Scouting Report Wrap

For those who lost track, today’s Brook Lopez report marks the end of our preseason scouting report endeavor. We had some fun with it and we hope you all did as well. Stay tuned next week as NAS compares the Nets to the rest of the eastern conference.

In case you missed anyone’s scouting report. Here’s a refresher:

Brook Lopez, Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian, Jarvis Hayes, Terrence Williams, Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston, Keyon Dooling, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Tony Battie, Josh Boone, Bobby Simmons, Sean Williams, Trenton Hassell, Eduardo Najera.

Scouting Report: Brook Lopez

Name: Brook Lopez
Position: C
Height: 7′0″
Weight: 260 lbs.
Birth Date: April 1, 1988 (age 21)
Birth Place: North Hollywood, California
Number: 11
Drafted: 10th pick of the first round in 2008 by the New Jersey Nets
Experience: 1 year
Contract: 2.25 Million

On offense:

Brook is one of the few young back-to-the basket centers left in the NBA.  After an effective rookie season, one in which he finished 3rd in ROY voting, Brook is looking to come back even stronger this year.  Lopez showed a nice back to the basket game, and he also showed a nice touch on his shot:

Scouting Report: Devin Harris

Name: Devin Harris
Position: PG
Height: 6′3″
Weight: 185 lbs.
Birth Date: February 27, 1983 (age 26)
Birth Place: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Number: 34
Drafted: 5th pick of the first round in 2004 by the Dallas Mavericks
Experience: 5 years
Contract: 8.4 Million

On offense:

Devin Harris, without a doubt, is the fastest player in the NBA with the basketball, and with the Nets hoping to run a lot more this year, that may make Devin even more productive.  I mean in last week’s preseason game, Devin was catching the ball at half court on the inbounds from made baskets.  This makes it very easy for Devin to use his speed to his advantage.  Devin uses his speed to break down defenders on the top of the key and get into the lane.  This was part of the reason the Nets were so good from the corner 3 spot last year. Devin would get into the lane, causing either Bobby Simmons or Jarvis Hayes’ man to sink to help.

Scouting Report: Yi Jianlian

yi-photo

Name: Yi Jianlian
Position: PF
Height: 7’0”
Weight: 238
Birth Date: October 27, 1987 (21 years-old)
Birth Place: He Shan, China
Number: 9
Drafted: 2007, 1st round, 6th overall by Milwaukee
Experience: Two seasons
Contract: $3.19 million in 2009-10

On offense:

Yi Jianlian may be the Nets most popular and marketable player, though that has a large part to do with the fact that he is one of a small handful of NBA players who hail from China – the most populous country in the world. The most common word associated with Yi is “potential.” After two some up, mostly down seasons in the NBA, that’s really the only positive word about Yi you can say because his numbers are plain ugly in most cases.

Scouting Report: Jarvis Hayes

alg_hayes-drives

Name: Jarvis Hayes
Position: SF
Height: 6?7?
Weight: 220
Birth Date: August 9, 1981 (28 years-old)
Birth Place: Atlanta, GA
Number: 22
College: University of Georgia
Drafted: 2003, 1st round, 10th overall by Washington
Experience: 6 seasons
Contract: $2.06 million in 2009-10

On offense:

Injuries and a lack of frontcourt depth thrusted Jarvis Hayes into a bigger role with the Nets than many were probably expecting last season, and it looks like that trend could continue headed into the first part of this coming season, as there are indications that Hayes could be the starting small forward, keeping the seat warm for Terrence Williams. It’s not that Hayes wasn’t a solid player for the Nets last season, it’s just that there’s nothing in his career numbers that indicates he should be a starter.

Hayes is primarily a jump shooter, and a somewhat efficient one at that. He had career highs in field goal (.445) and three-point percentage (.385) last year. About 83 percent of all of his shots last season were jumpers, good for an effective Field goal percentage of .502. He wasn’t shy about shooting the three-ball either. More than 40 percent of Hayes’ total field goal attempts (577) were threes (244). Hayes had a True Shooting percentage, which accounts for free throws and three-pointers, of 53.7, also a career high. With age, Hayes appears to becoming a more effective shooter, as his TS percentage has increased every year since his rookie season. Last season, his TS was higher than such notable SFs as Carmelo Anthony, Josh Howard, Peja Stojakovich and Rudy Gay.

hayes

During the season, Hayes seemed to compliment the rest of the Nets starting rotation. According to 82games, a rotation of Harris-Carter-Hayes-Yi-Lopez, basically the starting five with Hayes at SF, had a winning percentage of 62.5 percent and a +/- of +23.

