williams is loaded with talent and athleticism and brings a certain amount of excitement every time his kicks touch the hardwood.  However, he can’t shoot for excrement!  Granted it was his rookie season, but shooting 40.1% for the season is as bad as answering your girlfriend when she asks you if she looks good in a certain outfit (BTW, the answer is always to ask a question back such as, “Do you think you look good in it?”).

Taking a closer look at it, Williams shot 55.4% at the rim and 50.0% from less than 10 feet, which is decent, but 31.6% from 10-15 feet, 22.0% from 16-23 feet, and 31.0% from three-point range.  In a word, yuck.  Obviously as a wing player, one must, you know, be able to hit shots from the wing and Williams clearly cannot do that yet.  Unfortunately for T-Will, there are other players now on the team that can.  Anthony Morrow is a career 48.1% shooter from 10-15, 44.1% from 16-23, and 46.0% from the land of treys.  Travis Outlaw, in the past four seasons, has hit 39.8% of his shots from 10-15, 41.8% from 16-23, and 36.4% from behind the three-point line.

Granted getting to the rim is part of being a wing player, but both Morrow and Outlaw are pretty good finishers at the rim themselves, so Williams doesn’t stand out in that respect.  So, unless T-Will can get a jumper of some kind with the quickfast, he has to be considered expendable, particularly for a player of Carmelo Anthony’s caliber.

The Case Against Trading Terrence Williams:

The man is all potential at this point.  However, the last two months of the 2009-10 season, in particular, showed how great Williams could be.  In 15 March games, T-Will averaged 14.1 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 4.9 APG.  In 7 April games, he slightly upped the production by averaging 14.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 6.3 APG, a month that includes getting his first career triple-double (27, 13, 10) versus the Chicago Bulls on April 9th.  And to get back to his shooting, in March, Williams shot 42.9% from the field and did a lot better in April, hitting 45.5% of his shots.  So, there is hope yet!

Given the burn on the court, T-Will is basically a triple-double waiting to happen.  His Per 40 stats break down to 14.9 PPG, 7.9 RPG, and 5.1 APG.  Williams is a freak athlete with outstanding court vision and passing ability for a wing.  In fact, there always seems to be talk about T-Will playing the lead guard position as a back-up to Devin Harris.  Williams has the tools to become an outstanding defender at the NBA level as he was during his college days at Louisville, able to defend multiple positions.  Again, there is a lot of potential here with Williams.

The Final Verdict:

Potential is a nice thing, however, it can only get you so far, especially if you’re the Nets trying to make the playoffs and change the culture surrounding the team.  So, the question is, will Carmelo Anthony help the Nets into the playoffs?  No question.  Will T-Will?  Quite possibly, but there is a better chance with Melo around in a Nets uni.  So, Terrence Williams, we hardly knew ye.  Enjoy Denver.

I guess the triple doubles were potential as if he didn't play his potential must have shown up and did it for him.

I trade Twill in a heart beat. I totally agree with Dennis, TRADE TWILL!!!!! All potential means is that a player has yet to do anything yet, and sure Twill's last two months were nice to see, but there were only 2 months lets see i he can put up points for more than 7 years like Melo. This should not even be a question for the nets organization - it should be more like a farewell party.

If he's better then 90% of centers, how is he mediocre? Who are you benchmarking him against the hall of fame? ROFL. The nba has the best basketball players in the world and thus the best centers. If he's better than 90% of them he doesn't fit the definition of mediocre please reevaluate.

okay now we know Denver isn't going to trade Melo.

Nets with TWill = 32-36 wins
-
Nets with Carmelo = 42-46 wins, tons of hype and at least 1 suspension for some sort of bad behavior.
-
Yawn. Wake me up when the Nets got something good on the table. I'd rather route for 'my guys' than some other teams' issues.
-
On a real note: who reads TWills tweets and what do they make of the confidence and security he exihibits there. Am i the only one who feels he's been told/promised things we're unaware of.

Okay if it makes you feel better Brook Lopez is like Vanilla ice cream.. lol the base to alot of good things but nothing with out the toppings.. HAHAHAH

Brook is Very mediocre... Just because Mediocre is better than 90% of the centers in the league doesn't make it good.

I think T-Will could be one of those players that tease you his whole career, sometimes players come into the NBA,they have loads of potential, and they never reach it,see Tim Thomas, and others with loads of talent,so don't get to crazy about T-Will,I think that Avery Johnson wasn't to impress with him in the summer league, because he took to many shots, didn't get D favors the ball, and when he didn't play in the last game against Boston,D. Favors has his best game, 23 points and 11 rebounds, the point guard that game i forgot his name,he just made simple passes to D.Favors,so we have to be careful about thinking that a player just because he has a ton of talent, doesn't mean he will reach it.And Andy Jalen, if you think that Brook Lopez is mediocre, then you need need to stop taking drugs, because a mind is a terrible thing to waste!

