An Open Letter To Billy King

Dear Mr. King,

I’ve obviously been keeping my ear on the ground regarding the possible Carmelo Anthony trade and I just have to ask… how do you do it? I sincerely give you props on your patience and persistence, and I imagine it can’t be easy if the reports are correct in that Mikhail Prokhorov is jonesing hard for Melo to join the team. You can’t fight the owner, right? Well, not if you want to keep your job. In any case, there are obvious benefits in the trade happening – great player to market, a star in the NBA, etc.

However, I just don’t believe the price to get him is worth sacrificing the future of the team. I wrote about it recently, actually. Feel free to read it, but there is obviously no obligation.

Mr. King, the Nuggets constant waffling has to be grating. The fact that they continue to ask for more on different occasions after parameters of a deal have been agreed upon is abhorrent. This is obvious posturing and the longer they keep Melo away from the Nets to help the Nets win games, the higher the Nets’ pick (which would become property of the Nuggets) will be in the 2011 NBA Draft. Also, if I may be frank, I hate that the team is giving up on its youth if the reported deal is true. I understand that the team isn’t performing as well as we’d all like, but they are young and we have to have faith in that Avery Johnson will help guide them.

The team has to believe before they can execute.

However, with these constant trade rumors, what is the front office really having the players believe in? To some degree, they have to be asking themselves, “Why should I commit to the Nets if they aren’t committing to me?” It’s only human. Show them faith, have them believe, and the execution will be so much better. And, props must be given to Derrick Favors. Imagine being the youngest player in the league and never really, wholly, and totally wanted by the team that drafted you… and still performing at a high level, all things considered. His attitude and seeming work ethic leads me to believe that he will be very successful in the league. Why give up on him for a player that seems to be “settling” by signing with the Nets?

Mr. King, there is no better time for you, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Prokhorov to walk away from the table and not receive a huge backlash from the fanbase. We are all reading the constant information from the internet and the Nuggets seem like the bad guy here. Most fans are already calling for the team to nix the deal. I will admit that I’ve never liked dealing for Melo at the price of Favors, and some combination of an expiring contract, Devin Harris, and multiple first-round picks. Regardless, this has gotten out of control and I admire your tenacity, but I suggest that your passion to building the Nets be towards a team and not one player (Melo) because to me, speaking frankly again, this deal is all about getting Melo at any cost, which is short-sighted.

This is your time to shine, Mr. King. Show the fanbase that the organization won’t play games and that you’re ready to commit to building the team one of the  right ways – developing your own players and through the draft. The five potential first round picks in the next two seasons are obviously huge and while the NYC area loves winners, they love underdogs just as much. But, they have to be lovable underdogs and that’s shown through their hard work and non-stop effort. The players don’t seem to be doing that and it’s probably because they don’t believe that the front office believes in them. Professionalism aside, everyone wants to be loved and respected.

Make a statement to the fans, the players, and the league, Mr. King. Walk away from this pendulous situation and move towards stability. Shape the team through the draft and build your legacy. The Nets’ legacy. I wish you nothing but luck.

Best regards,
DV

I strongly agree that the proposed trade would be terrible for the Nets. I was wondering if anyone had an address for the Nets, so that I could write them and express my support for maintaining the current roster?

Here's the address from the website (http://www.nba.com/nets/news/staff_directory.html)

390 Murray Hill Parkway
East Rutherford, NJ 07073

Good luck!

EVERY TEAM builds through the draft!!!! You then take those assets and use them to acquire 1 or 2 pieces in a trade.... Of course very few teams build solely on drafting but it's the most solid fundamental basis for building a contender.. Of course they will always be exceptions.. The Heat, The Yankees, etc...But look at the list of failures trying to build through just trades.. The Knicks, the Cowboys, the Mets and you can go on and on and on...

I'm ok trading assets for a player like Melo.... But not the boatload the nets are supposedly giving up...

And for what? An above average player (although second tier) who doesn't even want to play here.. Can anyone say Starbury Part II.....

I will agree that he doesnt want to play here.....but he is more than an above average player. I watched the game two nights ago against the Suns and he could just take over a game. Scoring, Rebounding, Stealing the ball. If he was on the Nets last night they would have never lost that game. they went at least 5 min without scoring a point in the 4th quarter. I think what has made the situation the Nets are in right now even worse is the hope we all had in the off season. All the talk about getting the # 1 pick and all the free agents. Then we get #3 and the ridiculous free agents we signed. Its is hard to sit back and watch it. I think if we werent so hopeful the inpatient people like me would be willing to wait a little while to rebuild.

