Quick Recap: Miami Heat 94, New Jersey Nets 86 (2 OT)

As if the Nets haven’t tortured us enough this season, it took them two overtimes before falling to a depleted Miami Heat 94-86 in the season finale tonight in Miami. The Nets finished the 2009-10 season 12-70.

  • The Nets were down double digits headed into the third quarter, but the bench got them back into this game, as Devin Harris and Terrence Williams sat out the fourth quarter and both overtimes and Chris Quinn ran the point. Quinn rewarded Kiki Vandeweghe with 5 points and 7 rebounds.
  • Yi Jianlian finished his season on a high note with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Courtney Lee chipped in with 17 points and 6 rebounds.
  • Brook Lopez finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds and had just about as bad as an overtime that you can have when he turned the ball over three times in the first OT. Of course, Lopez had been sitting for a bulk of the fourth quarter.
  • Josh Boone had 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 badly missed free throws off the bench.
  • The Heat, who were without Dwyane Wade, were led by Michael Beasley, who finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks before fouling out. Mario Chalmers finished with 15 points and 7 assists and was 3-9 from three.

Quick Recap: Charlotte Bobcats 105, New Jersey Nets 95

The Nets closed out the basketball-era at the Meadowlands the same way a vast majority of evenings at the Izod Center have finished this season – with a loss. The Charlotte Bobcats were able to brush off a strong third quarter by the Nets, cruising to a 105-95 victory.

  • The Nets were torched by the Bobcats in the first half, giving up 59 points on 54 percent shooting to Charlotte. But the Nets actually grabbed a quick one-point lead in the third quarter, before going ice cold from the floor, giving the Bobcats breathing room to the finish line.
  • Future trivia question: Who was the final player to score a basket at the Meadowlands? Terrence Williams. TWill’s late season run continued, as he scored 21 points on 10-19 shooting, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished 6 assists.
  • Devin Harris heated up in the third quarter en route to 22 points on 6-18 shooting. Only 1 assist for the point guard.
  • Charlotte had 7 players finish in double figures, led by Stephen Jackson with 17 points. They also had 31 assists on 43 field goals.
  • With Jarvis Hayes and Keyon Dooling hurting, and Kris Humphries leaving the game early with an injury, the Nets bench only scored 4 points, compared with 50 points for the Bobcats. That’s right, a 46-point swing.

Quick Recap: Indiana Pacers 115, New Jersey Nets 102

There were no comebacks in the Nets tonight, as an atrocious third quarter did them in, falling to the Indiana Pacers 115-102 in Indiana tonight.

  • The Nets looked good through the first quarter, leading by 9 at the end of one, but a 32-19 third quarter for the Pacers put the Nets away for good.
  • Terrence Williams, starting for Jarvis Hayes, was a few rebounds and assists shy of a back-to-back triple double, finishing with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
  • Yi Jianlian had a good game, finishing with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.
  • Brook Lopez led all Nets in scoring, finishing with 20 points and 5 rebounds.
  • The Nets did a poor job taking care of the ball tonight, finishing with 19 turnovers.
  • Troy Murphy led all scorers with 25 points and 9 rebounds.
  • The Pacers outscored the Nets 60-44 in the paint tonight. That’s ballgame right there.

Quick Recap: New Jersey Nets 127 – Chicago Bulls 116

Neither team wanted to win this one, but alas there can’t be any ties in basketball, so they kept playing…and kept playing until the Nets pulled away from the Bulls in double overtime to get the 127-116 win.

  • T-Will picked up his first career triple double going for 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists.  He actually needed that one assist from the final 3 minutes of regulation on, but he didn’t get it until the final seconds of the second OT.
  • Down 2 with only a couple seconds left, everyone thought the Nets were going to go for the three and the win.  However, Courtney Lee attacked the basket, forced rotation, and Brook Lopez ended up with a tip-in dunk at the buzzer.
  • This little stretch of league pass games makes me oh so grateful for the announcing crew we have when we watch Nets games.  The Bulls’ announcers were terrible tonight, and Stacey King (their color man) even went so far to pretend to gag as the Nets missed a few free-throws.  Really unprofessional, and in the end he ends up looking silly as the Bulls’ choked multiple times late.
  • Brook Lopez has the tip I mentioned before, and he finished with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Courtney Lee played well also.  He scored 16 points, but the biggest moment might have came where he stopped Derrick Rose on an ISO with 12 seconds left.  With no help.
  • The Nets outscored Chicago by 20 in the paint, by 10 in transition, and by 5 at the foul line.  There is your game right there.

Quick Recap: Milwaukee Bucks 108, New Jersey Nets 89

What started as a close game for the first half turned into a runaway victory for the home team, as the New Jersey Nets fell to the Milwaukee Bucks 108-89 in Milwaukee earlier tonight.

  • The Nets were a one man show offensively for most of the game, with Devin Harris leading the way early, and finishing with 25 points and 4 assists on 9-15 shooting, including 3-4 from three.
  • Courtney Lee chipped in with 19 points and 6 rebounds on 8-15 shooting, including 3-5 from three.
  • The rest of the Nets were ice cold, and the team was 39 percent from the field. Terrence Williams started off April with a thud, with 6 points and 4 rebounds on 2-13 shooting. Brook Lopez was 1-5 and finished with 6 points and 5 turnovers, but on a positive note, he did collect 7 assists.
  • The Bucks shot 52 percent from the field and were led by John Salmons with 22 points on 10-13 shooting. Jerry Stackhouse must have woken up in the 1990s, chipping in with 18 points off the bench.

Quick Recap: New Jersey Nets 99, Washington Wizards 109

I didn’t think the Nets were going to show any signs of fatigue tonight, with the bench logging a good amount of minutes, however that wasn’t the case.  If the Nets performance last night defensively was the best we have seen, tonight could have been the worst as the Nets lost to the Wizards 109-99.