Honestly, I would prefer that Melo stays with the Nuggets. I'd like to develope our players and see what we have. then we could go fishing again for an FA or two. I really don't think he would get us by any of the top teams in the east..he hasn't done it in Denver with help.

@Shea23, good point...Funny how things work out sometimes. If T-will was a better shooter in college we would not have gotten him at #11. Same with Brook. If Brook was more "athletic" he would not of been available at #10. We got pretty lucky with those picks so far. Then Ryan Anderson turns into Troy Murphy. Maybe Favors and James keep our streak going.

Love T Will and his potential I'm also glad he was not a better shooter when drafted otherwise we wouldn't have gotten him at 11. However if TW was the centerpiece in a deal for Anthony who is at least a top ten player in the league entering his prime that would be a great day for nets fans. T Will might have the potential to even be an all star some day Anthony is already there and then some.

Weather you like him or not, Carmelo is considered a young superstar with "charisma". Selling seats and higher T.V. ratings are a big part of the equation. Remember that Proky memo pertaining to the "casual fan" that the Nets want so badly to court and win over. Well Melo will be the Romeo to the casual fans Juliet. I knew reading Shakespeare would come in handy one day...

I question why you want a guy who is only a scorer. Carmelo doesn't play defense....at all. Yes you might sale some tickets in the short run. Twill will keep improving and be an all star somewhere.

Who knows maybe with a coach he and the team will do better.

I would love to see what twill can turn into with good coaching and better players around him. Twill has skills. Yes his shooting percentage was down, bt he was only a rookie. What he did the last 2 months of the season is the start of something special he can grow into. He may not become an all star. But he can become a very good role player.

Gotta give to receive. Assuming he signs an extension, you have to include TWill in a trade for Anthony. You send Hump, harris, twill and a first rounder for carmelo. Harris can back up Billups or start at the 2 or could be used as trade bait. TWill replaces Melo and they get a draft pick and expiring contract.

Allows you to keep Lopez and Favors; and more importantly gives you a legit shot at CP3 when he becomes available. Trade Murphy and his expiring contract, a first rounder and something else if you need to make the numbers work for CP3 at the deadline.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=...

All of a sudden your starting line up next year is lopez, favors, melo, morrow, cp3; with james, outlaw, farmar, petro and ross coming off the bench. That starting lineup can easily contend with miami, orlando, boston and chicago. Also, that starting unit would increase the liklihood that the Nets could more easily land complimentary free agents. I am probably drinking the koolaid thinking NO trades CP3 for a Murphy and his expiring contract and a draft pick, but a man can dream.

Terrence Williams can, and in my opinion, will be, a star in this league. His shooting % got better each year in college, and it got better throughout the year as a rookie. He has shown no signs of a lack of work ethic, and he plays like a poor man's LeBron, without the douchebaggyness that LeBron brings to the table.

It's funny how people seem to not notice or dismiss T-Will's last two months. I would of been more worried if T-Will started out hot then fizzled out in the last two months. He did improve greatly on the court as well as off. I think he might turn into that wild card type of player, that will cause major headaches for opposing teams. I wish it would be possible to trade for Carmelo without giving up any of our players. But if we do make that trade for Anthony I believe T-Will will be part of the asking price especially if Favors is not included.

@andy jalen I agree... shooting can be something that can be worked on.. but then I have to ask, does T-Will not work on shooting? Looking at his Louisville shooting percentages aren't particularly encouraging:

Freshman season: 39.1%
Sophomore: 36.7%
Junior: 41.1%
Senior: 43.1%

And, sometimes I think athleticism can be overrated if a player doesn't have an actual skill set. Not to say T-Will doesn't as he clearly does... it's just that shooting is not one of them. And that's important for a perimeter player.

William's stats are interesting to say the least. Everybody's stats were down last season. If Morrow was on the Nets last season, I think we would be looking at this differently. Courtney Lee was played for D and to be our wing man and knock down 3's. Look how much his % went down since Orlando. In light of not letting Melo land elsewhere, I'd say do it, but if we could avoid it, do so. With a team that is twice as good as last years, I wouldn't be surprised to see T-Will's % go wayyy up, as well as (hopefully) many of the Net's stats. Nets>Knicks. Melo in Free-Agency.

Although I am one of the fans that would be upset at the trading of T Will I think the knocks on his shooting are ludicrous. After all shooting is something that can be work on Athleticism can’t. And after all it was the man rookie year and if it was for a coach that didn’t have a clue and I’m not talking about the KIKI I’m talking about Frank. If anything Frank was the worst thing that could have happened to Terrence Williams jump shot and production all season. So yes if you have to trade for a player he is probably going to be the peace you trade but let’s not fool ourselves in to progressing him further than he should be at this point in his career. After all if Brook Lopez can be mediocre at the Center spot and we be “ oh he’s the greatest thing since slice bread” and mind you the offense is running through him. Then we can be okay with a rookie that shoots 40% but also when allowed scored 31 10 and 10.