Name 3 teams in the past 25 years that were built through the draft and won a championship.

YOU CANT BECAUSE IT DOESNT HAPPEN!!!!! BUT THE DELUSIONAL NETS FANS SEEM TO THINK IT DOES!!! SEE ME IN 5 YRS.....I WOULD LOVE TO SEE WHAT KIND OF SUCCESS THEY HAVE "BUILDING THROUGH THE DRAFT"

Hey MarkL, see above. I think building through the draft works. So far, the only anomaly to this is the 2004 Pistons. Even the Heat had to draft Dwyane Wade to help will them to a championship. What team do you root for by the way?

you cant even bring up any team that won a championship in the early 90s or the 80s its a totally different game. So I will admit the only team in the past 10-12 years that has won a championship building through the draft is the Spurs. Dont even bring up the Celtics or Lakers, or eventually the Heat. The Celtics two biggest pick ups were through trades. Without Allen and Garnett they dont win. Same thing with the Lakers. First run with out Shaq it doesnt happen. Second run, without Gasol and Odom it doesnt happen. Lets just put it this way. You will never see another team win a title with draft picks.

I was asked to name three teams in the last 25 years that won titles and I named six different teams with two different teams doing it in different decades. How can yo say you don't win championships with draft picks? And, if anything, you admit the Spurs did it after saying it doesn't happen. You just proved yourself wrong in that admission.

And an argument can be made that if the Heat don't draft Wade, the Heat don't win that championship. The Lakers don't draft Kobe, they don't win their recent titles, including those teams with Shaq on it, but most importantly, the recent two. Other than the 2004 Pistons, every title team had draft picks playing BIG roles.

Look at the list above, every single one of those title teams DRAFTED or made DRAFT DAY trades with their draft assets to acquire the main man/men for those titles. They are THE BUILDING BLOCK. Can a free agent/traded player push them over the top? Sure. I don't disregard that the way you disregard the importance of the draft. It's short-sighted to do so. Besides, you think those free agents would want to join a crappy team or a team that has a talented player already? It's what LeBron James and Chris Bosh did.

Also, why can't I bring up teams from the 1980s and 1990s? History proves the draft is important... going all the way back to when Mikan was drafted in the NBA's inception.

OK, if the Nets dont get Carmelo and they decide to build their team through the draft like they have done so well over the past couple years lets see where they are at in 5 years. Every team HAS to draft someone. You bringing up Wade is ridiculous. My point is you are not going to fill your team with all homegrown talent anymore. You need to go out and get players to surround your star. So until the Net draft their star they will not get the players here to compliment him. Carmelo is a star. If Favors doesnt become a star then its back to the drawing board.

You see what the league as turned into. The so called stars are running the league. Unfortunately if a small team like the Nets wants to somehow compete with the big dogs they have to somehow get one of these players to come here and bring their friends. I am not confident with the them just trying to draft guys and hope they turn into elite basketball players.

Oh, and I am a Nets fan. But unfortunately I am an impatient Nets fan who is tired of hearing the Knicks fan rip us apart.

If the Nets base their business (and basketball) model upon what Knicks fans think and say, they've already lost.

Getting Carmelo with the intention to prove an argumentative point is a fool's folly.

Bringing up Wade wasn't ridiculous... it was to fortify my argument that almost all title teams DRAFT their main guy that leads them to the title. Are you going to deny that Wade basically willed the Heat to the title? You can't.

And it's ridiculous to think a team can have a roster with ONLY players they drafted. That was never my point. However, you can build through the draft to get that Wade type of player... meaning the main cog in a title team. With a potential FIVE 1st rounders in the next two years, the Nets basically have that many shots in getting that type of player or players.

I know you made the free agent argument before with Shaq and Gasol, but without Kobe, I bet those guys don't win. Without Pierce, KG and Jesus don't win. I never made a blanket statement disregarding free agency or trades. I even bring up draft day trades. You, however, said you can't win a championship building through the draft.

And I'd be fine with the Nets actually trying to build through the draft than be held hostage by the Nuggets who have basically crapped on the Nets for several months. At some point, you have to man up and say, "Screw you, I'm out."

I understand following a model of success, but the alleged current paragon (Heat) haven't won anything yet. And, they are doing really well, but when the playoffs come, I'm sure the lack of interior D and depth will be exposed. I'd rather have seven (collectively) very good players than three (collectively) awesome players any day.

Hmm...