  • I know a lot of you didn’t see that game, and that was probably a good thing.  The defensive rotations were off the entire night.  So much so, that Blatche (the man the Nets doubled) picked up 8 assists in the first quarter.  The Wizards were allowed to crack the 100 point mark for the first time in 20 games.
  • Devin Harris put up a quiet 22, but he struggled on the offensive end.  The only player that looked like he was clicking was Brook Lopez who also put in 22 on 12 shots.
  • There are some teams that just present match-up problems for other teams (think Nets vs. Bobcats).  With how the Wizards are currently constructed, they aren’t much better talent wise, but they just are a tough match-up for the Nets.  Especially Blatche who was running around the court like a chicken with his head cut off trying to get a triple double.
  • Terrence Williams had another solid game but had a key turnover when he tried to throw a full court bounce pass down 5 late.  Rookie mistake that happens, just poor timing of it.

Quick Recap: New Jersey Nets 115, New Orleans Hornets 87

In what was easily the best game of the year, the Nets win this one 115 to 87.  As expected, the Hornets were sluggish right from the start, as the Nets jumped to a 12 point lead at the break.  The Nets had a pretty rough 3rd quarter, as the Hornets cut the lead to 7, however a quick 6-0 extended the Nets lead to 13 and effectively broke the Hornets back.

  • Like I was hoping they would, the Nets ran the ball tonight, getting 40 points in transition compared to the Hornets 11.
  • Terrence Williams was obviously the player of the game tonight with 14 points and 14 assists in 30 minutes.
  • Depth has been an issue for the Nets all year, but tonight all 11 of the Nets on the active roster got in the scoring column.  8 got into double figures with CDR leading the way with 17 points.
  • After setting their season high in assists against the Spurs, the Nets broke it again, dishing out 34 assists on 46 baskets.
  • With the Hornets making a run in the third quarter, Devin Harris had a huge chasedown block, swinging the momentum back in their favor.
  • The Nets as a team had 10 blocks, with Kris Humphries getting 5 of those.

Quick Recap: Phoenix Suns 116, New Jersey Nets 105

The Nets three game home winning-streak came to an end tonight, as they fell to the Phoenix Suns 116-105 at the Izod Center.

  • The Nets may be playing better as of late, but even they could stop the Suns, who shot 57 percent from the field and 61 percent (11-18) from three. The key was the third quarter, where the Suns outscored the Nets 38-23 to take total control of the game. Steve Nash led the way with 24 points, 14 assists and 7 rebounds. Jason Richardson added 23 points on 10-17 shooting. The Suns also outrebounded the Nets 45-34.
  • The Nets did get a strong showing from their bench. Terrence Williams ended his strong March on a high note, scoring 21 points (9-20 shooting), along with 9 assists and 5 rebounds. Kris Humphries had his best game in weeks, scoring 17 points on 7-11 shooting, grabbing 7 rebounds and blocking 2 shots.
  • Tough day at the office offensively for Devin Harris, who finished with 9 points on 2-10 shooting. He was seen during the third quarter wearing a big wrap around his back, though he did play in the fourth quarter. Harris also had 9 assists.
  • Solid nights for Brook Lopez, 19 points and 8 rebounds, and Courtney Lee, 17 points, 5 rebounds.

Quick Recap: New Jersey Nets 90, San Antonio Spurs 84

The Nets have officially avoided the dreaded “Worst of All Time” tag, grabbing their 10th win tonight by beating the Manu Ginoboli and Tony Parker-less San Antonio Spurs 90-84, at the Izod Center.

  • Before we look at individual performances, let’s consider why the Nets really won this game: They played great defense on the Spurs holding them to 42 percent shooting and 38 second-half points, they hit timely shots, including jumpers from Brook Lopez and Terrence Williams in the closing two minutes, and they took care of the ball in an unprecedented way, only committing 4 turnovers, including 0 in the second half.
  • Brook Lopez overcame a rough first half to score 22 points on 7-14 shooting, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing 3 dimes. He was even urged by TWill to take a technical free throw down the stretch, making the shot.
  • Courtney Lee finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and perhaps the defensive play of the game when he sealed off George Hill with about 10 seconds left in the game, leading to a SAS turnover, icing the game for the Nets.
  • Good day at the office for Devin Harris, finishing with 17 points and 9 assists.
  • Tim Duncan was limited to 30 minuted, but was up and down when he was on the floor, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds on  6-15 shooting. George Hill led the Spurs with 19 points.
  • Terrence Williams turned it on in the second half with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
  • Rough game for Yi Jianlian with 8 points on 3-12 shooting, and apparently, an injured shoulder.

Quick Recap: New Jersey Nets 83, Chicago Bulls 106

The Nets had their winning streak (still feels funny to say) snapped tonight against the Chicago Bulls with a 106-83 loss.  The Bulls jumped on the Nets early, taking a 16 points halftime lead and not looking back.

  • No Net was really able to get into a flow, but Yi showed glimpses early.  However, he picked up his 2nd foul after 3 minutes, and never really got back into the game.
  • Brook Lopez struggled with a 2-11 night for 7 points.
  • The “other guys” were able to beat up on the Nets as Taj Gibson put up a career high 22 points (16 in the first half), and Jannero Pargo scored 27.
  • The Nets cut the lead to 7 in the third quarter as Jarvis Hayes went on a personal 9-0 run, but that was the closest they got as the Bulls pulled away and beat the Nets by 10 in the third.
  • The Nets actually shot pretty well from 3 (10-22), but they allowed the Bulls to outshoot them going 7-13 (better than 50%).