Scouting Report: Terrence Williams

Name: Terrence Williams
Position: PG/SG/SF
Height: 6′6″
Weight: 220
Birth Date: June 28, 1987 (age 22)
Birth Place: Seattle, Washington
Number: 8
College: Louisville
Drafted: 2009, 1st round, 11th overall by New Jersey
Experience: Rookie
Contract: $2.06 million in 2009-10

On offense:

Terrence Williams seems to be the perfect addition to a team that is going to try to be an up and down team this year.  At 6′5″ Terrence Williams can do just about everything on the offensive end.  The one thing he can’t do however is kind of important.  Right now Terrence is lacking a shot, and if he can develop that he will turn into a scary good player.

Scouting Report: Courtney Lee

Name: Courtney Lee
Position: SG
Height: 6′5″
Weight: 200
Birth Date: October 3, 1985 (age 23)
Birth Place: Indianapolis, Indiana
Number: 6
College: Western Kentucky
Drafted: 2008, 1st round, 22nd overall by Orlando
Experience: 1 season
Contract: $1.26 million in 2009-10

On offense:

Fair or not, all eyes are going to be on Courtney Lee going into this year because he is the man who is basically replacing Vince Carter.  If Courtney Lee is going to get Nets fans to forget about Vince Carter, he is going to need to improve on his solid rookie season (and his terrific playoff performance).  To Nets fans, on offense Courtney Lee is going to need to match Vince Carter’s production.  Is that even possible?

Scouting Report: Rafer Alston

Name: Rafer Alston
Position: PG
Height: 6′2″
Weight: 175
Birth Date: July 24, 1976 (age 33)
Birth Place: Queens, New York
Number: 1
College: Fresno State
Drafted: 1998, 2nd round, 39th overall by Milwaukee
Experience: 9 season
Contract: $5.25 million in 2009-10

On offense:

It has been said a couple of times on this site already, but Rafter Alston is the first true backup PG the Nets have had in a very long time.  Rafer was the starting PG for the Orlando Magic the second half of the year, and he lead them to the finals with his solid play in the playoffs.

Scouting Report: Keyon Dooling

act_keyon_dooling1

Name: Keyon Dooling
Position: PG/SG
Height: 6′3″
Weight: 196
Birth Date: May 8, 1980 (age 29)
Birth Place: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Number: 55
College: University of Missouri
Drafted: 2000, 1st round, 10th overall by Orlando
Experience: 9 season
Contract: $3.56 million in 2009-10

On offense:

Dooling proved that his solid 2007-08 season was no fluke by posting a career high in points (9.7) off the bench backing up Devin Harris and Vince Carter. After his 07-08 campaign in Orlando where he posted a career high in True Shooting (TS) percentage of 57.2, more than a 7 percent rise from the year before, ESPN’s John Hollinger cited such a leak in TS as a “red flag.” However, Dooling posted a 56.2 TS last season, good for 20th among all shooting guards who played at least 500 minutes last year. So the red flags should probably be lowered.

Scouting Report: Chris Douglas-Roberts

amd_douglas-roberts

Name: Chris Douglas-Roberts
Position: G/F
Height: 6′7″
Weight: 200
Birth Date: January 8, 1987 (age 22
Birth Place: Detroit, MI
Number: 17
College: University of Memphis
Drafted: 2008, 2nd round, 40th overall by New Jersey
Experience: 1 season
Contract: $736k in 2009-10

On offense:

Chris Douglas-Roberts came into the NBA out of the University of Memphis with the reputation as a scorer. The problem was, until the latter part of the season when the Nets were already out of playoff contention, Douglas-Roberts wasn’t given many opportunities to show off his scoring ability on the court, and instead was probably best-known for the very public verbal berating he took from assistant coach Doug Overton in front of the media during a practice in January.