The Spurs won the title four times led by a trio of draft picks. Their first one was led by Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Sean Elliot. The next three had Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili.

The Lakers won five times in the past decade or so and they drafted Kobe Bryant (yes, he was traded for, but he was basically traded before the draft with the Hornets picking for the Lakers). Of course, Derek Fisher, whose been BIG for the championship teams was also drafted by the Lakers. And those two were kind of important. In the recent chips, Andrew Bynum has been an important piece as well.

The Celtics drafted Paul Pierce and made draft day trades for Rajon Rondo and Glen Davis, all of whom were important cogs in the Celtics' 17th championship. Also, they acquired Ray Allen by basically trading their fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft ON the day of the draft. That group is still doing pretty good.

Of course the Bulls won six times thanks to drafting two Hall of Famers in Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Pippen was drafted by the Sonics, but traded ON that day for Olden Polynice who was selected by the Bulls three picks later. Also in that draft, they selected Horace Grant. The Bulls' first threepeat had Jordan, Pippen, Grant, but also Bulls draftees B.J. Armstrong, Stacey King, and Will Perdue. The second threepeat was centered around Jordan and Pippen, of course, but also Bulls' draftee Toni Kukoc.

The Rockets teams had draftees Hakeem Olajuwon, Robert Horry, and Sam Cassell play pretty important roles.

The Pistons teams had some important contributions from Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, and John Salley.

The earlier Celtics teams had Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Danny Ainge, all Celtics draft picks to thank for the 1980s dynastic teams.

The earlier Lakers teams could thank Magic Johnson, James Worthy, AC Green, and Michael Cooper for the team's titles during their tenure.

I mean, draft day is important, there's no doubt about it. Is it an exact science? Of course not, but we know that smart drafting will help your chances in winning a title. OF COURSE you need to make trades and sign other players, I'm not stupid. But if you look at championship teams, their main stars are usually drafted by the respective team and having more chances to pick (like the Nets currently do) will raise your chances in drafting that player.

Anyway, I hope I answered your question. Thanks for reading.

I would like to cosign this letter. Thanks for writing it!

Too little too late.. It's already well known around the league that the posturing isn't just by the Nuggets, it's also Melo's lack of desire to sign the extension with the Nets.

Let's be honest we are a bad team and haven't shown signs of improving. 10 wins is an improvement on the awful season from last year but we are still a bottom five team. No one player is turning this mess around. I'm still laughing at the fans that believed we had a shot at the playoffs prior to the season starting.

Melo would be a step backwards on an already miserable year... The only positive from a Melo trade would be losing Petro!!!!

King has been about as bad a GM as expected but I will actually give him props for keeping a straight face while looking so bad. Clearly he must know that Melo has no interest in the Nets and he is just prodding on in these discussions because the boss is forcing him to..

When this trade finally dies and the Knicks end up with Melo we can patiently wait 3 years and then look back and laugh when a broken down Amare, a slow, old Melo and whoever else they have are clogging their bloated payroll and dragging the Knicks to last place...

Hopefully we will have been shunned by the other free agents and forced to wisely build from the draft with our boatload of draft picks... Hopefully those YOUNG, ENERGETIC players are leading us into Brooklyn and we are locking them up for years to come...

That's my wish and my open letter to Billy and the boys...

Your letter is pretty good too... let's see what happens.

did you send it to him yet? this is exactly what i've been feeling. build through the draft, tell these players that they're not gonna be moved so they can feel loved, and KEEP FAVORS. i would LOVE to see Favors alongside Lopez. A star would be nice, and would certainly take the load off Lopez's (and Harris's) shoulders and we'd probably see a great increase in his (their) performance(s). well written.

Nah... didn't send it, although I tried to get Billy's e-mail. However, everything like this has to go through Sussman and I figured, forget it... I'll just put it up on NAS and MAYBE he'll read it. However, importantly, I'm just a writer for a team blog... not sure how much weight I have, other than what's on my fat body... hahaha!

"Comrade Dennis, Mr. King is just following my orders. We know how to win in Russia, no matter how high the price ! " "And we also know how to retreat, after we get our asses kicked !"

"If Billy King can't get the job done, maybe someone else can"

"You are now dismissed"

I'm sending Rocky over to break you.

It is worth a measure of aggravation to get a scoring machine like Melo. But its not worth what they are asking for. Make them come back to the table or let the Knicks do the deal. The Nets have assets that other teams will find attractive over the summer.

Great point... it's not Melo himself, it's what the Nets give up to get Melo.

outstanding, keep up the faith and good work
