Who Would You Trade For Carmelo Anthony (Part IV: Derrick Favors)

With the Nets constantly being mentioned by the mainstream sports media as a potential landing spot for Carmelo Anthony, the NAS squad is going to take a look over at some of the players who would likely be included in a deal for the All-Star SF.

Note: Earlier this week, we at NAS incorrectly referred to a rule that noted Derrick Favors could not be traded within the year. In actuality he is only trade-protected within 30 days of signing his rookie contract. We apologize for the error.

Would You Trade Derrick Favors?

The Case For Trading Derrick Favors:

At the heart of it, Derrick Favors is still a prospect. The youngest player selected in the 2010 draft, he certainly showed his youth on many occasions at Georgia Tech and in summer league. It’s entirely possible that he doesn’t pan out to be near the star we’re hoping for – if he doesn’t put together solid offensive low post moves and be more consistently aggressive on both sides of the floor, he could be in for an unproductive career. Carmelo Anthony, on the other hand, is already established as a star. We know his pedigree. We know he’s a player who can help a team on the floor and in the box office at a top-15 level in the league. He’s proven that, and he hasn’t proven it to the point of age – he’s only 26 years old and right in the middle of his prime.

Also, if we’re really serious about acquiring Carmelo Anthony, dealing Favors may be an inevitability. It’s entirely possible that Denver will demand Favors in a deal, or it’s a no-go. Given the other pieces that the Nets can offer (Devin Harris and Terrence Williams being the two obvious choices), Denver might decide that Favors is a far more intriguing asset and decide only to make the deal with him included.

The Case Against Trading Derrick Favors:

Derrick Favors wasn’t the third overall draft pick in 2010 by accident. His physical tools are almost completely unmatched – of true power forwards, no player selected in the top 15 has ever hit as high on the max vertical reach in the combine (12’1.5″) and his blend of size and speed is as close to unique as you can get at the power forward position. Some critic will surely pan me for reminiscing about my own articles, but nonetheless: I wrote while we were still debating between him and DeMarcus Cousins that Favors has the chance to be the “next” prototypical power forward in a game that’s quickly shifting towards athleticism, and I still believe that. He has the potential to be the John Wall/Derrick Rose/Russell Westbrook of the 4, the evolutionary power forward who deftly combines God-given athletic ability with “hard work” (which should be copyrighted by Derrick at some point) and a deep knowledge of the game of basketball. Trading him when the Nets are so clearly focused on his future as a part of the rebuilding process would seem foolhardy, a step backwards for a team that needs to develop its identity.

The Final Verdict

Despite Fred Kerber’s article naming Brook Lopez as the lone untouchable, If it comes down to giving up Derrick Favors or not getting Carmelo Anthony, I would choose to keep Derrick Favors every time. Carmelo Anthony is an established star, but Derrick’s ceiling is higher than what Melo does now – he may never have the flashy points per game numbers but if he develops he’ll impact the game in multiple ways that Melo has never been able to do. Carmelo may have been the 3rd pick in 2003, but this is 2010 – and the 3rd pick this year has a bright, bright future with the New Jersey Nets. I just hope the front office feels the same way.

I would definately trade Favors for Melo. Favors is still a prospect and you dont know what you are going to get or how long that might take. Melo has proven himself. In general i think you trade proven for unproven especially if proven is still in his prime and woudl sign a contract extention. The deciding factor for me, however, is the intangible that Melo has. Melo will convince other free agents and top players to come to NJ. They will come play with him. No one is coming to NJ to play with Favors.

I have thought since they drafted him that favors was nothing more the an asset that would be used as trade bait. I will be very surprised if he starts the season as a NJ Net, adn shocked if he ends the season as a Net. Its not a knock on him or his potential ability, I just think he will included in a trade before the season or at teh deeadline to bring in a bigger name.

no need to give any real value to Denver...maybe some picks/but no starters...the deal is more important to denver...and if he comes feb. by then we should know if we make playoff or not...truth is we have a better shot to sign him next summer...

Lol whatever happened to the season predictions?

@clk

Melo has said before that he would agree to an extension with NJ and HOU if he were to be traded there. I would still not trade Favors or Lopez though. My highest offer would be Murphy, James, Hump or Ross, and some picks. If they reject, screw them, no need to gut our roster for Melo.

I cant beleive im saying this. NO i wouldnt give up favors for melo. I actually agree with alot of you guys on this one.

The bottomline is we should wait to see how this team develops,i think the way this team is,i see a few players comming into their own,we just need to be patient,at least to the trading deadline in Feb.,that way you can get a good read on the team, and see what needs to be done. I like this team i think we are going to surprise a lot of people, that's why i do not want to trade for Melo right now, plus i think he will only sign an extention with the Knicks,if he is traded to them.So i think that all the talk about who will be traded if he comes to the Nets is a waste of time.

I'm with your “Final Verdict”. I will not give up DHarris either.
Troy, TWilliams, DJames and Draft picks up to complete trade. If we are going for Carmelo, there is a chance to get CPaul using Devin. With the pieces we have together and coaching staff ready to develope young players and our game, we have plenty to spread the floor for Brook. Lots of threat in 3p shooting and penetrating. The issue is "D" and here will be concentrated all the work for players as a team.
Iwill not trade DFavors, or Brook for "Melo. Period.

I 100% agree. I really believe that the Lopez/Favors combo will, in the near future, be as effective to the Nets as the Duncan/Robinson combo for the Spurs. The Nets just need to be patient and wait for our young guys to develop.

Just to make a quick point based of what your saying Mike while Devin Harris is a good PG and I like him right now. And he's just in his prime. The rest of our team is a good deal younger and for someone as quick as Harris he'll need replacing before the rest of the core are fully matured.

I also agree we should not give up Favors. His ceiling is higher than Melo's ceiling. While Favors will never be the offensive threat Melo is, he has the potential to be an elite defender. On the level of Dwight. With Lopez's offense and Favors defense, that would contend for the best frontcourt for years to come. Out young guys will grow together and hit their primes around the same time, hungry for a championship.

Plus if we had to trade Devin and Favors its a clear no. That would gut the team and the nice core we've been building. But (not saying I'm in favor :) of dealing favors) if we can keep either one of those players while adding Anthony we'd be in good shape.

Hey Devin... Just admit you don't want to trade Favors for Melo because then we probably would have to throw in another Devin...Harris in the deal. Not too many of you Devin's around, so you want to stick together.
--------------------------------
In all seriousness, I agree 100% with your "Final Verdict". When Anthony is 32 or so, Favors will be 24. Even with Melo the Nets probably won't be able to compete with Miami for a few years. Keep Lopez and Favors and in 5 years or so, when The big three in Miami are on the wrong side of 30, we strike. In 5 years our young team will be in their prime, and ready to win it all.
--------------------------------
Melo is the wrong superstar at the wrong time, and probably for the wrong price if it costs us either Favors, or of course, Lopez.
---------------------------------
But if we can get him without giving up Favors or Lopez lets do it. Otherwise just walk away from the deal. You don't have to make every deal, right?
